My Cat keeps using the bath mat as a litter box

My cat has recently started peeing on any clothing that I leave on the bathroom floor. I have to make sure that I dont leave even a towel on the floor.

The post is old, so I hope I'm not bothering you guys. Because cat learns to use the litter box from its mother. There is a chance that he/she won't know how to use it if being separated from the mother too soon. So when your cat doesn't want to use its litter box, there are a few things you could try. First is to change the box, it could be the size or shape of the box that makes your cat dislike it. Second, consider using a different type of litter might solve the problem. Litters with attractive smells will tend to work better. If you had tried both and none of them worked, here is another method which could be helpful. Use a rag (or the bath mat that your cat peed in) to clean the urine and poop of your cat. Then place the rag into the litter box. Your cat will notice a familiar smell and come to the box.

Some cats just do this, there isn't anything that will stop them. We had one that would pee on anything fabric left on the floor - bath rugs, throw rugs, clothes, towels, anything. Thankfully we didn't have wall to wall carpet. The boxes were clean, she used them so it wasn't a litter issues. There was just something about the texture I guess that made her do it. Like previous posters have said, either get rid of the rugs all together or hang them up when not in use.

okay, here's one for you all. How do you get a cat to stop peeing on your pillows and your comforter? I'm just a little more than over this...
I"m guessing he's been checked by the vet? Is this new behaviour? A vet once told me that when cats start doing this all of a sudden there is something wrong.

Otherwise, is there something new in the house that might be upsetting him - dog, baby, new cat, new furniture?

Does he use his litterbox at all? If not then try moving it to a quieter location, try new litter (there is a brand called cat attract, I think the big box stores sell it, it's supposed to attract the cat to the litterbox if they are hesitant to use it), try a different box, try adding a box in addition to the current one.

I had problems with my cat, switched to Cat Attract litter. It’s expensive but works for her.

I have had cats for many years & many different cats over the years. I’ve had a few like this & nothing helped except picking up anything they can use. I used to have a cat that would pee on any article of clothing or towels or anything left on the floor. He never did it on furniture or anything permanent in the house. I tried everything & the only thing that worked was being meticulous about not leaving anything on the floor. But, I also didn’t have kids at the time so that was easy to do.
