My Pyrex 9 x 13 pan Just Exploded In the Oven??

Well this just settles it. If I can't be safe using Pyrex then I must quit cooking altogether. ;)
I like the way you think :teeth:

I'm an insurance agent and one of my clients had a Pyrex dish explode in her kitchen. It was so hot that the little slivers of glass melted into her laminate countertop, marred her cabinets and her linoleum floor. Good news--it was covered. Bad news, she had little slivers of glass and burns in her forearms.

After that, I threw mine all away and won't touch the stuff.

I had one explode on me when taking it out of the oven also. It was scary the glass just went all over the kitchen and the explosion caused the glass door on my oven to break. Fortunately I stepped back quickly and didn't get hurt. Still the next day I went back to using a pyrex pan, hasn't happened again.

I too exploded a pyrex pan by turning on a burner under it by mistake. There was glass all over the house from it, but I wasn't hurt at all. The big chunks did burn through my linoleum floor and my countertop though...nice big scorch marks. Not Fun!!!

Have you ever had anything pyrex expode?? What a mess!! No dinner here tonight unless Dh stops for pizza.
Yes, Dh was cooking chicken wings in our's one day. He took it out of the oven with the wings in it and dumped frozen french fries in (I guess he was combining to save dishes :confused3 ). Right then and there, the dish exploded as soon as the frozen fries hit it!

Years ago, I had a Corningware glass lid break when I put it into the dishwater while it (the lid) was still too hot. Maybe someone here on the Dis knows the physics of hot glass touching cooler things and can explain it to us. I dont know what makes it happen. I only know that it will! :teeth:

Oh, BTW, Dh brushed the broken glass pieces off the chicken wings and ate them anyway!

I have had this Pyrex glass cake pan 9 x 13 for years and tonight I was baking Chicken in it. I added a little water to the drippings, Closed the Oven, got 3 steps away when it sounded like a bomb went off in the Oven!!! The pan shattered!! It is ALL over the oven!! I'm so glad none of my family was hurt!!

I had this exact thing happen to me years ago. I was baking chicken and added water and it shattered before I even got the oven door closed. It really scared me and I had never had anything like that happen before. I am glad no one in your kitchen got hurt!

My husband just read the reports that many plastic containers are dangerous and could cause cancer, etc... He has always carried leftovers to work in plastic containers for his lunch. Now he asked me to get glass containers, so yesterday I bought a bunch of pyrex.... This thread is making me not want to use pyrex anymore!

I once had a pyrex baking dish explode on thanksgiving day - I had just taken it out of the oven, all it had in it was a little "juice" from a removed turkey, I put it on top of the stove (which was turned off) and it went off like a bomb - there were little crumbles of glass from one end of the kitchen to the other.

This same thing happened to me on Thanksgiving Day. 15 minutes before the guests were to arrive my pyrex bowl of mashed potatoes exploded all over the kitchen. We were so lucky no one got hurt. Boy, was that a stressful 15 minutes yet a Thanksgiving we will always remember. :)

We also had one of hte 9x13 pans shatter, which caused a grease fire in the oven. On the bright side, the house was a rental and we got a new oven out of it. On the down side dinner was ruined and it was a real pain to clean up. Never so glad that I had a fire extinguisher in the house.

had the same thing happen but this was kinda my fault.
Iwas baking taco casserole and took it out of the oven and placed it on top of the stovetop. well I was using the stovetop earlier and forgot to turn the burner off.
I guess it got too hot and exploded everywhere!
I got a couple cuts on my arm and stepped in glass and got cuts on my feet. it was awful, but I am glad the kids where not in there when it happened.

Didn't read through, but I did the SAME exact thing a couple of years ago. I (looking back it was pretty dumb) added cold water so I'd have more drippings for the gravy and "boom". I liked that pan, too. I think it was an 11 X 7 -- have never gotten it replaced.

This happened (sorta) to us for my HS graduation party -- it was a hot day and my mom added cold punch to her crystal punch bowl (at room temperature in the days before central air). Exploded and red punch was everywhere.

It's fine to use -- just don't go to temperature extremes (cold water to hot pan, or refrigerated pan to microwave). Actually, thinking about it, I've gone from refrigerator to microwave before without problems. I did break a crock pot from temperature extremes once, though.

And nice to see the above poster from Chattanooga :) We're just minutes from there (northwest georgia).....high neighbor.

Hi! Nice to see another "local", lol.

Now I'm afraid to put anything in the oven....I guess we'll just have to eat out for the rest of the week. :rotfl:

Lori P. :)

Thanks, Lovesmurfs.

I'll warn him about temp changes and then he's on his own!!

Apparently Thanksgiving is a big day for glass explosions: a few years ago I put some frozen spinach into a glass bowl, then into the microwave to defrost. It didn't explode exactly, but did crack down the middle in several places. No creamed spinach that year!

I'm a little concerned about what someone said about glass cuttingboards though. I use mine under hotplates (i.e., when I remove a pot from the burner, I put it on the glass cuttingboard to cool). Guess that's a no-no too? Or are they made of something different than Pyrex glass? So confusing!

Thank you all for your posts!! I had just added tap water to the pan as I had many times. I'm shocked at the number of times this has happened!! :confused3 I liked my glass pan so much better than the metal ones that go dark and rust yeck!! My glass pan while being clear was a vast improvement and always cleaned up so well, and looked nice when serving from it. I had never put mine in the freezer, refrigerator, or Micowave.

It seems odd that alot of the Exploditions happened when cooking chicken??

I looked up the Pyrex website and found out That there is Only a 2 year warrenty on Pyrex Bakeware. I thought it was a lifetime warrenty?

Then Under Customer Care I found this,

Please post how Pyrex reacts to your concerns!!
