My DS11 got a package of Ramen Noodles for Trick or Treat!

Many years ago, a chinese immigrant moved next door to my parents. He had very limited english, but was working hard to learn the language. Halloween is a big time on our street--it is a walkable area, so lots of people drive and bring their kids, even though they don't live in the neighborhood.

Anyway, the guy next door was completely baffled by trick or treating. When the first group came by, he went to his kitchen and got packets of oatmeal and hot chocolate. When we realized the problem, we went over and gave him a bag of our candy. He enjoyed the tradition after he had the candy. He moved before the next Halloween so I don't know if he participated the next year or not.

I pitied the kids that got the oatmeal!

I don't do treat bags but this year I had a bunch of goodies left over from doing them for ds's school party that I just gave them out with the candy. My kids get a few but most people just give them loose candy. When I was a kid I don't remeber getting treat bags, but I do remember getting apples and unwrapped necco wafers

I don't have kids, but I can say from peeking in ToT'ers bags that there was a lot of variety as far as candy. All of the favorites were there including m&ms, payday, hershey's, baby ruth, whoppers, reese's, etc. Plus, I saw a lot of pixie sticks, twizzlers, gum, and other non-chocolate type candy. I also saw some bags of chips and pretzels. So all in all I would say my neighborhood hands out a pretty large variety of treats.

I myself handout a variety of things. I had chocolate treats as wells as twizzlers, gum, and smarties. I do this for a variety of reasons. The non-chocolate treats help to stretch the budget since we give out sooo much candy. I handed out nearly 500 pieces last night. Also, I know there are some kids who have peanut allergies and can't have the reese's or even a of the chocolate bars because they are manufactured near peanuts and I always feel bad for them, and finally, when we were growing up my brother always traded away his chocolate for the pixie sticks, twizzlers and smarties. He just wasn't a fan. So I like to have things for those kids, too.

I also make treat bags for a few of the neighbor kids (unfortunately, I can't do it for all of the kids. It's just way too expensive.) And I had cookies for the two babies (both about a year old).

All the kids in our neighborhood (we live in the country, houses are far apart) have grown up so we don't get kids coming here to ToT anymore. :(

But when we did I made up bags of candy. I'd buy bags of chocolate candy bars, Smartees, Milk Duds, all kinds, maybe a dozen different kinds. Then I put one of each thing into sandwich bags and gave those out.

We never ran out so I never had to resort to being "creative" and raiding the cupboards for other stuff to give the kids.

I lived across the street from an orthodontist when I was little and he used to hand out toothbrushes.

We also had this little old lady in my neighborhood that every year would hand out goggles. We never knew why, but we loved going to her house to get a new pair each year.

I dispise chocolate, so as a kid I would always try to get as much non-chocolate as possible. my sisters had a deal to get now and laters (my favorite) at any stop and I would get reeses with my chocolate. Then we traded haha.

DS got a Mild taco sauce packet from Taco Bell...hey, at least they were thoughtful about kids and got the mild packets.

These are so funny! It makes me think about one of my favorite "Everybody Loves Raymond" episode. Anyone know which one I am talking about?;)

I give out bags every year, because I am making them for DS9's class. I just make enough for his class, then put the rest into bags to give out. We don't get many beggers, so this year I put out about 30 bags, then in the bottom of the basket I put about 15 of those Halloween granola bars a PP talked about. I had 4 bags left and 1 or 2 granola bars. So that proves that A)I estimated pretty good and B) some kid didn't just dump the whole basket into his bag. C) the granola bars were an OK treat after all.

Next year I think I will buy a box of the mini micro popcorn bags from Sams, the kids really seem to like that.

My mom used to have a couple of rolls of coins on hand to give out just in case she ran out of candy.

I am loving this thread. I cannot believe some of the things you guys got esp the post about getting TOILET PAPER!:lmao:

And taco bell sauce packet? I mean really. That would hit the garbage.

