He got his doctorate in Nuclear Bio-Physics from Columbia University on Wednesday. :woohoo: I am proud of him even though I have no idea what he does or says about his dissertation. We are having a party tomorrow and I have no idea what to get him as a gift. I am hoping for some suggestions. :confused3 He is the first person in the family to earn a doctorate so it is new for us. Thanks for any help.

Congratulations to him!

I hope you get some ideas for a present - I don't have any suggestions.

Holy smokes, no present will ever top this accomplishment!

Give him a heartfelt hug, telling him how proud you are of him. That should be present enough!

Congratulations to him! My daughter is a double major in biology and physics with a minor in math - we lovingly refer to her as our house geek. I just asked her for a suggestion for a gift, and she laughed and said "a life?" Yes, it takes a lot of studying and long hours in a lab.......

disney tickets? after all that hard work, he NEEDS a vacation! wow, congrats to him! my SIL and her DH have PhDs in chemistry, so i know the kind of time your brother has put into his degree!

Congratulations to him!!! My uncle got his doctorate in a field very similar and we still have no idea what he does. We know he's a scientist. LOL Sorry I'm at a loss for gift ideas too.:confused3 Good luck.

That's wonderful news! Congratulations to him.

As for a present, what about something that he enjoys now that he will have time to relax. Home plate club tickets if he's a baseball fan or similar tickets if he's a football fan. A weekend at the beach, or dinner at a restaurant he likes.

Congratulations to your brother! I would suggest a frame from Columbia University for his doctorate. They are usually for sale in the school gift shop and online for around $150. It is something he probably wouldn't buy for himself but appreciate so much.

Thank you all for the suggestions and the congratulations for him. I do not understand what he does but I am extremely proud of him. He truly is my baby brother as I am 22 years older than he is. He has been working on this for so long and one professor gave him such a hard time about little things that it took an extra year. I know this is such a huge accomplishment for him now I just hope he can find a job in his field.

Congratulations!!!!

Thats a great accomplishment!!!

My DS starts Columbia next month for his undergraduate for the next 4 years and he is so excited!!!

Good luck to your son. I have visited the campus and really enjoyed the area. NY is a fun city to visit. My brother has loved the time he spent there.

Thank you all for the well wishes. We had his party today and had so much fun sharing in his accomplishment.

Congratulations to your DB ~ bet he enjoyed his fun celebration :goodvibes! Best wishes that his hard work and accomlishment bring much success. :thumbsup2

I wouldn't get something like this- if its a party then I bet 5 other people have the same idea and he will end up with a bunch of frames- sort of like giving a bible or cross for a christening!
I would just do a nice sized Visa gift card and if he truly wants a frame and doesn't get one then he can purchase it with the gift card.

Last year, my brother got a master's degree in systems engineering from U Penn. My family chipped in and bought him a Wii. It was just something fun after all that studying and hard work. :)

When I finished my JD, my dad bought me a guitar. Otherwise, most people just gave me cash. I enjoyed the party the most though. It was nice to have family and friends around to celebrate.
