Respectfully snipped. My DW's 14-year old cousin has been told that she cannot go out on a date with a boy unless the request has been made vocally. It doesn't matter if he calls to ask her out, or if he asks her out in person, but it cannot be TEXTED. I think it's a great rule!

As a MUCH older than average college student () I am exposed to the constant texting for hours every day. Kids will sit through a lecture and not take one note. They'll text for an hour (or 90 minutes, depending on how long the class is) and it's very distracting to those of us who actually want to do well in the class. If I didn't see it with my own two eyes, I wouldn't believe how addicted these kids are to their phones!!

I think the art of conversation has suffered due to technology.

As has the art of handwriting. I'm reminded of this every time I try to scribble notes with a pen.

Personally, however, I love text-based communication i.e. EMAIL. My conversational skills have never been very good (I'm a guy, after all). I can communicate much more clearly using the written word.

That's been gone for a while. The most old school third grade teachers I know realize that they are teaching the kids something they probably will never use again.

I'd probably add spelling to that list also. Now between the text-language and spell check, my spelling has deteriorated, and it was never that great to begin with.

I'm not a big fan of cellphones. I think they have definitely made us a ruder society. I feel so bad for service workers, so many times people now treat them as "invisible" because they can't get off their phones while placing an order.

I'm horrified at the penmanship of my niece & nephews. Their spelling in emails or on facebook is even worse. Basic words. Only time something is spelled correctly is when they are copying & pasting song lyrics. That's how I know they didn't write or type it.