DD11 got a plastic bottle of wedding bubbles. She said the guy giving them out was wearing a pirate costume. Needless to say they went in the garbage because we thought it was odd. LOL

It seems as if there are less and less goody bags in the kids ToT bags. My sons each got 1.

We have 1 neighbor who hands out hot cocco packets, which is a nice change.

We have another neighbor who hands out candy to the kids and for babies and little ones (who you know won't be eating laffy taffy and other candies) she hands out lunch box apple sauce containers...they come 6 to a pack.

We handed out Sweedish fish and then animal crackers for the lil ones.

We used to get a lot of popcorn and other bagged snacks from a company called Keystone Snacks, but the kids didn't get any this year.

One house was handing out soda, grilling hot dogs, air popped popcorn as well as goody bags (in the goody bags was info on their church inviting everyone to visit). They also had a DJ.....they were quite the hit!

One house used to give out dollar bills rolled up and tied with a ribbon!! We LOVED going to that house when we were kids.

Last year one house in our neighborhood gave out $5 bills! They were away this year but I am thinking they probably spent less money going away.

No wierd ones here I did get a blinking rave necklace- (I'm 44 by the way) but the kids didn't get anything too funny. But last year DD got a box of bandaids!
OH And I forgot last year we GOT a bottle of wine! A local restaurant that we go to trick or treated in our neighborhood and brought us a bottle of wine to thank us for inviting them into our neighborhood! (Um It's a free country anyone can come on in- but I thought it was super nice and we enjoyed the wine! And go even more frequently to the restaurant so I'm guessing we've more than paid for it)

I was emptying out DS9 TOT stash and out popped a small silver key:confused3 We only TOT a few streets but I have no clue who the key would belong to. And if I tried to go out tomorrow I have no clue whose house to even start at.

What would you do with the key??? I would hate to throw it out.

DS9 and DS10 were TOT a few steps ahead of me (I had DS2 and DD6) so I wasn't able to catch it if I could.

I feel terrible that I have someone's key that is probably tearing their house apart trying to find their lost key.

MAYBE DS9 and I should try retracing our steps tomorrow and maybe make a little not saying a key was found in the candy. :confused3

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Did they only TOT to houses? DD and her freinds went to our local locksmith and they gave out keys. DD and her freinds love them as they wear them as jewlery.

My kids love going to this house on the corner, they give goody bags with toys from Oriental trading. Well that was the first house the kids went to, before we went to DD bff block to go trick or treating. When I got home with DS, DH was sitting in the fmaily room, he said he just came in, that he had been outside al day..I was like what?? DH usually sits in the basement. He said that we alot of kids starting showing up, and he gave out the pretzels with a little play doh package (I forgot we had them). ANd the last kid that was there said that was the coolest treat she got all day. DH said wait till you get to the house on the corner..she laughed and said that was her house! :lmao:

Thankfully my kids just got lots and lots of candy...several full size ones too.

I gave out a dog biscuit last night...a group of kids had their dog with them (a boxer) and I gave the kids candy but couldn't resist giving the dog a treat too.

One house used to give out dollar bills rolled up and tied with a ribbon!! We LOVED going to that house when we were kids.

My DS11 got one of those when he was 4. It was rolled up REALLY tight and resembled something I had never used, but you know what I am thinking;)..it was an elderly couple so I doubt they even thought of what it could also be used for.

Just in case I am being too vague, the rolled up dollar bill looked like the ones they use to snort cocaine.

Anyone else get anything different than the norm?

Not really different in a strange kind of way... but one house wrapped mini candy bars with stretchy first aid tape to look like a mummy, complete with glued on googly eyes. We have tons of TOT's in this neighborhood, I can't even imagine how long they spent mummifying all those candies.

DD said the funniest thing she encountered was a set of next door neighbors; one house gave king size candy bars, the other gave individually wrapped life savers. Not a handful, or a few, or even 2 or 3, but just one lifesaver per child. Not a big deal really, except since the kids had just come from the candy bar house, the lifesaver house was a tad underwhelming. ;)

My kids got packets of cococa mix and a religious tract and coin with the 10 commmandments on it. :)
