 :scratchin I have a studio reserved for my BIL and now he does not know if he can go. What can I do--I really do not want these points to go in holding. Can I change the name on the reservation if someone else can go? Can I offer it on the trade and rent board? I just don't know what I can do. Thanks in advance.

If you made the reservation you can change the names on the reservation by calling MS.

And yes, you can go the rent/trade route but if you're within 30 days already that doesn't leave much time to find someone for whom your dates and accommodation size and resort line up perfectly.

And you can now officially join the "burned by relatives" threads that pop up regularly on these boards about people who don't understand that cancelling a DVC reservation isn't like cancelling a hotel reservation.

I think you will have good luck if you want to rent them. There seems to be a lot of demand on the rent/trade board for that timeframe. There are also lots of people stuck on the waitlist and not coming off.

Good luck!

Right now DVC rooms are in high demand and most resorts are booked due to the holidays coming up.

You might even find someone to just transfer their points into your account in exchange for your ressie.hen you could just put it in their name.

Good luck.

I think that you won't have a problem renting out your reservation. I'm sorry you BIL is being a putz. If I were you, he would never be asked to go to WDW again.

oh yes been there and done that.

in your ad mention that you are only going to wait a week or 10 days then you will cancel. People will get back to your faster if they know you will cancel if you don't heard quickly.

because of relativies I have several times points in holding - don't worry you can do it - promise!!!!

I also want to say that renting points in that are in holding is not the end of the world either. A lot of people want a reservation at the last minute. As long as your use year in at least 6 months away you should be able to find something for someone. For instance, I just rented to someone for January, 2007.

BUT it would be best to rent your current reservation. This time of year is particularly busy between the MNSSHP, F&W festival and Thanksgiving. If might be interesting if you called member services to find out availably at your resort and others for your dates. If DVC or your resort is sold out, then I would put that in your Subject. People will then come to you for those dates instead of trying someone else.

Good luck!

How many times have we seen posts like this? What is it with family members? Why do they so often take advantage of their relatives' generosity? It really is annoying. :sad2:

I agree with Granny:
people who don't understand that cancelling a DVC reservation isn't like cancelling a hotel reservation.

Many (not all) folks don't understand the difference in cancellation policies. Others just don't get the whole timeshare reservation process in general.

Mainly just posting to express my sympathy.

FWIW, I think you should tell your brother in law that his reservation cost you $ (fill in something suitable). Not that you expect him to pay, but you want him to understand why he will never be invited as your guest again. (That assumes that you told him he needed to cancel at least 31 days in advance or you would lose money). If this is your husband's relative, he should tell him.

Hope you can rent it at the last minute of find someone else to invite.

Best wishes -

Thanks for all the advice I did list them on the rent board. If they don't get taken and go into holding what happens then. My use year is Oct. Thanks again--I love the disney boards everyone is so supportive and informative. :thumbsup2 :grouphug: :yay:

I hope no one flames me for this but ...

I avoid this problem by charging relatives something. We purchased a year ago and the points were relatively high, so they know we are still paying it off (figuratively, because our break even won't be for a few years and we've explained that). They know they can cancel, but if I can't bank the points or rent them, they don't get the money back. I have made that very clear.

It's unfortunate, but only by taking a little collateral from people do you sometimes get them to understand. ;)

If they go into the holding account, they can only be used to make a reservation for a stay that occurs 60 days or less from the date you call to make the reservation. Since availability is often quite limited 60 days prior, holding points can be difficult to use. If they are not used prior to the end of your use year (9/30/2007), they expire and are lost to you. Holding points cannot be banked.

You might consider using them for one of the non-DVC options where availability is better - Some in this position have used their holding points for one special night(s) at the GF or AKL COnceirge or etc. If you decide to do that, read the info about the 60 day rule on page 64 of the new planner.

Good luck!

I agree that the late cancellations are less likely if the guests have some of their own money i"int he game". I don't charge, but I since I make plans 11 months in advance, I "make" (OK help) my guests make non-refundable airline reservations early in the planning period. So far, none of our guests have cancelled, and the ones that were considering it had a wonderful time. They have come twice since.

Best wishes -

Carol,

That's also a terrific idea! :thumbsup2

No advice, but my heart goes out to you! I hope you get those points rented soon!

Exactly. I'm trying to give away FREE, FREE!, bookcases and no one will come take them. I think I'm going to have to post them for sale for a small fee just to get rid of them, lol.

If people don't have to pay something, they just don't attach any value and it doesn't seem important enough for them to go through with their agreement.

We don't get to pick our relatives! :rotfl2:

Depending on when the ressie is, you may not have trouble renting it.

You said he's thinking of cancelling. If you don't rent it comfortably ahead of the 31 day timeline, I'd think for him.
