My dog was poisoned by my neighbor on purpose

Lots of assumptions being made 'round here. The sheriff will investigate and decide where the blame lies. I'm also stymied once again how people are harping on the use of the word "crazy". I also think my sister is "crazy" for wanting to stay in a condo instead of on-site at WDW on our next visit. It's a term often bandied about to refer to one who's judgement is questionable. Like people who wear white socks with black shoes!

My wife thinks that I am crazy sometimes - especially when we are in WDW... :rotfl2:

If the OP had been a RESPONSIBLE pet owner, there would be no reason for the neighbor to have made threats. The OP saying "We have been keeping the dogs inside and penned up since she started being an ***" Does that not indicate she was not keeping them penned up all along? Of course it does. Not being a responsible pet owner.

That is true. Pet owners should make sure their pets are on their own property or on leases if out in public. But IF the dog was poisoned, then that is an unacceptable thing for the neighbor to do.

We used to live in the country and had a 5 acre lot. All of our neighbors had large lots. My parents used to let our dogs roam free. They should never have done that, but they did. One night I opened our front door to give meat scraps to the dogs, and I found one of them with a broken neck on our door step. It was probably our neighbor who was tired of our dog going on to his property.

My parents were at fault for letting the dogs roam. But it does not make it right to break a dog's neck and lay it on the owner's doorstep. It takes a special kind of evil to kill a person's pet.

Sorry it has taken a while to answer your questions. First off Champ made it through the night and is stable. He will have to stay at the vets till Monday.

This neighbor left a letter in another neighbors mailbox threatening to shoot any animal in her yard last week. She also tried to hit her small deceased dog with a stick in front of her and her children and then cursed her out. I tried to get her to go to the police but she did not.

Tuesday this week she found her bleeding from the bum and her dog died at the vet. The liver is being tested to confirm rat poisoning. I contacted animal control and asked about complaints about my dog. None on record. I also told her about poisoning suspicion. She was very helpful.

Yesterday when Champ was diagnosed by our vet, I went to animal control and she insisted I file a report. The Sherrif is now involved and investigating my complaint and the other neighbor complaint. The detective feels that the letter confirms her involvement.

I am the first to say that all dogs should be kept in a fenced yard and not allowed to roam free, but if the neighbor had an issue with dogs in HER yard she should call the dog warden/animal control or talk to the dog's owners. Poisoning the animals isn't the correct response.
but when they don't respond - like with cats - what do you do then...?
OP's statements do not imply she allowed her dog to be a menace at all! We have no idea what the chronology of events is that led to this neighbor doing something so vile. All we know is the neighbor made threats, two dogs are suspiciously dead or in need of emergency treatment.

If this neighbor made similar threats about children, would you also say 'no doubt your child drove her crazy! Not right what she did but I can understand her frustration'??? OP was asking for alittle support here and somehow became the bad guy?

Totally agree with your post BLUESTARS and that's why I come off angry here. I am angry! Dogs need their owners to protect them and if they're allowed to push other homeowners to the point of 'threats', something is WRONG! Poor dog!!! And horribly sorry to hear about your dog.

Well, lots of people are assuming lots of stuff on this thread. Everyone has their interpretation of the OP's statements and of what kind of dogs she has.
It's not funny that the OP's dog was poisoned but some of you all are pretty funny getting all worked up about who did what and how and where with whom and why and with what forethought. I actually like these runaway argument threads, especially on a cold and dreary day. Thanks!!!!:thumbsup2

I find that horrifying. My parents live on a 10 acre lot in the country and they see dogs roaming all day long. Their biggest worry is that one of them will be hit by a car. But they don't make it an issue with the neighbors. My folks aren't one to let their dogs roam (about 2 acres of their yard is fenced), but you can bet if someone in the neighborhood had complained about a roaming dog of theirs, they'd make a point of it to contain their dogs because they love them.

It's one thing to say that people shouldn't be so evil as to snap a dog's neck because that dog is on their property, but it's quite another to expect everyone to be civilized simply because most people are. The first and foremost protection for our beloved animals needs to come from us, not everyone else.

Well, lots of people are assuming lots of stuff on this thread. Everyone has their interpretation of the OP's statements and of what kind of dogs she has.
Probably because the OP made a very generic statement with few details and followed up with even more sketchy statements and details. I'm one of the few here who wondered if she wasn't a troll because of the low post count and the inflammitory post. That's the main reason I didn't bother to invest any emotion into my posts.

