Walt Disney: Dream Maker

Who comes to mind when you think of a great animator? If you’re like me, you would be thinking of Walter Elias Disney. Not only did he produce hundreds of shorts and movies, but he also was in voice work and ventured into the theme park industry (“Walt Disney”). He was a successful man in many fields during his lifetime, and continues to be successful, even after his death.

Walt Disney always had a way to add a certain touch to each of his works. One of those features was “Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs.” Not only was it the first full-length animated movie, it was the highest grossing movie at the time of its release for exactly one year (“Snow White”). It has been hailed as a classic for all generations by many, and continues to be a fan favorite.

However, not all of his movies were instant success stories. Upon their initial release, “Alice and Wonderland” and “Fantasia” were considered a failure by money standards, with the low intake the movies took at the box office. It wasn’t until the seventies that the two movies grew in popularity, because of their ‘trippy’ aspects (“IMDb Box Office Chart).

Walt also did a lot to contribute to the way movies are made, particularly animated movies. His most notable contribution would probably be his use of color animation. Other contributions include an intricate musical synchronization, the multi-plane camera, an in-depth perspectival backgrounds, and even animated special effects. (“Disney Family Museum” 1-3).

Walt also had many innovations with the way theme park attractions were made and operated. Walt was able to create a one-of-a-kind-type of attraction that blended technology with entertainment. He would not be happy with just a simple attraction. All of his ideas were fully drawn out and detailed down to the last stone. Not only was everything intricate in details, but each audio-animatronic would go through an extensive phase of planning, and the final products would be nearly flawless.

Walt wouldn’t build an attraction for just one age group, but he would build them for everyone to enjoy. Walt comments by saying:
To all who come to this happy place – welcome. Disneyland is your land. Here age relives fond memories of the past and here youth may savor the challenge and promise of the future. Disneyland is dedicated to the ideas, dreams and the hard facts that have created America… with the hope that it will be a source of joy and inspiration to all the world. (Jones 1)
Walt has also been quoted as saying that Disneyland wasn’t “made with the idea of money” (Jones 1).

When asked what people think is Walt’s biggest success in the film and short industry, the responses you get are mainly similar. Many people would say Mickey Mouse, Snow White, Pinocchio, Bambi, and even the Silly Symphonies. Many people that know me would know the answer I would give: Mickey Mouse. My review is not about the big cheese, but about a story involving mermaids, Indians, pirates, a fairy, and a boy who can fly: Peter Pan.

Although Walt was unhappy with the final product, I still enjoy this movie. It had been a while since I had seen this movie, so I forgot parts of the movie. The animation was really good, but faltered at points in the beginning. It wasn’t a major flaw, but it bugged me at first. The sound was really crisp and I could understand all of the conversations. Now, the actual movie was still entertaining to me, even though I had seen it a lot before. I consider it to be one of Walt’s best movies.

To finish, Walt Disney did a lot to further the way movies were made, produced some of the best known movies, and created a superstar. Saying Walt was amazing would be an understatement.

So, what does everyone think? Does everything look good and correct? Advice is appreciated.
