my honest review of Port Orleans Riverside

Hi all. Just a quick update.

Today has been magical. Not sure what's changed, perhaps my jetlag is less.. but anyway. The weather has been stunning and we have all just seemed to settle in...

I have to say, the POR is extremely beautiful. The colours set against the deep blue sky today, looked, unreal.

ALL cms have been great today, including the one that hadn't performed well over the last two days.

Thanks again all.. I know sometimes it's not nice to see negatives written about a resort you love. I will say to anyone coming to stay here.. I'd ask for a room in Oak building (yes I know they are royal rooms and I said before they are not worth the extra money. Ignore me, they are, purely for location)

I've stayed at a lot of wdw resorts...I think the only ones I haven't stayed at are GF, FtW, CSR, CBR and POFQ.

You really should try POFQ. I agree about the buses when it comes to POR, but POFQ is the first stop on the PO run and there's only the one stop, so you are guaranteed a seat, and should the bus be full after that stop, they immediately go on to the park and skip POR. It's also the first stop on the way back, which is great. And it only takes a few minutes to get to anywhere in the resort, which is great with little kids. And I've NEVER had a rude CM all 5x I've been there, including workers at the Front Desk, the gift shop, the restaurant or the pool. And the refurbished rooms are awesome (the old ones were a little gaudy).

Can you guess that I love POFQ?:yay:

Sorry you are having these experiences,OP. I stayed at POR and had a fine stay but this was about 7 years ago..things can change.

I do prefer POFQ because it is smaller. Everyone there was very polite too this past April.

I am so happy that things have turned around!

I do agree POR needs tables directly by the pool. They do have tables right outside the food court which we enjoy but if you want to eat near the pool you are left to balance a tray on your lap on a lounge chair which is not fun lol.

Only Disney can retheme distant rooms and charge more and get by with it! The pirate rooms at CBR are even in a worse location than the Royale rooms at POR.

I am just thrilled things are turning around. That is a long way to travel to have lousy service. I hope your good luck stays for the rest of your visit!

I posted this on the POR FAQ thread on 05/05/2014:

We just got back from an impromptu weekend stay at PO-R. We booked a garden view room - did online check-in and requested higher floor near elevators. The day before our arrival, I called and requested a mansion room in Magnolia Bend. Upon check-in, we were given a room in Acadian House (room 8040) which was great - first floor, not so great.

My experience:

*The room was very clean, A/C worked very well, and mousekeeping was thorough.

*The grounds were beautiful, and it was a very pleasant walk to the food court via Ol' Man Island.

*I did not like that the smoking section was right on the main walkway along the river, because it smelled horrible even when nobody was actually smoking there - walking through a cloud of smoke was even worse. Normally, I don't have an opinion about a designated smoking area, because an effort is typically made to keep it away from the main areas. As a former smoker, I understand (and appreciate) the importance of having such an area! However, it was a huge turn-off to have it in such a prominent location.

*The beds were terribly uncomfortable. Cheap mattress - could feel (and hear) the springs. I tossed and turned all night, both nights, because I could not get comfortable. Awful.

*The bedside clock did not work - no display, and yes, I checked to see that it was plugged-in. LOL This was not a big deal, because I had my cell phone.

*Boatwright's Dining Hall - loud, loud, loud! We arrived 20 minutes ahead of our ADR time, and we were seated after a lengthy wait of 25 minutes. This wasn't a huge deal, because we were quite early. The hostess station had 3 people trying to work it, and it appeared to be rather disorganized. Our server was very pleasant, but he was not very attentive. The food was ok - not bad, but not great. DD and I had shrimp and grits - my mother had the pork chop. For what we paid, we definitely will not eat there again.

*Riverside Mill - We had two meals here - dinner and breakfast...

The dinner experience was good - we arrived at the perfect time, apparently, because the place was virtually empty! DD had chicken nuggets and fries - my mother had a BBQ pulled pork sandwich and fries - I had the create your own pasta. The chicken nuggets are the same as everywhere else on property, it seems - hot, fresh, nothing extraordinary, but better than most fast food restaurants (except Chick-fil-a LOL). My mom said the sandwich was ok - not sure what that meant, but there you have it. My pasta was very good - penne with alfredo sauce, broccoli, artichoke hearts, onion, garlic, and chicken. There was a TON of it, too!

The breakfast experience was terrifying - we arrived at a terrible time, because that place was packed wall-to-wall with irritated adults and screaming children. :crazy2: There was no seating, so you had to wait for someone to clear a table and then book it over there before someone else got there first... all while carrying a tray of food. I saw a lot of people taking food back to their rooms - probably the smartest idea for that particular time of day. The food was typical QS breakfast foods - nothing extraordinary, but all hot, fresh, and ok.

Bottom line - this is a good place for a typical QS meal ***IF*** you can time it right!

*Bus service - We were closest to the North Depot, and every bus we took to the parks was standing room only. I can't even imagine how miserable it would have been if it was during a really busy time of year! The bus rides back to the resort, however, were fine - plenty of seats.

