My DD was offered a teaching job! Update and a question on page 2

As far as housing, she may ask at her school if there are any other single teachers. When I finished school, it wasn't unusual for new teachers to share an apartment.

OP here posting an update.

It doesn't look like the job closer to home is going to pan out in time so DD will take the one offered.

Besides calling DD on Friday, so far the only other communication from the principal at the school has been a few emails. Just asking for basic info (name, address, birthdate, marital status, military status, SS#...) Most of this, but not all, was on the on-line application along with copies of her teaching license. She already has a current TB test and recent physical but they haven't set up time to do the fingerprinting and criminal background check. For the teachers out there, when do most districts have you sign a contract? Should DD be expecting to do that soon or is it closer to the start of school in August? I think that she's getting a little nervous since the jobs (she interviewed for one of three SpEd openings in that school) are still on-line.

Thanks!

They asked for her SSN in an email? Weird.

Around here its very common for the position to be filled in May but the posting on the Internet not removed for some time after that. And DH always gets his new contract in early August (school starts late August).

It looks like maybe the principal was asking for the information that the HR dept needs. DD did not email him her SS# as it's not secure. The principal understood that. She is getting it to him via a secured fax at the district office.

It seems like the consensus is that contracts are signed in Aug. We also start then, around the 22nd. I thought that maybe it would be sooner since she's a new employee.

I was a new hire as well and still signed in August. I actually worked there the previously year but as a private contracted employee - not a school district employee. I was basically just switching over. So even though they knew me, I still did not sign anything and went to a new hire orientation the week before school began.

That's interesting the principal asked for any of that info. Here, as far as I know since I am district based not school based, HR contacts you directly for that stuff, not the principal.

Congratulations to your daughter. We sign our new contracts in May every year. New hires usually get their contract after they are officially offered a job.

When I had taught in PA for 3 years, my husband got relocated with his job to NJ. I got 3 interviews and was offered one contracted position and immediately took it. Two weeks later, I was offered another position in another district that payed 3,000.00 more a year. That was a big difference in pay ... so, I called the first position (It was over the 4th of July weekend ... I can still remember dreading this phone call ...) and told them I wouldn't be taking their position. The principal was very nice and asked why ... and I told her the truth. She understood and found someone else.

I would encourage your DD to take the position and if another one is offered, switch. Teaching jobs are so hard to come by lately.

Don't worry about that part. Many places leave the job posting up until the person actually signs the contract or begins the job, depending on the field of employment. They do this to cover themselves in case the new hire doesn't end up actually taking the job. That way they can still collect resumes that they can turn to to re-start the interview process if they need to.
