My first attempts at Selective Coloring... and now others' pics too!

Thanks! I fear that right now it is WAY WAY WAY over my head as I do not understand a darned thing about photoshop, layers, layer masks, or anything else that doesn't have to do with cropping or the occasional clone tool. I have alot to learn. I'll wait for the PSE 5.0!

Ok, I'm just using this cool photo as my example (although they are all great!), but how is this done? Is this a photoshop thing? I have photoshop elements, but I think it is like version 1.0 as it doesn't even have a version number on the disc. However, I am hoping to get PSE 5.0 for my birthday this weekend. Is there a setting or something that will do this? My camera (S2 IS) can do one color selective, but not many different ones so I am assuming this is done in post processing somehow.

In-camera effects are not worth messing with IMHO. Photoshop or PSE is the way to go.

1. open the phone and copy it into a new layer
2. desaturated that new layer to turn it black and white
3. erase what you'd like to colorize (either with the eraser, lasso, or magnetic lasso).

In-camera effects are not worth messing with IMHO. Photoshop or PSE is the way to go.

1. open the phone and copy it into a new layer
2. desaturated that new layer to turn it black and white
3. erase what you'd like to colorize (either with the eraser, lasso, or magnetic lasso).

Don't use the eraser tool; add a layer mask instead and paint with black where you want the color to show through! Then, you can always go back and make changes if you don't like it. Much more flexibility. With the new CS3, there is a black and white adjustment layer - you get better black and white results especially if you look under the presets - you'll find some great presets that will make your black and white image look tons better. Then, you can use its layer mask to paint away at parts you want to show through. If you want less color to show through, lower the opacity of your paint brush and your colors will be more muted.

Holy Cow, I did it! It's not that great, and I am still not quite sure how I did it, but I did it anyways. Here is the final result. I can tell that this will certainly lead to many hours of messing around wih photos.

How FUN!!! Thanks for posting this. I've wanted to learn this trick for a while and just never got around to doing it. Here is my first attempt, although the picture colors weren't too bright to begin with. Just glad to go through the motions. Now I'm off to do some more!
