My sister is dead - UPDATE regarding THIS thread page 15..

C. Ann,

My heart goes out to you and your family during this difficult time.

If the BIL is phoning your family, you may be able to have his call traced by the telephone company as soon as you hang up. In the front of your phone book it should tell you what numbers to press to trace a call. This will give the police a report that they can request if/ when they investigate.

I agree about hiring the private investigator. If you and your family can swing it financially, that is the way I would go.

C. Ann, I will keep you and your family in my prayers. I hope you can get some resolution and peace on this soon.

Wouldn't there be an automatic autopsy performed in this type of situation. That report may also shed some light on the situation.

What a mess. I am sorry this bombshell was dropped on you and I hope you find answers soon. Take care of yourself.

At this point, I can't even locate any record of a death certificate!

Someone is buried in that grave - and I assume it's her - so why isn't there a death certificate somewhere?

------------------------

Wish this news hadn't come during a holiday period when everything is closed.. This weekend seems about a hundred years long.....

I have no advice to offer as I (thankfully) have never dealt with anything remotely close to this. All I can do is wish you luck on your search for answers and let you know that I will be praying for you & your family.:grouphug:

I don't know how they do things in Michigan but here in Connecticut the cemetary must be provided with the death certificate before they will allow the burial.

I agree with Bobcat. I woke up thinking about this last night . . . why did it take the ex 2 years to tell you about your sister's death? What else is he hiding from you? If he actually divorced your sister prior to her death then why did he contact you now? I understand (from experience) the VA pays for burial service. Since there is a next of kin (your niece) any litigation against the railroad would go to the person filing the claim on behalf of your niece - which most likely is him. Definitely speak with your local law enforcement. They may be able to point you in the right direction and do some preliminary work for you prior to you and your family having to hire a private investigator. I wish you the best in your search for the truth. I am still so concerned though that he waited so long to tell you. There is something wrong here! Annmarie

Just discovered the telephone number goes back to a Sprint mail box - not a home phone..

Guess that's his "insurance" so we can't speak to my niece - who might accidentally divulge something she shouldn't..

Found another name, address, and phone# last night - will check that one out..

General info request: Is Troy, MI within the vicinity of Battle Creek? Can't find my road atlas right now..

Mapquest shows that Troy is a suburb of Detroit... a couple of hours away from Battle Creek.

Wow, this sounds so bizarre, and awful. I keep checking back to see if you've found out anything else.

So sorry for your loss!:(

The only other thing that I could think of to do, is to maybe check the local women's shelter. If she was a victim of domestic abuse maybe she fled at one time, and stayed in a shelter? Maybe if you tell them your story, they would help you. That type of agency may be more sympathetic than some of the others.

Good luck, and keep us posted!:sunny:

I hope soon you will find all the answers to this terrible situation.

C.Ann...I am very sorry for your loss and the way you have found out the information so far.

You say you can't find a death certificate.....how are you looking? I have tried to do geneology research on the web and have found alot of websites useless. They will try to search for vital records but come back with no matches found. And I know thats not true, my grandparents were born somewhere or I wouldn't be here. Probably the best thing to do is either fill out a form to order a copy of the death certificate right from the county clerk or call on Monday morning and see if they can help you. I think for extra $$$ you can have them speed up the process of getting the vital record to you. I know I have the site bookmarked somewhere if you need it (to order from). Hope this helps in your search for answers.

Just wanted to offer you a hug C. Ann! Don't know what else to say.

O.K., here is the vital records website for Michigan. You can also order divorce records here, which might help in your search for information. http://vitalchek.com/provider_overview.asp?provider_id=9172

I've been using the actual county web sites - and there's no record of a death certficate in the ones that have on-line data bases..

Strange.. Hopefully I can get more answers tomorrow..

C.Ann you and your family are in my thoughts.
