My DL VIP tour experience versus WDW

My family and I took a VIP tour at DL last week. We have been lucky enough in the past to take several VIP tours at WDW. The VIP tour experience at DL was good, but not great like it is at WDW. My advice to anyone who might be in the position of choosing between doing one at DL or WDW would be to do the WDW one all the way.

My first disappointment at DL was entry into the park. At WDW the guide meets you at your hotel (either onsite or offsite, though there is a small added fee for the latter) and drives you in a nice car (car seats included) into a back entry in the parks. When you arrive in the back entry they scan your tickets (or these days MBs) with a hand held scanner and you're off to the races. At DL, my tour guide met me at the hotel but then we walked all through down town Disney to the park and had to line up at the regular bag check and turnstiles with everyone else. That was a total waste of 30 minutes of the tour. Had I known this was the case, I would have done that on my own time and met the guide in the park, I made the mistake of assuming that the entry would be expedited with the guide like it is at WDW.

Secondly, in comparison to WDW, there is SO LITTLE the DL VIP guides can get you access to. They have access to all FP rides plus a few extra rides that you can get in the exit. However, I heard more often that not "sorry, we don't have access to that". Some of the really fun rides at DL can't be gotten into (like Peter Pan). At WDW you are given access to essentially all rides. I can't think of a single ride we didn't get either FP or exit access to (and this was also prior to FP plus). In addition, you can get exit entry to character experiences at WDW, but not DL. Not to say that we didn't utilize our six hours effectively, but the minimum is 6 hours with the guide and honestly at the end of 6 hours we had ridden every single ride the guide had access to in both parks and seen one show. There was definitely no need for longer than 6 hours as there was really nothing left she could help us with, although many rides left that we would have liked to go on.

The VIP seating for the parade at WDW's MK is so much better than the VIP seating at DL parade. At DL it is on the second level of the train station at main street. The view is awesome but there is no interaction with the characters. At WDW the VIP seating for the parade is on benches on the bridge. The characters in the parade know you are in VIP seating, so they all come over and shake your hand, give you high fives, hand out things etc. It is a much more enriching experience than just a good view.

Finally, I just found the attitude to be different. At WDW when you call to make a reservation they have always been very open to "we will do whatever we can for you". At DL right from the word go it felt like "sorry, we can't do that for you", from both the booking girl and the guide herself. If there are limitations, there are limitations, however the price is the same at DL as it is at WDW and you definitely get a LOT more bang for your buck at WDW versus DL. I think the DL tour should be less expensive given how limited it is in comparison to the WDW one.

Just my 2 cents!

Thanks for the info.
I've done a few DL VIP tours and found them very worthwhile, and will look into A WDW tour for a trip next year.

I wonder why you were told no exit access to Peter Pan. On our trip at the end of April we did the Walk in Walt's Footsteps tour and we rode it via entering the exit with little to no wait.

Because it is part of the tour, but not on the plaid's approved list?

OP, thanks for this - we've taken a couple VIP Tours at DL and really enjoyed them. It's extremely interesting to have the contrast with WDW tours!

OP, like mentioned above, thank you for your comparison. I will be headed to WDW in a couple years. I think it would be ab advantage for us to try it there.

Interesting that they don't implement some of the advantages at DLR. I wonder what the rationale is.

Thank you for your input, Kemorr. You have a valid point that you are paying a lot of money for the VIP tour, and after your experience at WDW, it didn't measure up to your expectations.

From the other comments, it seems others who do not have WDW to compare to have enjoyed it. I took it with nine other people back in 2008, before they changed the criteria, and I thoroughly enjoyed it.

Does the VIP tour offer a brochure before you book it that gives the standard and optional offerings? That might help others in future bookings.

Maybe you could have done some research beforehand?

Ah, the inevitable snarky comment.

Even if I had known all I know now, I still would have taken the tour as it is still better than waiting in lines for 6 hours. I posted what I did to maybe help someone who was thinking of choosing between a VIP tour at WDW or DL. If they could only do one, they would definitely get a bigger bang for their buck at WDW. So while "research" wouldn't have helped me because I would have done it regardless, my post is to help others who are doing research. If I could only choose one, I would think my original post would help me make that decision, that was the point of the post. Also, I know some people might consider doing the DL VIP tour for more than one day (as I did, as that is what we do at WDW). I think my first post would help those people know that you can really get everything that they offer done in just one day (although if you wanted to see more shows you might need to extend it by an hour).

Maybe she did do research and didn't find much. A quick Google turned up next to nothing for me in comparisons and details. Personally I'm glad she posted this because now I know not to waste my money and time on a VIP tour in DLR…but I do know now that I will be seriously considering paying for one when we go to WDW in a few years.

Why do people feel the need to condescend and denigrate? This is a Disney board; let's keep the theme of the happiest place on earth here as well.

OP, thanks for your post. Never done either tour but am doing the DL one in August. Glad you mentioned that it's a waste of time to have them meet you at the hotel; I hadn't thought of that and will now plan to have them meet us inside the parks.

The website is woefully inadequate when it comes to giving any information at all about these particular tours. I even saw one place where it said the VIP guide should not be considered a FP. Really? Uh, gee, that's pretty much the whole point of doing one of these tours from what I've seen.

One question -- other than PP, what did you want to do that they were unable to help you out with?

Thanks!

First world problems. Surely the proper research could have been done. The DISBoards alone has enough information to cover virtually every topic. It seems as if the OP didn't ask probing questions to determine how similar it would be to the WDW experience and was then disappointed when it was different.

If I am spending a few hundred dollars an hour on something, I am asking questions beforehand to compare to my previous experience/expectations at a completely different theme park.

Due diligence.

You still completely fail to see the point of my post. <E>. Even if I had done more "due diligence" I still would have taken the tour. I just would have been disappointed earlier. I posted my post so OTHER people could get the info and let OTHERS know how they compare. More info would NOT have been a deciding factor in my choice.

I wonder why DLR can't up their game for the tour. Thoughts from any insiders?

They only have a small list of rides that don't have a FP that they can get exit entry to, maybe 5 per park. Most of Fantasy Land was not included. We had access to Snow White, Pinnochio, Matterhorn and Small World. My kids wanted to ride Pan, Dumbo, Toad, Storyland etc. Also, not having exit access to characters.

I think a big part of the issue is the relative lack of FP at DL compared to WDW. If they increased the FP access, the guide would have entry to more. I don 't know why there is such limited exit access at DL compared to WDW given their lower # of FP rides. My guide said we couldn't do the ones that weren't on her list because they were "too popular". Isn't that meant to be the point?
