My comparison of food cost versus basic dining plan

Prior to this trip, I've purchased the basic dining plan. When tallying up my receipts from our August 2010 trip, I found we just barely broke even. So I decided to forgo the DDP this trip and pay out of pocket. The basic DDP would have cost DD8 and I ~$660 for our 10 night trip.

I purchased $700 in Disney gift cards to use towards our dining, but sometimes I was putting food on our room charge or on a credit card (e.g. when we ordered pizza from off-site). I kept all receipts and entered them on a spreadsheet. When comparing the costs, I removed items that I would have had to pay OOP for anyway, namely alcoholic drinks I ordered and the glow character punch that DD ordered. I also excluded tips, since those would have been OOP anyway. But I did include food that we had from non-WDW restaurants, i.e. the pizza we ordered from Papa Johns, because if we'd been on the DDP, I would have made us use those credits and gotten food from WDW restaurants.

Our total food cost, excluding items that I would have had to pay OOP for, was $630.44. So we saved $30 by paying OOP. But what was even better was the freedom that paying OOP allowed us. DD didn't always want something from the Kid Menu. Since we weren't on the DDP, DD could order whatever she wanted. Her meals were more expensive than if she'd ordered off the Kid Menu, but she liked the food better and was much more likely to eat it.

Another bonus was that I didn't feel any pressure to order the most expensive things on the menu just because I wanted to "get my money's worth" out of the dining plan. On the flip side, I promised myself that if I did want the most expensive item on the menu, I wasn't going to deny myself just because of the cost. So at LeCellier, I ordered the filet instead of looking for a less expensive option. But at Whispering Canyon, I ordered the less expensive pasta because I just didn't feel like eating steak that night. And that one night when DD was craving Papa John's pizza, we called them up and ordered it rather than feeling we had to stick with WDW restaurants because of the dining plan.

I don't think I'll ever purchase the dining plan again. I really enjoyed the flexibility we had, and saving a little money was great.

Can I ask you how you ate? I am taking my DD and we currently have the DDP. I can't make up my mind if I should keep it or not. We do like a TS every day, and have booked several character meals.

So, did you have many TS meals? Did you do any buffets/character dining?

Obviously, it would be just as easy for me to buy a Disney GC with the amount we would have spent on the dining plan as it is to pay Disney for the DDP - if its worth it.

If you find you "break even" at minimum, I feel even better about purchasing the plan. I love that when I get to WDW, everything has already been paid for and really if we don't want to we don't have to spend one single cent more.

So, thanks for doing this evaluation -- from the opposite perspective! ;)

I've done similar spreadsheets as well comparing what I think I would order off a menu etc. I compare the DDP also to the Table in Wonderland card (discount card for a fee offered to FL, AP, and DVC peeps.) The DDP never seems to win out. I also wish that it included everything (tax and gratuity) so I didn't have to shell out any extra money while at a restaurant. I think that would make it more attractive to me. It would feel more like being on a cruise or all inclusive resort.

The first time my husband and I went to WDW we got the QS dining plan and I think we pretty much wasted our money because of all of the food we wasted. I hated throwing away side items and/or desserts because we knew we wouldn't eat them. We def saved a lot of money on our second trip by not getting a dining plan. We even ate at two table restaurants. We don't eat much so it's a total waste for us to get it. We now bring our own snacks and breakfasts to eat as well as a water bottle to refill with water as needed. We save a lot of money this way.

We did 6 TS meals: LTT lunch, Whispering Canyon dinner, Ohana dinner, LeCellier lunch, Crystal Palace breakfast, and Akershus breakfast. That was another reason I didn't want the basic dining plan. I didn't want to do 10 TS meals this trip. I didn't factor cost in when picking my ADRs. I picked what restaurants and what meals based on what worked best for our park schedule. I really wanted a more flexible trip where I wasn't locked into meal times as much. Paying OOP worked beautifully for that.
