I can so relate. A month ago, we were peacefully driving home from vacation when the "oil pressure" light came on our van. Before I could get to the next exit, the vehicle started making a horrible noise and totally quit. We had to spend the night in a hotel and had our van brought home at a cost of $300. We had had absolutely no warning that anything was wrong with the car and had had in serviced just a week before. The engine was destroyed. Repair was $2,100 plus -- and that was for a used engine. When I was following the
AAA tow truck over to the repair shop in our third car (claimed by our teen with a learner's permit), that car started making a funny noise. So while the van was being fixed, we also had $600 of work on that car. And my dh's Toyota is having 90,000-mile maintenance this week.
I work 25 hours a week and have done some freelance work for 20 years. I had been lax about replacing a client I lost over a year ago, but this was a big wake-up call and I was making phone calls looking for work practically the minute we got home. I worked virtually all weekend b/c I have immediate work with two freelance clients. I HATE coming home and going to work, but VISA has got to be paid!
chager -- Your insurance on one car may go up $100, but certainly your entire insurance bill will go down if you drop a car!
minniepumpernickel -- Transmissions CAN be replaced, but it's an expensive repair. Sometimes it makes sense to do it, though.
