Finally heard from my brother and his girlfriend late last night.. He called me on his cell phone - they're back in Vero Beach (had evacuated to Port St. Lucie) - and they feel very, very fortunate.. The house held up well - a bit of water damage and the ceiling came down in the computer room after rain got in where some of the roof tiles blew away..
His sail boat is fine (was on a trailer on land) but his yacht didn't fair so well as it was moored at a marina.. Still, he said it held up well considering the pounding it got and can be repaired.. They drove through Ft. Pierce and said the boats up there were basically a bunch of splinters in many of the marinas.. They feel extremely lucky and are very concerned about others who didn't do so well.. They still don't have phones or electricity, but they're alive and still have their home, so they're very thankful..
My neighbors up here who have the home in the Cascades in Port St. Lucie finally heard from their house sitter yesterday.. Things are pretty good there too.. A bit of water got in, some roof tiles are gone, all of their palm trees came down and the fresh landscaping they had done within the past year and a half is totally trashed.. Still - they are thankful because at least they have their home to return to when they leave here (NY) on Thursday morning..
What a nerve-wracking weekend! Still waiting to hear from 2 other family members (in Apopka and Daytona Beach) but I'm going with that old saying that "No news is good news.." I'm hoping that if anyone was injured or totally displaced we would have heard about it by now..
NO MORE HURRICANES FOR FLORIDA!!! They have been through enough down there..
