My new bread machine!!!

I'm loving this thread. Especially the ideas about using the machine for mixing and proofing. And suggestions for meat and cheese rolls/bread?

My mom makes white bread dough and then rolls it out like she is going to make cinnamon rolls. Then she spreads ground ham (from leftover cooked ham) that's been mixed with a bit of mustard (yuck for me) and sprinkles grated cheese then rolls it up like a cinnamon roll and slices and bakes.

She knows not to put the mustard in if she wants me to eat it. Knowing her she probably adds some Mayo to it also (double yuck). I'm sure you can add some spices if you like.

Why does everyone seem to bake the bread in the oven, and not in the machine? :confused3

I always bake mine right in the machine. I just throw the ingredients in the pan, set the loaf size to 2 lb, set the crust darkness to medium, and choose the whole wheat setting. Then I walk away, and 3 1/2 hours later I have my loaf of bread. It turns out great, and my family always says they like it better than store bought bread. It couldn't be easier, and it only takes me about 10 minutes each time.

I understand for rolls and things like that, but not for just a loaf of bread.

For me, I just prefer the way my regular oven bakes and I like getting the dough out of the machine and shaping it and getting it in the pan. I can also add butter to keep the crust softer or add oats or whatever I want to the top of the bread. I guess it boils down to the fact that I like to have more control over the finished product plus I have the time to do it and if I didn't, I would be baking it right in the machine.

I received my bread machine 3 years ago for Christmas and haven't bought a loaf of bread since. My favorite recipes are on King Arthurs flour website. Our favorites are Honey-Wheat rolls, Beautiful buns for sandwichs during the week. The Oatmeal Toasting bread is amazing. Pita pockets are very good.

Tonight we made our own pizza dough, tomorrow night we are making tortillas for taco's. Also tried making strawberry jam for the firts time in it yesterday - is very yummy - didn't add any pectin so I am waiting to see how it firms up after being in the fridge.

I was hoping to get baguette pans and a new england hot dog roll pan for christmas. But I didn't. Very disappointed. Maybe Valentines day???

Have fun with it!!!

Almost forgot the recipe - my DS 15 and friends love this bread.

Soft as Wonder Bread

1 cup water (room temp.)
1 teaspoon salt
3 tablespoons margarine
1 tablespoon honey
3 cups all-purpose flour
1/4 cup powdered milk (not skim)
2 teaspoons sugar
1 1/2 teaspoons bread machine yeast
Directions:
1Add ingredients in order given (this is for my machine, your's maybe different). 2Select dough cycle. 3When done, take out dough and on a floured surface, shape into loaf and place in loaf pan. (I try to work it as little as possible). 4Let rise in a warm place for approximately 40 minutes until doubled in size. 5Bake on centre rack of preheated 350 degree oven for 25-30 minutes. 6Cool on wire rack before slicing.

I use powdered skim milk and haven't had any problems. I can't find powdered whole milk.

I should also mention I don't cook the bread in the machine but in the oven.

what is bread machine yeast? how do I locate that? is it different from regular yeast?

What kind of bread machine is a preferred brand? I want to start making our own bread soon:thumbsup2

This is a "duh" moment for me. I was given a breadmaker for Christmas about 5 years ago. I always baked in the machine. Never thought of kneading and mixing the dough, then baking in the oven. Yup, a "duh" moment. The lighbulb just went on in my head! Now to get the breadmaker out of the basement :).

This goes for me as well.:sad2:

I purchased a bread machine for $6 from Goodwill last year and have made quite a few loaves of bread :thumbsup2. Of course, after I purchased one I had a couple people tell me "You should've told me you were going to buy one! I've had one for years I've never used". So anyone who's looking for one, be sure and ask around first!

My across the street neighbors moved out this summer, and they left a great bread machine in their pile of stuff on top of the garbage, I ran out really early in the morning and snagged that beauty!:banana:

I'm glad to find all of these great recipes!

I am going to be getting a bread machine in a couple weeks. After looking around, I think I am going to get the newest Cusinart machine. I have several kitchen appliances of that brand, and they last FOREVER. I hope the bread machine will as well.

I am going to subscribe to this thread to pick up some recipes. :) I am 99% sure I am going to be baking in the machine most of the time, since I have a toddler and no extra time on my hands to mess with the bread. I just can't wait to stop paying $5+ on wheat bread in the little town I live in.

I am super excited this thread has taken off! I will post some of the recipes I have tried when I get a little more time. Glad I'm not the only person who uses one of these. I get the really weird looks from my friends and family when I tell them I use it. Made homemade hamburger buns tonight, along with the meat that my husband ground and seasoned. It's much cheaper to use my kitchen aid mixer to grind up cheap roast meat into hamburger meat when I don't have cheap hamburger in the freezer.

Also made pizza dough, best pizza crust I have ever made!

Enjoy your machines and keep those ideas coming.

I got a Zojirushi for Christmas to replace my 20+ year old Panasonic. I loved the Panasonic and it got a lot of use. But it only made a 1 1/2 pound square loaf and had a hard time with fresh ground flour. We have a family of 6 and the small loaf would be gone right away. I think I killed the motor with the heavy wheat flour I grind, I just couldn't get a good rise. Anyway, I love my new Zo. I've been wanting one for several years. I usually bake the bread in the machine since it makes a nice, regular shaped 2 pound loaf. With the Panasonic I would sometimes bake it in the oven so I could get a more normal shaped loaf. Or if I wanted to make buns or some other shape I would use the dough cycle.

I use the dough cycle as my machine is old 10+ and I don't like how it dries out the bread when it's baked in the machine.

I don't know if the newer machines are better at that or not. Mine is a Black and Decker.

Isn't that funny. One day I was tired, and I didn't slice the bread into very even slices. My DS was at school the next day, and another boy noticed his sandwich had one thick slice and one thin slice, and he asked DS about it. DS said my mom makes the bread instead of buying it from the store. The other boy said what is she old fashion or something. :rotfl:
