Muslim CM sues Disney

The sad part is she appears to be little more than a puppet for her union. According to other reports, she has been a Cast Member for 2 1/2 years and now this is suddenly and issue. Coincidentally the DL union has been without a labor contract for over 2 years and every few months they pull some cheap publicity stunt out of their hats.

One report included this comment:

After today's press conference, which will also be attended by representatives of the Greater LA office of the Council on American-Islamic Relations, reporters are invited to bring cameras and follow Boudlal as she attempts to report for her scheduled shift at Storytellers Cafe.

It doesn't appear she has any chance of winning a lawsuit since employers have every right to dictate employee appearance standards. When this is over she isn't going to have anything to show for it and the union will move on to its next cheap stunt.

what makes you think its the DL union behind this? seems from what I read that its more likely these Council on American-Islamic Relations guys that have pushed her into it as they're the ones tagging along with her. :confused3

Whoever is behind it--it's still a publicity stunt.
Sadly, the media will fall for it and attempt to get everyone to feel "sorry" for her.

I'm betting because of the current intolerant climate in the US these days no one will feel sorry for her.

I am one all for freedom of speech, religion and everything else our brilliant forefathers deemed necessary and probably even more but cases like this are just ridiculous. She's been there for 2.5 years without incident? she refuse behind the scenes jobs ... I think she was just biding her time waiting for the chance to cause trouble, but regardless of what I think Disney has and always had their rules about dress and appearance. She shouldn't have taken the job, just like all of the kids with long hair in the 60's and 70's, if she didn't want to obey the simple rules of employment.

I am a CM and she has no case she should have read the fine print. Disney parks are private property she does not have a right to wear it. I don't care what her religon is I wouldn't allow it either but I also wouldn't allow a yamaca or a cross to be worn.

How is this any different than a male Muslim deciding that he needed to grow a beard and still be on stage at a Disney park? Won't happen and it shouldn't happen. Disney is a PRIVATE company, they are offering her a position at the same pay rate where she can still wear her head covering. Still, it's in California so she'll probably win.

I see no intolerance anywhere except from the CM in question; she is being very intolerant of her employer's workplace standards. If they are that offensive to her, she is free to leave. She should be thankful that she lives in a country where she isn't stoned for not wearing a headcovering like some of the countries that practice her religion (who will not have a pavillion in World Showcase anytime soon).

Yup that is what is wrong with this country we cater to the minority and ignore the overwhelming majority.

I read the OC register version of this story yesterday. I figure something or someone has gotten to her and inspiried her to push the boundry. Cleary, she doesn't have a case--she agreed to where the costume and abide by the dress code. It is a worldwide backlash that has me concerned. Facts tend to get distored in cases like this.

What bothers me is that she was fine not to wear it for the longest time. Now, all of a sudden, she wants to wear it in observance of Ramaddan???? If wearing it is a part of her religious beliefs and she believes so strongly that she must wear it, why not ask to wear it all of the time? Why is she selectively wearing the head attire? Regardless of what her Disney contract says, I don't see that she has a legal leg to stand on. I agree with the PPs that there is more going on (publicity, unions, something). Unfortunately, someone selected Disney to make their point. It gets rather tiring.

I still think the press will make this out to be the most discriminatory of things--poor girl persecuted for her deeply held religious beliefs while simply trying to earn a living.
Horrible!
Horrible!!
HORRIBLE!!!!!!

Only because she is a Muslim! If she were a Christian or Jew the media would care less. The poor Muslim is how they view it and they look down on anything else.

IT IS A FREAKING CHRISTMAN TREE NOT A HOLIDAY TREE.

Just watched an interview on CNN with the employee. My impression is that she's after some money. Disney is trying to accomodate her wishes to wear a headscarf. I think this stunt will backfire, especially in the current climate.

If she had a real complaint, I think most people would support her. However, it seems like a ploy, and she could hardly stop smirking through the interview. People know when they're being played.

According to the Associated Press, Imane Boudlal, 26, a Morocco-born U.S. citizen, was fitted earlier this summer for a Disney-supplied headscarf but wasn't given a date for completion of the garment and was told she couldn't wear her own hijab in the interim. When she wore a headscarf to work at the Storytellers Cafe Sunday in observance of Ramadan, her supervisors told her to remove it, work where customers couldn't see her, or go home.
-this seems to say that she was told already her's was a no-go, which just makes her argument weaker.

I mean, I'm all about individuality and I quite frankly can't say how her wearing her hijab was effecting her work. I feel like my tattoos and piercings have zero influence on mine. However, when an employer says "no piercings or tattoos," I take out my piercings and cover my tattoos. You know the rules, if you don't like them, don't work there.

Well said.

JUliet25: People with any common sense know when they are being played--but Courts and juries often don't.
Nor the media.

Many posters on other threads about this issue agree that Ms. Boudlal may be trying to play Disney for a settlement for which she may not be entitled. Is she filing a lawsuit against Disney? Or, are CAIR-Los Angeles and the union, UNITE, going to file on her behalf against Disney? Or, is this going to go through the EEOC complaint route?

She obviously has been told that almost any game can be played in (or should I say on?) the courts here in the good old USA!!!!

I agree she shouldn't win.
But with the current political climate of government forced on the people rather than by the people, I wouldn't put anything past the courts.
Too many cases of courts making law these days.
Especially in Cal.