But I'm like that. I resist knee-jerk reactions and that makes me a hard target for trolls who want dramatic reactions to their statements. I'm immune to glurge emails, too. However, this one had me LMAO when I read it:

Amazing Story
In 1986, Peter Davies was on holiday in Kenya after graduating from University .

On a hike through the bush, he came across a young bull elephant standing with one leg raised in the air.

The elephant seemed distressed, so Peter approached it very carefully.

He got down on one knee, inspected the elephants foot, and found a large piece of wood deeply embedded in it.

As carefully and as gently as he could, Peter worked the wood out with his knife, after which the elephant gingerly put down its foot.

The elephant turned to face the man, and with a rather curious look on its face, stared at him for several tense moments.

Peter stood frozen, thinking of nothing else but being trampled.

Eventually the elephant trumpeted loudly, turned, and walked away.

Peter never forgot that elephant or the events of that day.

Twenty years later, Peter was walking through the Chicago Zoo with his teenage son.

As they approached the elephant enclosure, one of the creatures turned and walked over to near where Peter and his son Cameron were standing.

The large bull elephant stared at Peter, lifted its front foot off the ground, then put it down.

The elephant did that several times then trumpeted loudly, all the while staring at the man.

Remembering the encounter in 1986, Peter could not help wondering if this was the same elephant.

Peter summoned up his courage, climbed over the railing, and made his way into the enclosure.

He walked right up to the elephant and stared back in wonder.

The elephant trumpeted again, wrapped its trunk around one of Peter legs and slammed him against the railing, killing him instantly.

Probably wasn’t the same elephant.

This is for everyone who sends me those heart-warming stories.

Didn't the OP say the neighbor recieved a letter. The OP may very well keep her dog contained. The neighbor may just be finding Poop and assuming it is the OP or the other dog that was poisoned leaving it when it could be a stray or other irresponsible dog walker leaving it. MY neighbor has a pen in her fenced in back yard. Just because the dog was not put in a pen does not mean it was left loose to roam.

My nephew has an invisible fence you would think his dog is roaming free but it is always in his yard.

I would also say the neighbor is off her rocker.

OP make sure your check your yard throughly for any that could have poisoned the dog.

She has proper channels through animal control and the animal control lady agrees that she is suspicious.
It's truly regrettable that your dog was poisoned, but keep in mind that if this neighbor had the option of animal control, it indicates the dogs were unleashed, uncontrolled, and in an area (her yard) where they were not supposed to be.

I agree, poisoning the dogs was WRONG - but assuming she didn't come into your yard and poison your leashed/contained pet, it indicates a problem you should have resolved long before anything this drastic occurred.

op keeping your doggie in my prayers......

This sounds like complete bull, but I'll send a prayer out just in case.

::yes::

I know this may not be popular to some but I had a dog on the 8th floor of an apartment in NYC for 14 years and never had a yard. Can you even consider keeping the dog inside until the investigation is over? I couldn't sleep knowing that some nut was trying to kill my pet... :confused3

Eh, I wouldn't expect updates over the weekend. The OP said that the vet said the dog is going to be okay (I think, anyway), and probably there's no new news from the Sheriff's Department.

I found the side arguments of this thread on what constitutes "crazy" very amusing. :teeth:

I'm curious as to what kind of proof the OP has that she knows her neighbor poisoned the dog versus the dog accidentally ingesting something it shouldn't have. Like I said upthread, some dogs are like goats and will eat anything. I don't see how threatening to shoot dogs on her property equates sneaking into someone's backyard to feed their dog poison.

If someone wanted to poison Max and hid the toxin in something tasty, he'd eat the whole snack. There would never been be, say, half a pound of chop meat left with poison in it for the sheriff's office to chemically analyze. He'd chow down every bit of evidence. And I can't imagine most dogs wouldn't.

I hope the OP's doggie is OK. Her last two updates were a bit difficult to understand and didn't seem to make a lot of sense to me.

I don't usually post in threads like this but have no idea how you got that the OP was an irresponsible pet owner. Why should she have to pen them up in her back yard all the time. How is it irresponsible to let them wander loose in their own yard. As long as there are fences and they can't get into anyone else's yard, she is doing the right thing.
