My son is one of those picky kids who has issues every morning with his socks and how they fit -- they're either too loose or too tight and it takes up to 30 minutes to get his socks and shoes on exactly right.

I've heard that this is an issue with other kids and was wondering if anyone on DIS has the same issue and if anyone has found socks that worked for them. My hope is that if enough people say the same brand, I might try it for my son or he'll be wearing flip flops year round! ;)

My 5 yo still has issues w/this although it was really bad when she was around 3. Sorry to say, but not much really helped. I bought some thicker socks from the GAP which seemed to work the best. Also I've heard from others that turning the socks inside out could help. Good luck.

My oldest DS has SID so sock issues are not new to us. The thinner the sock - the better for him. Thicker, bulkier socks bunch up when you put their shoes on and they also "bag" around the toes.

I get the Old Navy turn cuff socks for him.

DS was also a 'sock kid'. And tags on clothes. The tags issues seem to have gone away.

For the past 3 years, the ONLY socks he has worn are Old Navy Kids Cushioned Sports Socks:

They are snug fitting, but not tight, if that makes any sense. They're pretty stretchy. And the toe seam, although it's there, lies fairly flat.

Good Luck!!!!!

Holy cow! I thought my son had fallen from another planet when he started this stuff. I finally found ones that he likes, I think they are made by hanes, and they don't have the line at the toe.

My son also is very sock picky, but I also have sock issues, so it's no surprise. I very often turn my own socks inside out since they tend to be more comfortable that way (the part near my toe is towards my shoe, so not poking my toe). My son has one brand that he likes a lot--I think Adidas. They aren't the thinner socks, which is kind of surprising. He used to wear Old Navy socks when he was younger. Also, make sure the socks aren't too big so there's extra material. Since he doesn't like them too tight, maybe ones with more elastic would work better for him. I think the ones I wear are Adidas (now I'm questioning if that's the brand my son wears...). I know I got them all at Kohl's. When you look at them, stick your hand down into the sock and make sure there's not too much material at the toe, assuming that's what's bothering him (that's what bothers my son and me and used to bother my DD).

Yep, I have sock issues.

I have sock issues, too! I hate the kind that you can feel the ridges on the bottom of your feet.

My dd has issues with ALL of her clothes. I swear I want to start my OWN clothing line just to outfit my kid.

My son has sensory issues, and socks are a sure fire trigger. I haven't found a pair that he likes, but he prefers thin socks to the cushiony kind. Anytime I find think socks in the store I buy them up.

I will say this gets better as he gets older.

Wow I cant believe this thread, I am just wondering if there are any teens who have the sock issue thing. My ds is 14 and has always had the sock issue. Its not even just the toes, its the ankle too. I just get the hanes ankle socks. I know this might be a strange question, but do any of your kids have ocd associated with this because my gf dd has it and has sock issues and other stuff too. Sometimes the other ds just yells at him and says, look, its just socks, hurry we will be late for the bus etc., but there is the folding at the ankle, pulling at the toes etc. I unfortunately dont think he will grow out of this.

Nope, no OCD, but I expect it is a "sensory disorder". I think it is called "sensory integration dysfunction".

Sock thing I can handle...however the underware thing is about to drive us to drink.:lmao:

I once took a Temperament class for my home day-care and believe it or not (I'm guessing you all will) this is actually very common. It's been a few years since that class, but basically some kids depending on their temperament have sock issues. It's not something they are doing on purpose, it is just something that certain kids have issues with. You are doing the right thing by trying to find other socks and hopefully in time they will outgrow this.

My youngest DD went through this as well, along with not wanting buttoned pants around her waist, they had to be elastic. At 12 years old she still won't wear tight jeans (woohoo, not gonna complain about that :teeth: ) but at least she wears jeans now... but the sock issue goes on. I am seriously considering men's socks for my next purchase, they don't seem to have the stretchy tight feeling that women's do, and they come in bigger sizes.

Yup, this is what my son was diagnosed with too, SID. He's more than just "picky", he really is disoriented by the "feel" of certain clothing. He's oversensitive to smells as well.

I'd suggest the OP read "The Out of Sync Child". It may or may not apply to her child. When I read it I felt like I finally understood what was going on for my son, it was such a relief!

Thanks for everyone's suggestions and advice!

I'll try Old Navy tonight and see if we have any luck.

To the posters who mentioned Sensory Sensitivity, my son was also one of those babies/toddlers who hated walking barefoot on beaches and grass because of the feeling, so I shouldn't be too surprised about the socks! He doesn't have issues with other clothes. I'll check out the Out of Sync book.

Thanks again!

When you had him diagnosed did they do anything special? Were you able to get him some help or exercises to help to him?

He had an ADOS test, which is the test they give to children to rule out or diagnose children with autism. In Drew's case, he did not exhibit a lot of the social issues kids with autism have, but he did have so many of the sensory issues. Through this test they were able to rule out high functional autism but diagnose him with SID. The test itself is pretty extensive, it lasts about 3 or 4 hours.

We work with an occupational therapist now. We just started, had our first session a couple of weeks ago. She conducted the session as if they were playing, and it was a lot of fun for him. Hopefully it will pay off the more he goes. As I said, it seems to have lessened now that he is a little older (almost 8)....when he was a toddler and really couldn't articulate what was wrong, I felt so bad! I think he is as relieved as I am that we finally have some answers.
