My thoughts DLH versus GCH

We just got back from a one week stay at the DLH. It was very enjoyable. We had a two bedroom suite in the Fantasy tower with a pool view. When I made the reservation, I was agonizing over choosing between the DLH and the GC. Typically we are "premium" people and choose the nicest lodgings, but I read so many reviews that had the DLH better for small kids (which we have) that I couldn't really see the reason to spend the additional $1000 the GC would have cost for the week.

When we arrived, I was a little underwhelmed by the DLH. The bell service at arrival was excellent but the check in lady was "formal" at best and cold at worst. The lobby was pretty disappointing. The only "Disney" touch I initially noticed was the tea cup chairs and they weren't anything to get too excited about. We have only been to WDW prior to this and the on site hotels we've stayed at there were just so much better themed that I initially found the lobby and grounds of the DLH pretty disappointing. Later that day we went into the GC for a coffee and at that point I was thinking I had made a major mistake. It looked so much more like a WDW resort with over the top theming that I was feeling bad about our choice.

HOWEVER, as time went on, my feelings for the DLH changed. My kids started discovering "hidden mickeys" EVERYWHERE. It became a really exciting game for them to try to find as many as they could around the hotel and they all LOVED this. I don't know if the GC has a lot of hidden mickeys but there are lots at the DLH (several in the lobby I missed in the beginning and several very subtle ones in the room) and my kids' excitement at finding them all over the hotel definitely changed my attitude toward it. Also, the pool area was awesome. The "regular" pool failed to hold my kids' attention for more than five minutes, they can and do have this type of pool readily available to them at home. They all loved the water slide pool and even my most timid kid went on the biggest slide. Even when not riding the slides they enjoyed playing in the spray features. I looked at the pool over at the GC and although it was pretty, there is no doubt my kids wouldn't have enjoyed it as much as the DLH pool. Also, we saw Goofy walking around the pool one day and that made their day.

I can't compare the rooms as I never saw inside one at the GC, but I would only call the DLH room "fine". It was clean and comfortable and spacious (given we had the suite) but not luxurious. The shower was truly awful. The beds were comfortable and the bedding was fine. The service was good, our bags arrived very promptly as did our requested roll away on the first day. The only bad thing that happened was that my DD's lovey disappeared, she sleeps with it so I think it was mixed up in the sheets of her bed and must have been tossed in with the sheets when they changed them. We called housekeeping and lost and found but it was never found. Thankfully we have plenty of "spares" at home.

I could have written the same report as you -- we are normally "premium" hotel people, but have stayed at DLH a couple of times because of the pool for DS6. He prefers DLH to GCH...and I still much prefer GCH. When you use the word "fine" to describe several things at DLH (bedding, room, etc.), I completely agree. Nothing is great (except the pool), but everything is fine.

Until my son gets too old for the water slides, I think we'll be staying at GCH when it's not swimming weather and DLH when it is warm!

Great review! My kids found a few hidden Mickeys, but I didn't encourage them as I was pretty dismayed by our experience and don't plan to ever stay at DLH again unless it's literally free. We haven't stayed at GCH yet but if we return on-site, that's where I want to be. DLH's slides were the only saving grace of our recent 3 night experience. Our beds weren't even just fine--they were downright uncomfortable and my neck is still aching. We also had a downright dismal experience at our rented pool cabana. So at least now I know what we've been missing on past trips--poor service and several bad nights' of uncomfortable sleeping. I am tempted to book our next trip at GCH but then I'm worried it, too, will be disappointing...

I am glad you enjoyed it and am glad to hear the review.

Regarding Goofy ... every time we've stayed at DLH, we would see him multiple times a day! He was there when we checked in (and put on an excellent "show" for the guests in the lobby, playing with their luggage), then was back again in the lobby every day around the same time. We also saw him inside and outside at various other times of day. Honestly, we assumed he was the building's "mascot" at that it was the norm!

Wow, you're so lucky! We never saw Goofy during our 4 day/3 night stay about 2 weeks ago other than the 1 posed photo my girls got when we went to the character meal. We never saw any characters in the DLH lobby. Even at the character meal, my girls only saw 2 characters (Minnie and Snow White) as Dale and Jasmine skipped over our table (once when Minnie was there and once when my girls went to get dessert). I kept wondering why we didn't see Goofy or other characters in the lobby, as I thought someone here said they saw a bunch of characters just hanging around the hotel.

Here's the funny thing for me. My kids are now older (14 and 11), and prefer GCH. They used to LOVE DLH and that was by far their favorite. That was before it was renovated.

This last Christmas, we decided to stay at DLH and take advantage of the newly added slides and the fun changes. I'd stayed since the reno but my kids had not. My kids liked it but they didn't love it. I have to admit that I so much prefer the old lobby, grounds, and pool. I don't care about the monorail water slides, but understand their draw. I miss the waterfalls, pirate ship, and shops over the lagoon. I really miss all of the Disney touches that were removed--it was so fun to arrive and see the statues, great lobby etc. I'm not a big fan of the space-age modern design. I still love seeing the characters walking around and our bedding has always been super comfortable (that's about a dozen stays or more).

That said, DLH does grow on you and I do love Trader Sam's and Tangaroa Terrace. The outdoor fireplace area is nice.

I have come to prefer GCH over DLH, but to be honest, neither hotel is going to compare to resort hotels in places like Hawaii or Orlando. You just have to understand that going in. OTOH, they are miles above the motels across the street IMO.

We love both! We've stayed Concierge level at both and I find them equally nice.

I think it is more lively and spirited at Disneyland Hotel. I see characters in the driveway as cars pull up, in the lobby, at the pool, etc. It's so fun to see the kids get so excited.

GH has more of a romantic, adult feel to it. Very pretty, sedate, lush.
