So I go out and look at new washer and dryer sets. It's been 16 yrs since I bought the last set and wow at all the bells and whistles they have now. I do not want a front loader (not enough space) so I'm looking at top loaders. I think I found one by Maytag.

I have never bought a Maytag before. How durable is this brand? Has anyone had any problems with their Maytag washer/dryer?

Thanks in advance.... :sunny:

OMG my washer died yesterday and I have started to look too!!!
Maytags are soppossed to be great, but i have only begun to search....although it needs to be a short search, because I do laundry everyday! Keep in touch and let me know what you discover!!!

My fiance - who, as Ive said before - does appliance repair, always recomends Whirlpool's....(also sold under name Kenmore)

According to him:

Theyre cheaper to fix (parts are more available, as well as cost less)
Theyre easier to fix (hence cheaper, again)
Everyone knows how to fix them (Maytag's you need to take a "special" course to be able to fix many of their models - especially new ones)
And Maytags parts - many of them - are "combined" - like if something breaks, a cheap easy thing...it's connected to some other part, which isnt cheap and easy and you have to replace the whole thing.

Jimmy likes Whirlpools. Doesnt think Maytag's are any less reliable, but for reasons stated above.

And when Jimmy talks, people listen. :listen:

Would Jimmy want to come look at my washer??? JK!!!
So stay away form Maytag and look for Whirlpool??

I agree, Whirlpool (Kenmore at Sears) have been good to me. I go with the Sears, they will match any offers if you ask them to and say so-and-so offered XX (free delivery, 0% finance, stuff like that).

We have the GE Profile Harmony. Thats the washer and dryer that talk to each other, meaning that when the washer is done, it sends a signal to the dryer on how long to dry that load and what temperature.

The washer basket is HUGE and allows me to wash an extra large load with no problems. According to GE, it's Harmony dryer is the fastest dryer you can buy.

That'd be QUITE a service call --- if you pay for mileage, why not?!?? :teeth:

He doesnt think Maytag's are bad - he just doesnt think theyre AS good. :confused3

I remember being somewhere, and he saw the Maytag advertisement, with these pictures of *why* their machine was better then the competitor. For instance this THICK, HEAVY spring, as opposed to the "other" machine's normal sized one.

Jim started laughing - he goes "Those dont break! - it dont matter how thick their's is...the other ones never ever break, ever!"

Then he was quite disgusted with the comparison of the motors as well, as the Maytag has a "bunch of crap" you have to take off, just to get to anything.

I stood there, acted fascinated and *quite* interested. :3dglasses

I haven't had one break so I can't comment on parts but I love Maytag appliances. All of ours are wonderful and I think they last more then other brands. You will find good and bad in all.

I have had a Maytag washer and dryer since 1994 and both are going strong and never needed a repair. LOVE them!!

Must be the week for washers to break down...my washer broke this week too!! Although I was able to get it fixed for not too much money, I was still without a washer for 3 days and now the laundry is piled up with no end in sight!!

We have a Kenmore that we bought 10 years ago...this is the second time we have had to have someone come to repair it. The first time was because a child size sock was stuck somewhere so the water could not drain out ~ due to *somebody* overloading the machine  and the second time the motor coupling went and it stopped spinning. Not too bad considering it is 10 years old and the first time it broke was my fault....

We had an old Maytag that was in the house when we purchased it 15 years ago (we just replaced it about 3 years ago) and I don't know how long it had been in here before we bought the house. That thing would NOT die!! I actually wanted the thing to break down because the capacity was not that large, and I really wanted one of the new ex-large washers.

However, I have not heard many good things about Maytags lately. I do a lot of research before I buy anything and it just seems like Maytags aren't what they used to be. We ended up purchasing a Kenmore (Whirlpool). It's been fine so far.

Do yourself a HUGE favor and buy a Fisher-Paykel. I've had mine for three years and I adore it. It actually spins the clothes at some high level rpm's (I can't remember what they told me, but it was HIGH) and doesn't have most of the parts a normal washer has that are prone to breakage. When I pull my clothes out of the washer, they are almost completely dry. I only dry them for a few minutes. It is really unbelievable. It is a foreign company (New Zealand???), but they sell them now at Home Depot. When we go back home to our parents houses, I dread washing our clothes there--Kenmore and Maytag, I believe, because it takes so dang long to do!

Count me in with a broken washer also. I have a 3 year old Whirlpool Calypso. The repairGIRL came yesterday and had to order a part and then I get to wait 2 weeks to get it repaired. And I get to spend $270. We did alot of research but I guess any brand can break down.

I am so overwhelmed with all the choices. I will be going to Sears in the morning to look there. Thanks CathrynRose aka Jimmy.... ;) Thats the advice I needed also for future repairs.

Keep the comments coming and I'm glad I'm not the only one with a broken washing machine.

Ours broke Monday - fortunately, we were already planning on replacing it, but had planned on moving our old one and dryer down to the beach house. We ended up with a front loading LG one, partially because we had tons of Home Depot certificates to cover its cost that we had gotten with cashed in Amex points. The new set isnt being delivered until Monday, so I cant say how I like it yet.

Believe it or not, but, my washer broke Saturday. Tomorrow I'm off to the laundromat for them to do our wash. My new washer comes on the 29th.

I have a Kenmore that is about 10 years old ( I am afraid to look to see if it still works :rotfl2:) that I love. The basket is huge and it has the setting I need. It has had a minor repair, some valve gasket thing a magig or something or other. It was a $50 repair.

I bought a set from Sears. Sears is having a great sale so I could not go wrong. Again, I didn't look at front loaders..they are nice but I can't use them.

Here is what I bought

Sears item #02616942000 washer
Sears item #02666942000 dryer

I will not have the set until Monday....woe me at the piles of clothes I need to wash.

I had a Maytag that finally started leaking oil when it was 40 years old. Two other people had owned it before us.

So I bought another one.
