on Nat Geo Wild is about a private zoo not five miles down the road from us here in the wilderness of MI's UP! The owner and his girlfriend are there 24/7 and it's amazing all the critters they have. The owner has gotten a little more careful, but we have pix of DS over the years holding almost all the baby animals that have been raised at the place. Now to have them on national tv is very cool:thumbsup2. It's going to be replayed a few times, so if you get this station, give it a try! And if you ever come up to see them, give us a holler!

I know it's not widely available yet. We have DISH, and they just started carrying it last week. Joke: our town is so small ("how small is it...") that the local bar rented a huge screen and is showing it so that everyone can crowd in and see it!

Which one is that? My family lives in the UP and we pass a small zoo that is open year round that I wanted to stop at, wasn't sure if that was the one you're speaking of. I think the road is 2, that I'm thinking of, or maybe M35

De youngs? I love that place. I got to hold a baby anaconda last time I was there. This was a huge step for me. I HATE snakes.

Yup, DeYoungs. It's 20 miles north of Menominee/Marinette off of Hwy 41 (about 80 miles due north of GB). It really is amazing how he just "hands animals off" to you and says, "enjoy"!

My favorite Buddy story was when my BF, a 20 year Army vet, came to visit me in the dead of winter with his 3 young kids. Even though the zoo was clossed, Bud had me bring them over, and gave us an amazing tour. They held and petted everything there (except the big cats, obviously, although the young cougar they had at the time was draped around DF's neck!). My favorite picture was of DF's DD surrounded by wolves, completely at peace. Bud wouldn't take a penny for admission from them, because of "service to our country". Despite having traveled around the world, DF said it was a once in a lifetime experience.

Pebbles, I wonder if you're thinking of the one on Hwy 2 right at the top of the lake? I've never been there. And funky, you should PM me next time you're up here, we could have a mini UP DISmeet:)!

Come to think of it, there are two. One of them is realllly far up. My grandpa is a bit south of Sault Ste. Marie but when you mentioned Marinette, I do know which one you're talking about. I'll have to stop up there next month! I'll have to see if there is a website for them. I'll also have to watch out for the show on Nat Geo!!

Here's their website

And the Soo is the *real* UP, we're just in the banana belt:lmao:

Terri

The banana belt. Hahah! I do love that area though. I drive through the area on my way up there and usually stop at Schloegels (sp). After that area though, there is nothing but trees the rest of the way up so a stop at the zoo may be a good place to break before the boring stretch of road.

I know it was mentioned that your son got to love up the baby animals, does that still happen or is it allowed?

I was wondering if interaction with the animals was still allowed also. And what type of animals they have. I guess I could go to their website, I just like to also get information from people who have been to the place. Thanks for any help you are able to provide.
