and I don't think it's going to be easy!

Prom dress shopping is hard. I was lucky and went with a few friends first then I went with my best friend and my uncle Peter (aka Webmaster Pete) and he bought my dress for me. There were so many choices. I was glad that I didn't have my mom with me (that sounds horrible but I don't mean to be mean) I think if she had helped me there would have been bloodshed. I like to think that we get along so well now because she didn't help me pick out my prom dress 8 years ago :D

Does she have any ideas? Magazine clippings? Is she at least one of those off the rack sizes? I wasn't so it made it a bit harder.

Do you have a store called Group USA by your house? When i went prom shopping, thats the only store i ever went into...I must have tried onl ike 20 dresses..which just shows how much they had...so look for that store! if not, good luck

I'll be going prom dress shopping soon. What's worse, is that she already has the dress invisioned in her head. I hope, I really hope we either find it, or find something she likes as much.

Try Dillard's....they have beautiful dresses there!! :)

I loved shopping for my prom dress. I tried on EVERYTHING (including a $3,000 Nicole Miller that for some odd reason just didn't fit into my budget...hmmmm!) Tell her to try on things, even if they may not seem too great on the hanger. I actually wound up trying on a turqoise sequined gown on a dare, and fell in love with it (the price didn't fall in love with me, however).
The dress I eventually found was a stunning Black gown with a train (which my mother sewed into a small bunch in the back-really hard to explain!) it was a deep v-neck, and the back went into a very deep V plunge, above the train was an O shape cut out. The straps were rhinestones. It also had a split up the right side to the knee.
It was not at ALL what I had in mind, and I didn't think it was too great on the hanger, but once I put it on, I did not want to take it off!
Just tell her to be openminded and try on lots of stuff! You'll both have a great time!

Believe it or not my dd got both her prom dresses at Boscov's. Check your big department stores and see if they are having a prom fashion show. It should be soon and you can get some good ideas there, plus they have lots of prizes.

If she can't find what she really wants - why not have it made?

I had my prom dress made for my senior prom...it was a very 'unique' dress...and not one other girl had it on! :) I think the total cost of the dress was under $100 too...for fabric, the pattern and the seamstress.

Find a realiable seamstress - and you may be able to 1. save some money and 2. have an extremely unique gown!

if all else fails - check out www.jessicamcclintock.com I even bought my wedding gown here...very afordable IMO.

Tiggeroo,
I was just going to comment that my DD and I were in Boscov's over the weekend and they had beautiful prom gowns, starting at $59.00 and up to around $199.00.

DD got a hot pink beaded Alyce gown. It's strapless. This is her senior year and 4th prom and we never spend over $90.00 on a dress - until this year - she said she was saving up all of those years for a dazzling gown for her senior year and that's just what she did!!:D Last year we bought a brand new with tags, beaded buttercup yellow gown on eBay. The price tag was $200.00 - and we got it for $43.00. The bridal store had gone out of business and put its stock up for sale on eBay.

DD tried on one dress at Macy's - she loved it, but it didn't fit right. We then went to maybe 10 more stores and I think the kid tried on every prom dress in the mall. The next day we went back to Macy's and a wonderful salesperson offered to call another store to find the right size - she did - and the purchase was made. It was a beautiful dress and DD said she felt like Cinderella in it (it was her first prom, she was only a freshman going with a junior)!!!!!We still have a picture of her in that dress in the living room and she's 28 now!!!!

My DNiece was always able to find a cute dress at The Deb Shop. They are in mallls in my area(southwestern CT), but I don't know if they are a nationwide chain. She got both her Junior and Senior Prom gowns there, and they are fairly reasonable price-wise, too, as I recall.

I have also been on the Prom Dress hunt . But there is nothing like the feeling when they find " The Dress" She went into a shop alone and came and got me to drag me in to see it . When she came out of the dressing room I just stood there with tears rolling down my face. The lady that was helping her was by my side before the 1st tear made it all the way down. She handed me a tissue and then smiled and said " We get this alot don't feel bad" . That made me laugh but I still cried like a baby !
GOOD LUCK HAVE FUN !!!!!

I was always happy when my daughter wanted me to take her prom dress (and Homecoming too) shopping. She always tried on many, many dresses and always picked a beautiful one, and not "too expensive." One year she had her dress made though, and the lady even made a cute little drawstring purse to match.

Totally thought you were talking about wedding gown shopping.

I never put much stock in my prom dresses...I just wanted to find affordable/unique ones...that's why I had my senior prom one made. (that was actually my only "prom" gown...we had 2 "formal" dances besides that.)

I'll never forget when I WAS wedding gown shopping 2 years ago...made the biggest mistake of going during prom season...oh my word...some of the dresses those girls were trying on...my father wouldn't have let me out of the house in them.

A prom dress memory:

On the day of my senior prom I got called to the office at school. My date's mother was the school secretary - she had just called my mother to find out what color my dress was to order the flowers and my mother said - in tears - " I don't know I just burned a hole in her dress". My sweet mother was going to press my dress and the iron was too hot. The fabric totally melted and disintegrated - up too high for it to be cut off.

So I got an excused absence and got on the bus to find another dress for that night. We had NO money so that was the hardest part. I don't know how we came up with the money for a second dress. I'd saved babysitting money all year to pay for the first.

It makes me sad to remember how upset my mother was. My mother was a chronic worrier and not being able to provide for her children was a constant source of distress to her. I think the stress of her life contributed to her early demise.

With two DD's we'd make prom dress shopping an event.

We'd head to NJ and those great malls. We also didn't want to shop locally as to avoid having the same dress as every other girl.

It was a long, but fun day. Without fail, it seemed that after trying on every dress in every store, we'd end up going back and getting the first dress. :teeth: If you have a Jessica McClintock store, they always have a great selection.

Here's a tip, a lot of stores will hold the dress for you while you look elsewhere. It takes the pressure off when you're not 100% certain if it's the dress you want.

Or...........you can come and look in our closets. I think that we have 6 or 7 dresses from the various proms they went to.

:wizard: Wishing you much luck!

Having 3 grown daughters, this thread brings back many happy memories of prom, etc. excitement! We'd search for weeks, even traveling to other states..LOL, trying to fine 'the dress'. It was a special mom and daughter time we enjoyed and looked forward too, which sometimes even incl. dad!! Enjoy making those special memories, time passes all too quickly. :goodvibes

arminnie ~ what a sad story ~ glad it worked out!

Jessica McClintock is nationwide though, if I do recall. My friend bought her dress down in Florida, and wound up having the same dress as a girl at the prom anyway (in NY!).

I went to four proms, and now that I'm in college I'm terribly upset that i can't go dress shopping. My friends and I used to try on dresses for the fun of it. I never had problems finding a dress, but then again, I started shopping in February for them, lol.

Hope she has a great time.

LOL, this sounds like our house! Ashli has several prom dresses that she's never worn plus the ones she has worn. She needed a prom dress for a formal she attended in February and ended up borrowing one from a friend because she didn't have a date to this formal and didn't want to waste a special dress she's been saving on a dateless event, lol.
