My cat WILL NOT stop climbing up our Christmas Tree!!!!

We also have a kitty. I bought a spray that's used for training purposes to train cats and dogs to stay away from a particular spot. I sprayed around the bottom of the tree one time and it has worked perfectly! :cool1:

Thank you for all the laughs about your cats. I'm laughing so hard I'm crying but I know I might be in this situation with my brother if he comes down with his tomcat. My teacup poodle isn't a cat person at all but she leaves the tree alone, now if I just could get dad to stop messing with it.

Isn't it strange? I don't think I've ever seen a cat in an evergreen tree outside. Too scratchy & pokey. And the branches are too densely clumped together. What is it about the trees being indoors that makes them go so crazy?

They have destoryed the tree...I took all the breakables off it last night and I'm going to take the tree down this weekend and throw it away since they have killed it.....oh well...it is a funny picture!!!

P.S. there are actually 2 cats in that picture...one is a tabby and is hiding on the backside of the tree...

I know what you are going through, not only do I have 4 cats ages 5,5,3 &1. I have 3 puppies ages 1,1 ands 11 months. My dog ate my strand of lights right in the middle of the tree, yeah right smack in the middle where I had to take the whole tree down and do it again. So now I have my coffee table in front of it when the girls are in the house, my 1 year old cat likes to sleep on a lower branch, but i use the can with coins, he hates it, best of luck.

We've tried spraying him with a water bottle, but he loves it. Not sure what else to do. Especially since the tree is in a room that can't really be closed off...

I think your kitty must be the twin of my kitty, Sydney...she plays in the water bowl, toilet, and running shower...loves the spray bottle too!

Don't get me started about the poor tree...

:rolleyes1

Great pic! The kitty looks quite happy there. :rotfl:
You might as well keep that tree up as the "Cats' tree" since you have it and put up a "Human tree" elsewhere & maybe they will stay away from that one since they have their own. ;)

I'm surprised you put up tinsel though. Cats are notorious for chewing & choking on tinsel. Keep an eye out for that. (OK, PSA over. :) )

MichelleVW, that cat in the tree picture is so funny. Thanks for sharing. Kitty looks SO content there!!

Take more pic's first. Put little Santa hats on the cats too....:rotfl2: Oh and some jingle bells for a festive touch.

Ok, here's kitty number 2 who can't be left out of the fun!!! I got these two in late May when they were only about 6 weeks old and they are best buds and must always be together!!!

Thanks for the tinsel warning...I didn't know about it, and honestly I hate the stuff...that was left over from 2 years ago when I put it up last!!

The only problem with the idea of a "cat's tree" and a "human's tree" is that if they're anything like mine, they'll instantly leave the "cat's tree" alone and make a beeline for the "human's tree". After all, it's no fun if you're allowed to do something/be somewhere. At least when I put up the tree, I'll know I'm not alone in having a tree my cats won't leave alone. The question will be not IF it gets knocked over, but HOW LONG before it gets knocked over.

You could always use the cat pictures as your christmas cards.

You know I was wondering what to use for my Christmas cards this year and that picture of Charlie in the tree is in the running for sure!!!!

These stories remind me of the first Christmas we had my cat, Simon. It was way back in '85, and Simon (named for the lead singer in Duran Duran for all you '80's folks... :teeth: ) was about 8 months old. We put up our tree and dad anchored it to the walls as usual, and we all got down to decorating it. That night we sat in the living room with the lights off and the tree lights on, listening to Christmas music and enjoying the sight of our lovely, fragrant, slightly swaying tree. Slightly swaying?!! My brother said something first. "Does it look like the tree is moving to anyone else?" Mom said "I thought it was just because I'm so tired!" Dad said "I know I anchored it solidly to the walls!" And I shouted "Simon!!" just as the little black and white fuzzy kitten popped his head out of the top branches, just under the angel and meowed. Pandemonium ensued as mom started shrieking "get him out of there before he hurts himself!" and dad started scolding "Simon, bad cat! Simon, no!" as my brother fell over laughing.

That was not the last time Simon climed the tree. I was walking past it once with a plate of cookies when a little paw shot out and batted at me. I jumped, screamed, and dropped the cookies. Simon retreated farther into the tree, and when I parted the branches I saw him happily perched inside the tree, purring at me. I still laugh thinking about it! Simon had a long life - he died in 2005 at age 20 after living in 8 houses in 4 states and with 6 other cats and 4 dogs. He outlived all the dogs and 3 of the other cats - and most were younger than he was!

MichelleVW those pictures are priceless!!! Definitely a Christmas card in the making.

I love hearing all these stories...it's making me feel so much better! Our update from my original post - Cooper (who also is a orange tabby, go figure!) is still at it. Nothing works...I've even thrown wet balled up paper towels at him, and he's still unaffected. Murphy, our older cat, who never took interest in the tree before, is now seeing how much fun Cooper is having, and of course, is deciding to join in. Fortunately for us, he just likes to flatten down the bottom branches and sleep on them.

While my DH is still fighting the fight, I have just resolved to the fact that we have two kitties in the house, and they have found a new toy. It's actually humorous at times...Cooper knows he's not to go near the tree, but he acts all "incognito" when he does it.

I will try to take pictures if I can catch them. My digital camera is breaking down, and I need to get a new one, so the delay on the picture is REALLY slow, and it's been hard to catch the right shots. If I manage to get one, I'll have to post it...

We should keep this thread going - I'd love to see all the pics of the naughty kitties out there!!

Timmy (the grey tabby in the second picture) looks like an evil kitty in the picture, but he's the sweetest cat I've ever met!! Both of them are really sweet and love to snuggle but Charlie (orange kitty) gets into much more trouble than Timmy does...I got lucky when I got these two, I didn't even pick them out...a friend of mine knew someone that had kittens and I said "pick me out 2 cute ones!! They were supossed to be barn cats, but they haven't set foot out of the house since I got them! :rotfl:

I would love to see other "cat in tree" pictures too...I'm sure my two wild little boys can't be the only ones!!!

Thanks for all the tips. I am dreading putting up a tree this year. We got two of our cats on Xmas eve last year and they hid under the bed for a week, so the tree was down before they ever got near it. But this year we also have a 5 mos old kitten and she gets the other two wild and they are all over everything! I usually use the water, but might have to try the cayenne pepper or lock them in another room when we are sleeping or gone for the day!

Reminds me of my kitty 20 years ago. After working all night, I came home to find every single ball missing from my 5 foot tree. I seriously thought that a burglar came in and just stole my ornaments. Later, I found every one of them under my sofa. I wish I had a hidden camera - I can only imagine how funny it must have been for him to go after each one of the balls, knock it off of the tree, then play with it until it went under the sofa. :lmao:
