My parents just returned from a trip to WDW. Before they left, my mother asked me about Expedition Everest. They go every year, so I compared it to other rides she'd be familiar with. Here's what I told her:

"It's faster than Big Thunder Mountain Railroad, but doesn't throw you around in the seat as roughly. It's not nearly as fast as Rockin' Roller Coaster. There is a section where you go backwards for about 30 seconds, and a lot of the ride is in the dark."

When they got home, she said she screamed her head off the whole time and was wobbly-kneed for a half hour after getting off. She says she'll never trust my opinion of a ride again. (This was said mostly for the sake of giving me a hard time to be funny, but I think was inspired by a grain of truth.)

Now I ask you, did I mis-represent E:E with my description? I still stand by it.

I will be screaming at you as well too. I used to be able to ride the space-mtn, Tower of Terror and other similar rides too(like years ago) Now that I am older, the only ride I could ride so far was Thunder Mtn. I also told my son to give me time to rekindle with the thrill. Because last year I got really REALLY sick after the MAD TEA CUP PARTY. Wait a minute now, don't laugh at me, I was green for more than 30 minutes.
So please take it easy with your mom. KK

I find it so hard to accurately describe rides, it's so subjective. Stick to the objective descriptions (in the dark, 30 seconds backwards) and not the subjective ones like "as roughly", "as fast", etc. My mom won't go on space mountain, but she loves Big Thunder, but I would call those rides roughly equal in terms of thrill level. I would put ToT at the top of my scary thrill list, but others might list RnR, M:S, or even Dinosaur as being their scariest ride. It all depends on the person.

When I got off the ride for the first time, my exact words were, "It's Big Thunder 2.0." I would describe Everest pretty much exactly as you did. For the record, I'm pretty much a coaster chicken, but I loved EE.

I think you did a great job describing it! I think it just affects people differently. I love EE!

I agree, you did a nice job describing it.

OK, here's my dilemna. I have a son who'll be 7 who loves BTMRR, Space Mtn, and thinks Splash is good too, but is always a little intimidated at first when viewing the final plunge at splash. Once he rides it, he wants to do it again. He does not really like Dinosaur at AK. Thinks the ride is much to jerky (I agree) and isn't keen on the dino breathing down on him.

SO....do we EE or not??? Looking at the newest UG front cover w/ EE I think, no way, he's going to take 1 look at that plunge and chicken out. But if I get him on it (stating how he feels the same way about Splash but always enjoys it) will he be totally freaked by the Yeti? I know, who can really say. I've prepared him that the yeti will be chasing the car like the dinosaur does....but I just don't know. How scary is the yeti????

It is smoother than BTMRR but seemed almost as intense as RNR to me. I get sick on rides but loved it. My DD 6 just made the 44 inches by a hair and she wanted to ride and let's just say she only rode once because it scared the you know what out of her. She loves BTMRR though.

DD9 love BTMRR, RnRC, and Space Mtn, but I think she was a little "put off" by EE. She rode it with friends (sat with the friend's mom) - I am a TOTAL chicken - and she still talks about the day I MADE her ride it. I knew she wanted to try it, but I would never ride it, and this was an opporunity for her to ride with another adult!

I think the part that bothered her the most is the backwards part - at least that is the part she mentions the most..... I know she was glad she tried it, but it's not one that she wants to rush back too (like BTMRR her favorite!)

Since she's your mother, I trust she's a few years older than you. Somewhere on this board, there's a good thread about the fact that many rides are harder to handle as we get (ahem) less young. I can't handle EE. When that ride whippy-whirlied, my stomach whippy-whirlied and it took over 2 hours for the motion sick feeling to go away.

Your story reminds me of one from a huge family vacation to WDW a few years ago. We were all at MGM and my Mother asked me about RNRC. I hadn't been on it in a while and told her that I knew it went upside down, but I only thought it did that once. Halfway through the ride I could hear my Mom SCREAMING, and my FIL in the back yelling, "YOU LIED TO YOUR MOMMA!!! YOU LIED TO YOUR MOMMA!!" It was freakin' hilarious.

I'm sorry but I'd scream too. People on here compared it to Thunder Mountain, but just a lot higher up. Oh boy were they wrong!
If I was telling someone about Everest, I'd make sure to go into detail about the backwards part. It made me dizzy, disorientated, and scared me a lot. After reading on here that it was like TM, I just wasn't expecting it. I felt ill for most of the day.

EE is new since the last time we were there in January and I'm excited to try it. I get really bad motion sickness, but always take non-drowsy Dramamine. I love the Rock N' Rollercoaster, so do you think I'll be okay riding this? Everything about it just looks so cool that I can't wait.

First, your description was realistic and accurate. Second, tell Mater to lighten up on you or she'll have to find someone else to change her Depends for her in the coming years.

I think this is the key part that makes the ride so different from person to person: how the backward Gs affect you. I've personally never had a problem with it, but my friend Liz (twotoohappy) had the dizzy, wobbly feeling for a while after and we like similar rides... :confused3

Another friend of mine who is a CM described it as BTMRR "all grown up".

So I think EE should be tried at least once (like M:S) - then you'll know if you like it or not!!! :teeth:

I agree. It is very to describe rides. I, for example, tend to rate rides on the "jerky/bumpy" factor. I do not care for rides that I call jerky/bumpy rides.

So, I do not like Big Thunder Railroad Mountain, Dinosaur, nor Star Tours. (All three are jerky/bumpy rides.)

On the other hand, I really enjoy Splash Mountain, Tower of Terror, and Expedition Everest. (All three of these are what I would call "smooth rides.")

To each his own methinks.

Enjoy.

Don't feel bad. I didn't think I would ever hear the end of it from one of my friends about ToT. Personally, I don't think ToT is anywhere near as motion sensitive as EE - so I said so. Keep in mind that my friend didn't ride EE, but you would have thought I was trying to kill her!

My personal opinion: If people don't think they'll do okay on the ride, just stay off. No one is going to be able to give you an accurate description of another person's experience on the ride.

Seriously, I think you did a great job of describing the ride. I loved EE. Can't wait to go on it again. That Yeti is impressive (and a little bit scary)!

Ok Dave,
Repeat after me, I've been a very, very bad boy! I loved EE. Experienced it for the first time a few weeks ago but I thought the "backwards part" was intense. Which probably tells you about my mental state  because I was immediately ready to go back on. When folks ask me about it, I usually just say it was "awesome but intense."
look at it this way, maybe you and mama can plan another trip just to see who's right. :thumbsup2

One's body is the most complex creature on earth, and one can never know how a ride will effect them until they try it for themselves. As I get older (and I'm only 32), I am getting more and more sensitive to steep drops. Splash Mountain last year was just too much for me, yet BTMR and the teacups were no problem. Going backwards is the worst for me, so there will be no EE for me. I take it in stride and tell myself it just frees time up to do other things!