*My overall experience has led me to decide that this resort is not a good choice for me. It's lovely for many reasons, and I can truly see how it is a favorite for many people, but I would not choose to stay here again. Still, it was a good weekend, and we had a great time! :goodvibes

Astonishingly, when someone is having righteous issues, even resort-lovers can help out. There are actually a few of us who adore POR in here. Trying to help out the OP.

In fact lovers of a particular resort, IMO, can help they most because they KNOW that this is not the norm and truly want to get things fixed.

Exactly. I love POR. We've always had a great experience there. That said, what the OP relayed isn't the norm for us and really, really unfortunate. I'm of the opinion these things need addressed with mgt immediately, but when you are tired, jet lagged it isn't something you want to fuss with. However, I do hope the OP does now they are feeling more back to their regular self. The whole photopass thing for going to DTD drive me nuts this last trip, but with the MB, it does facilitate this better, but the instructions are less than stellar and those instructions should be given out at check-in even if just as a sheet of FAQ's.

Glad things are going better for you. I find, as a PP mentioned, that POR isn't so vast/meandering/confusing the longer you are there. Let's face it once you have taken on the parks, POR is basically like a small parking lot. The walking becomes less of an issue. I know after being at the parks, walking may not be fun, but it is less walking than anywhere in the parks, but I digress.

Even as POR fan, I've found a few "less than happy" CM's in the crazy POR food court. It isn't big enough, traffic flow is poor and sometimes there's not enough registers. It needs a big remodel. I'm a space/flow freak, so, again, I digress.

As for the pool, I swear there were tables in the back row, closest to the path over by the water slide, but maybe they have taken them away. Good drinks at the bar, though. :thumbsup2

We stayed in the Royal rooms this last trip. Royal Riverfront in Oak. Convenient to the 2nd foot bridge and the quiet pool was nice and never busy. Did my laundry and had a swim. Very relaxing. Would we take the splurge again for them...not sure. Acadian or Magnolia were just as nice/convenient.

I can't justify, at this point, the expense of the Deluxes for as little we are in our room. Just can't. Bad experiences at values - noise, etc. DD hates clowns, so no POFQ for us. LOL, I know....weird. The location is nice for DTD. We have a car, so we drive to AK, EP & DHS.

Please relay your concerns. Changes don't happen if nobody says anything.

Have a great rest of the trip!

Glad things turned around for you!

The POR Army has arrived!!!
 nothing wrong with saying you like a resort.

I am on the clock... The original Poster should have the means to reach me if not they can PM me anytime and I will help sort this out asap!

The Oak building where we are located is one of the closest to the food hall but even this is a fair distance away to just nip over and get a drink. I'd hate to be staying in some of the other buildings further away.

.

Seriously ?!?!? I mean ... seriously, your 2 - 5 min walk is too much ? Lol.

As for the rest, we were just there this week with family, people seemed nice to me, and the resort was just as beautiful as I remembered from last year.

We were also at AKL, and I would be hard pressed to choose between the two resorts. They both have some great features.

And yes, its on you to tell the person what you are paying with. QSDP, DDP, DP, Platinum DP, Cash, Charge, Tables in Wonderland, DVC Discount, AP discount, etc.... The cashiers would take double the time if they rand through the gambit of possible paying choices with each customer.

Sorry you aren't enjoying your stay at the resort, and if people have actually been sharp with you, not acceptable, but the walking issue and the payment type issue ... lol.

Sorry to hear that you had such a bad time. I've been to POR and POFQ and my wife and I loved both but Riverside more.

Did you read the OP's updates?

And your post comes across as a bit rude. Not sure if you meant to be, but other posters have tried to be helpful and I am just not seeing that with your post. The OP is probably not as familiar with discussing the payment options as you (and other Disfans) might be. There is no need to get rude about it, the Dis exists for the more experienced fans to educate others in a friendly atmosphere.

My family recently returned from our fist stay at POR. I had been stalking the POR thread for 200 days prior to our vist so I had high expectations. I was not disapointed. As far as Royal rooms not being worth it, like the OP has discovered they are, but not for the decor. We had a 2nd floor riverview room at Parterre place near the bridge and I cannot be convinced that a better location exists. I'll pay extra all day every day and be glad to do it. The buses are by far the worst part of this resort for us but that was remedied by utilzing the PFQ buses especially when coming home from the parks which is another advantage of the Royal room location.
As far as the food court, the madness was expected but I was rather impressed at how fast we could get our food and find a table for being so crowded. Rude cast members...I didn't encounter any but if I did I wouldn't have been shocked. I halfway expect a certain percentage of people to just be unfriendly regardless of thier occupation.

OP, I hope you have a great rest of your trip and try the PFQ buses coming home at busy times.

Do you work at POR? If so, that is some sweet service! :thumbsup2

I do work for Disney but not POR. But my motto is if you work for Disney your job is customer service no matter where you are assigned. Some lose track of that after training. But I am in the Deluxe Resort area and I float between Poly, CR, GF, and WL. I perform retraining of CMs at Guest Relations and Concierge.

Well that was still very cool of you to offer to help.

I was under the impression that the POFQ busses and the POR busses were the same and stop at both resorts?
