Butter had his teeth cleaned a week and a half ago and ever since then he has not been the same cat. The vet did tell me that when they were putting the tube in him with the anesthetic that they punctured a small hole in his trachea but it should heal quickly. I didn't think anything of it except since last Monday Butter hadn't eaten maybe a total of a can of food. I took him in last Friday night to have the vet look at him and got some appetite enhancer pills to try and enhance his appetite. It didn't seem to be working well and his breathing got very labored. Well yesterday the vet asked me to call him with an update and I did. Butter hadn't drank any water since the 27th so Sunday night we tried milk. He drank that and drank some more yesterday morning but wanted nothing to do with it last night and wanted nothing to do with his food this morning.
So as instructed by the vet yesterday I called him as soon as they opened this morning and they told me to bring him in so they could watch him. I, with alot of strain, got him into the car (we have never had a carrier for our cats and didn't for him but he's never been a problem before). For the first time in 12 years he hissed and started to go at me. I literally threw him on the front seat, the whole time hoping he wasn't going to have a heart attack. By the time I got the vet (a 15 minute drive) he was very labored with his breathing, which he had gotten, and just was limp. But when I got him out of the car he again was fighting. Vet called to tell me that they lost him and told me by the time the assistant picked him up and took him back to the room - he was literally blue in color. They put a cathater and a breathing tube in him and by that time he turned purple - literally. They got him breathing again and took him back for a chest xray and he turned blue again, did some CPR (I know there are alot of animal lovers here but I just cannot fathom giving an animal CPR - I'm sorry) and then he just wasn't responding.
We are going to do an autopsy to see if there was something else (a year ago they said they heard a heart murmur so they weren't sure if his heart was going or what). Now I have the awful job of telling my daughter. Many years ago when I was having problems with my ex-husband, she got very upset and hoped that Butter would never die. Last night I talked to her and told her that if he didn't get better by this weekend that we might have to have him put down. She was okay with that and said that she agreed because this was not a good quality of life for him. I am glad that we didn't have to make that decision about having to have him put down. Another wonder of God for those that believe!!!!
Thanks - I just needed to ramble and get my thoughts together before telling dd tonight!
I put this on page 3 and decided to put it here...a pic I took this past summer as I was working on the landscaping in our yard - he loved having his pic taken!
