Sorry, if this is not on the right board, feel free to move it to the health issues or injury board...if the DIS has one.

Anyway....I heard a fire truck's sirens, followed by that of an EMT vehicle and looked outside to see what was going on!

My son was with her son who is the same age, and she had reached down to do something (still not sure what the heck prompted her to do that while the lawn mower was still running) and off went her finger! One other finger still has the tip attached, but it's hanging on by a thread (or should I say skin!)

The EMT's packed her finger on ice, so that maybe it can be reattached later today!

She's on her way to the hospital right now.

Scared the heck out of my son! I think he'll have a new respect for our lawn mower now!

Oh...and they dispatched a fire truck because it could get here quicker than the paramedics, and our volunteer firemen are also EMT's.

Oh my goodness! Yikes! Makes me glad I have no lawn to mow, that is something I can see happening to me!

ugh...that's horrible!

When I was younger, my dad cut the tip of his finger off with hedgetrimmers!

oh my goodness...this is such a scary thing. It happened to my neighbor across the street a few years back with a circular saw  and reattachment was unsuccessful :( My neighbor next door lost two of his to a snowblower  (the fingertips were found still inside the gloves' tips :o and they were able to reattach with success.

I hate to hear these things, yet mower accidents and the like seem to be getting almost common :(

Good luck and best wishes for your neighbor, I hope they are successful in her case.

That is way more common than people realize. I have seen so many of those injuries.

Oh.....that is so horrible! Just an ounce of common sense could have prevented this tragic accident. So very sorry for your neighbor.

Oh wow, that is awful!!! My uncle lost part of his finger to a chainsaw. I hope your neighbor has good luck getting it reattached.

I'm very sorry to hear that, Blondie. You have to be careful about your feet, too. When my kids mow the lawn, I am adamant that they wear closed-toe shoes.

 What a shame...hope they are successful in re-attching her finger. Will keep her our thoughts and prayers.

Of course I found this thread as my dh is mowing the lawn!! Best of luck to your neighbor!!!!!!

She must of had an OLD lawn Mower, the ones that are out now have the BAR that cuts OFF as soon as you let go. Hope she is OK. Maybe now her DH will cut the lawn.;)

One of my worst fears when Vince used to do the lawn, and for me also. Hoping the best for your neighbor, Blondie.

All the best that your neighbour will have a successful re-attachment of her finger, Blondie. It made me shiver to read of her accident.

My Dad had an accident with the lawn mower many years ago. He was backing up a hill and slipped ~ he lost his second toe and part of his big toe. When he was hobbling around on crutches and a large pressure bandage, people would ask him "Lawnmower?". Because of that day, I have never let the kids mow the lawn even though they are now 15 and 18! I am extra, extra careful and very respectful of the lawnmower!

I have seen it happen with the new lawnmower's poohbear, someone holds the bar down while trying to clear a chute because they don't want to restart it, or someone else reachs in. Safety devices don't help if there is no common sense

My nephew lost a toe to a lawnmower also about ten years ago. The hysterical part was that he was so calm when the ambulance came that they thought my SISTER was the injured one! She was so distraught they came after her! :earseek:

Prayers for your neighbor, Blondie!

I hope they can help her! Reattachment is not always do-able. Older DS lost the tip of his left little finger to a drainage grate last December. It's still sensitive - & he gets that "phantom pain" sometimes too. (Who knew that a little finger could be so important!)
Hope your son wasn't too traumatized by this Blondie!

I have to admit I was one of those people that had the safety thing down so I didnt have to restart it, and, like an idiot I stuck my and in there to sweep out the grass. LUCKILY, I didnt get in there too deep so nothing happened. It was after I finished that I realized how STUPID I was to do such a thing.
