Oh my gosh my DS had a mild stomach bug last week, so when my DH started complaining about pain I told him to suck it up because it was just a 24 hour thing. Well that was 4th of July. I just got back from the Trauma Center and he has Diverticulitis. He's on 2 different antibiotics and a clear liquid diet.Needless to say he isn't very happy with my bedside manner.Oh well who would have thought it was something like that :sad2:

The same thing happened to my DM. Heres some pixiedust: to help him feel better.

My Grandmother suffered from this. She did much better when she didn't eat anything with an "edge" on it. Or anything greasy.

French fries
Sesame seeds (on breads and buns)
Fried chicken
gravy
fried eggs
croutons

My Grandfather had this and avoiding nuts was good too.

My sister and I both have diverticulosis and it can turn to ITIS very quickly. She was hospitalized for eating a cucumber once!

I ate popcorn while watching Lilo and Stitch and ended up in Piedmont Hospital. Needless to say I don't eat it anymore!

The Mayor of Detroit, Kwame Kilpatrick, is currently hospitalized in Houston, Texas with Diverticulitis. Sounds painful.

both my grandmother and dad have this. seems to be becomeing more and more common. my dad has to watch any medicines (like celebrex) that can upset your stomach.

I have it. Popcorn brought on the last episode. I have to try and avoid any nuts, seeds (sesame type), popcorn hulls and on and on.

Corn brought on my stepdad's last episode. I think cashews did too. He was told to avoid things with seeds and all kinds of nuts. Not that he listens  But that's another thread

Dh has had a couple of episodes over the years. But, it has been a very long time - years - since he had any problems. Knock on wood!

What's the difference betweeen -osis and -itis? My parents both have one or the other and don't eat any food with seeds: strawberries, cukes, tomatoes, nuts, etc.

-osis is you have the condition.

-itis is when you get an infection.

Just tell him you were praticing your House md. impression! :thumbsup2

My dad has diverticulosis. When he was diagnosed the doctor told him that EVERYONE will develop this if they live long enough. :confused3 Something to look forward to?!

Diverticuli are little sacs or protrusions at weak spots in the colon wall. My book says that 2/3 of people age 85 and older in the US will develop these. Having these diverticuli is "Diverticulosis." 10-25% of people with Diverticulosis will, at some point, develop Diverticulitis...this is when the diverticuli become involved in an inflammatory process. The symptoms can be quite varied. The development of these disease processes seem to be closely related to low-fiber diets common in Western cultures today. For uncomplicated cases of diverticulitis, low-residue diet and 7-10 days of antibiotics are the most common treatments.

Gotta love Nursing School and all the associated research papers I've been writing!

Thanks everybody. I am trying to find as much info about this as I can. I know older people are more likely to get it, but my DH is only 35.I guess I will try to be a little more sympathetic when he's sick. When any of the kids aren't feeling well I am like freakin June Cleaver waiting on them hand and foot, but when it's him I just tell him to suck it up and go to work.Probably because that's what I do.

MIL just recently had her colon restructured due to divertickulitis
DH has been tested and we're waiting on the results. He's had divertickulitis for 10yrs now. They are considering the restructing for him too.
