She mouthed off to me about not having any shirts because I wouldn't wash clothes (she has plenty of shirts), so I introduced her to the joys of laundry (she's almost 12). She struggled through running the washer and dryer with only moderate miserableness, but the straw that broke the camel's back was when I pointed out that the clean clothes needed to be folded. :teeth:

I can't wait to teach her how to clean the bathroom. :teeth:

you should have just ruined her favorite shirt. :p

my mom did that when i was 15 and i have been doing my own laundry ever since. LOL

Good mommy, Laura! :teeth:

Caity, I never would have thought of that.

My oldest does her laundry because she never remembers to put them in the laundry room and I am afraid to go into her room. I'd never find my way out.

good for you
I think this is a lesson some of us learned too late in life
appreciate your mother and all she does for you

Everyone needs to learn the natural consequences of their actions (or in this case, words!) I'll bet you'll hear no complaints about what you're making for dinner !!!! ;)

ROTFLOL!!

Good one--I'll have to remember it!

Hey Suite my dd is almost 12 too, in April.

Yes what a good time it is! Folding laundry is one of dds specialities!

I tought my son how to clean the bathroom when he was 6 :) It helped with his aim ;)

I love reading these threads. With dd's 7 and almost 5, I'm going to need all the ideas I can get!

DD -7 told me the other day that when she grows up she's going to clean house better than me! I told her it was time to start practicing now! Hence, I now have a chore list for her and youngest dd to follow! Stay tuned!:p ;) :jester:

She'll live. 12 is a good time to teach them to do their own laundry. I haven't done it for my girls in years. In fact sometimes I ask them to do mine. This last summer when I was stuck in bed or in a wheelchair with my leg all busted up it proved invaluable. I couldn't do anyone's laundry and they took it over.

And I thought that having my DD almost 12 make her bed every day and empty the dishwaser when needed which lately is every day... and I thought that was good but reading this maybe I should teach her to do laundry too..

Although I can't seem to get DS 14yrs to do a damn thing.............I am lucky if the bed gets made. Any tips to get the boys to do more around the house.......

Tammie

LOL!!
Recently my 9 yr old son told me to stop treating him like a little kid, he said he was all grown. I said, well then you wont have any problems doing chores like your big sisters. The look on his face was priceless and 6 months later he still does daily chores.

I was doig my own laundry at 11-12. I also made beds, dishwasher, and saved my own money.

I can't say it enough, amke the kids do more! My Mom took care of everything when I was growing up, she did all the cleaning, laundry etc. Was I clueless when it was time for me to be on my own!

My DBs are even more clueless!!!!

Definately have the kids do laundry. They can do towels, sheets and other things that are hard to 'harm' as they get started. ANd then move on to more delicate clothing

And for your son, Tammie, your future DIL will thank you if you make him pull his weight. He should know how to do every aspevt of house work before he leaves home. My DH knew how to take care of everything and let me tell you, I am so lucky!

Well my DH even learned while we were dating not to complain about the way I iron. He does all his own ironing.

DS 17 has been doing his own ironing since he was about 12 and DS #2 12 is learning how. They want their T-shirts ironed so they do it. DS #2 is excellent at cleaning the bathroom - he really can make it sparkle.

I told DS #1 he can start doing his own laundry too because he was complaining that I shrunk one of his sweaters. He called me yesterday while I was at his brother's basketball game to hurry and come home because he needed his soccer uniform washed:rolleyes:

When my DS was 8 or so, he asked one day if he could learn how to do the laundry. He got his lesson, and did his own for about 2 weeks, then says, Mom, can you do my laundry? The answer was then and always remained, you know how to do it, I don't need to. He has had to do it since then, and he's 25 now. I agree, all children need to learn how to cook, clean, iron, balance a check book, change a flat tire, etc. Who will do it when (or if) they get out on their own?
