My oldest DD is so sick

You are a great mother
Thanks!

She went to her doctor today. Definitely mono. He gave her a steroid & said to come back on Thursday. No work or school until then. Unfortunately, her main "work" is teaching at my studio & she was going to be taking over for me tonight & then teaching her own classes. Had to make other arrangements for that.

She also had an internship & they hired her for 2 days a week during school semesters, so she will be off of that for a bit longer too.

I called her college & said she would be out all this week. They will take care of it on their end & she'll take care of it through her professors.

Keeping my fingers crossed that everything goes well.

Glad she saw her Dr. And hopefully she can slowly start to feel better.

Everything will work out, and get better. Mono certainly SUCKS. No other words for it. I think I slept 24hrs a day. Really, along with steroids and vitamins, not much else you can do.:grouphug:

Sorry to hear your DD is sick w/mono and wishing her a speedy recovery . Altho ours are much older, know how it pulls at the heart strings to hear our babies (no matter their age) are under the weather. Hope you'll be together soon for some good old fashion TLC.

As a university prof...I wanted to post to clarify a few things.
1. Due to FERPA legal regulations, your daughter's professors are unable to speak to you about ANYTHING relating to her grades. While you can call to let them know she is very ill, they won't be able to discuss her options with you.

2. In general, incompletes can be requested if the student is in good standing prior to the unexepected event (sounds like she was). An incomplete is NOT a bad thing. Essentially, at most schools it goes on your record as an 'I' and you have until the end of the following semester to complete the work, at which time the I is removed from the transcript and replaced with a final grade.

As soon as she is able, your daughter should speak to all of her professors (email will work for starters). She needs to explain the situation and ask them how THEY would like her to proceed. Some will push her to take an incomplete (I would since mono will cause great fatigue which may make it difficult to stay on top of assignments), others may adapt the course assignments for her (but ethically some may have serious reservations about this).

Please remember that an incomplete is NOT A BAD THING. Grades are due on a specific day. No matter how much a prof might LIKE to give a student an 'extension', they may not be able to do so. Applying for an incomplete in a class is better than taking a low grade because the student is unable to complete the work in time.

Thank you for posting this.

I wanted to clarify that I didn't try to contact her professors. I actually just called the school & was contacted with the advisor's department. I asked about procedures that needed to be followed so that my DD could follow them.

They office did need to know what was her intended date to return to school as of today, which is 11-5-10. Her department will forward a letter to her professors & she must also contact her professors to move forward. Unfortunately, she also missed last week also due to the walking pneumonia.

One of her classes is an elective dance class, so I can't even begin to imagine what will happen in that case.

Thanks again for posting this. I am going to give her that information.

awwww.....even when they're grown, we worry about them. Older son had strep while a freshman in college, so I drove the five hours to bring him home for the weekend. (Of course, that meant I had to drive him back 2 days later!)

It sounds like she can hang in there 'til Wed. Not much you can do anyway - she should just sleep this away (along with the proper meds).

Hope she feels better soon.

I was really sick my first 3 years of college (multiple ailments that all resulted from an undiagnosed autoimmune disorder). I successfully graduated (even with some poor grades and some incompletes) and got into grad school. I am now working toward my Ph.D.

If your daughter wants to vent or talk to someone who has been in a similar situation, feel free to PM me.

I had an elective dance class and missed a couple weeks due to a severe kidney infection. I had to do a research project and perform a choreographed solo as "make up" work, but still got an A in the class. Since it was participation based the teacher had ways of allowing make up work for serious health issues. I've had mono and walking pneumonia. They count!

Hope she is better soon. Just know - having been there - that even after the initial recovery, her system my be run down for a while. I got sick more easily after having mono, and when I did I felt like I had mono all over again. You have to listen to your body and take it easy as this is not a quick recovery.
