Muslim CM sues Disney

I agree she shouldn't win.
But with the current political climate of government forced on the people rather than by the people, I wouldn't put anything past the courts.
Too many cases of courts making law these days.
Especially in Cal.

No offense to Californians, but I forgot about that. I think you just hit the nail on the head. She may very well end up having a case unfortunately.

I'm so tired of people complaining. Every work place has rules, if you want to work there you have to follow those rules. If you don't want to follow their rules, LEAVE, and go work somewhere else. It's such BS. People need to have personal responiblity. It's all for attention & a quick dollar. I hope it gets thrown out of the courts. I don't think it should have gotten any attention to start with.:sad1: And shame on her for trying to sully Disney's name!

Based on the poll posted in another Board, the overwhelming # of people with any sense aren't falling for this.

The courts however, would be another story---

I'm far from a legal expert but it seems to me that employers have always retained the right to dictate appearance standards for their employees...within reason, of course. And that includes limiting garb which is rooted in religious beliefs.

Even if a lower court were to rule in her favor, Disney would certainly appeal and I cannot believe that any higher court would uphold the ruling.

I only wish I could agree--often the "higher" courts are even farther removed from reality than their lower bretheren.

What I don't understand is that last May I was in Disneyworld and I noticed a Muslim working at one of the restaurants and she did have a head scarf on and it was quite beautiful, many guests ahead of me also commented on how beautiful it was, I don't recall the country she was from but she was in college and involved in one of the programs. She was very pleasant and smiled while she filled soft drink orders.

Now it did not cover her face so I don't understand why this woman is suing Disney, and I hope that she loses. Publicity stunt or not you can't cover your face and Disney is a private company and has dress code rules.

That probably follows what this article mentioned. The lady sueing was told that she could not wear her own head covering while "in costume", but was fitted so they could make her one that would compliment the costume she had to wear for the position. In the meantime, while the custom costume piece was being fabricated, she was given the option of either going without the head covering, or working a "back-of-house" position where she would not interact with guests and the costuming requirements had a little more wiggle room to allow her to wear her head covering.

I'm assuming the person you ran into at WDW in Florida had a custom covering made for them as part of the costume.

Personally, if this case does make it to court, I see Disney not only bringing up the fact they offered to work with her, but the fact that they have done similar things with various cast members across both parks in the past. This would hopefully be enough to show on their part that they do work to make accommodations for the needs of the religious beliefs.

Only because she is a Muslim! If she were a Christian or Jew the media would care less. The poor Muslim is how they view it and they look down on anything else.

IT IS A FREAKING CHRISTMAN TREE NOT A HOLIDAY TREE.

Maybe in America, but here in Britain we had a very similar story with a Christian. The media loved it, and the nation was fairly split on it.

I actually think the media would be worse if it was a Christian in america - I'm quite sure there would be Christians shouting on the street about constitutional rights blah blah blah.

Google BA cross for details.

Also, I always thought it was a ChristmaS tree :confused3

I really don't think Christians are an oppressed or downtrodden group in the United States -- nor do I see what relevance that has on this case. The idea that Christians are somehow persecuted here or left out in the dark or ignored is just bizarre.

That said, I don't think this woman has much of a case. But i only know the facts I've read in the link here -- it's really hard to pass judgment one way or another based on a quickie news story.

Wow I don't know how old you are but when I was in school we used to decorate the classroom for Christmas now you can't even say Christmas in school. The media thinks it is hip to support anything Muslim these days and so does the current President who wants to actually talk with that maniac in Iran. Going off your name if that is your only news source that is why you have that view point.

This country was founded on Christian/Jewish beliefs. People that come here should be conforming to our culture we should not be accommodating or conforming to them.

I am not saying we should pass a law like France banning Burkas (but I am slowly leaning that way) but enough is enough.

Also they are actually trying to build a freaking Mosque at ground 0 tell me that isn't a slap in the face.

Bottom line is she has 0 right to wear it if Disney doesn't want her to.

Watch any media broadcast during that season.

I am not even religious so don't take me for some crazy Christian, I am not religious and my wife is Jewish so I am tolerant up to a point.

That's a myth. But this is getting off topic now so I won't press the issue. I would encourage you to investigate this on your own not to argue with me on a chat board -- since these kinds of debates rarely end with one side agreeing with the other -- but to satisfy your own curiosity and learn more about the people who founded this nation.

"Christianity neither is, nor ever was a part of the common law."
-- Thomas Jefferson

PS: I am a Christian myself, so I am not a hater of religion or Christianity.

I disagree we should not be conforming to anything from that part of the world, nor should we be allowing a mosque to be built on ground 0.

I have no problem with anyone practicing any religion as long as it does not interfere with day to day life.

SHE HAS NO RIGHT TO WEAR THIS ON PRIVATE PROPERTY IF SHE IS TOLD TO TAKE IT OFF.

I am not even religous I just hate to see people abuse the system.

And THAT is exactly what this is--shoving their religion in your face.
Personally--I don't want to see it.
Freedom of Religion should allow anyone to worship in their own way, in their own home, in their own house of worship (or even in their own mind). But making the community have to accomodate it is just plain wrong.
Let her wear that thing on her head at home, walking down the street, or even in the bathtub.
But not at WDW where it clearly against their dress policy. She accomodates them--not the other way around

Seems to me that this girl is just abusing
the very system that allows you to be free.
And touching on a previous comment on a mosque
being built 2 blocks from "Ground Zero", I
happen to have lost a close neighbor(Fireman)
in that catastrophe and can personally tell you
that his children will NEVER get over that. It's
an absolute INSULT to build anywhere near there!
-just a couple of thoughts from L.I.,N.Y.

By the way...take a wild guess how many mosques
are in Manhattan? Need one more Huh? at ground zero?

Any mods out there that can shut this thread down? It is turning into some religious and political thing that is being highly insensitive to whole religious group out there. I for one am saddened to see this kind of hatred, especially on the DisBoards.

Agreed it is disgusting.

I think people are getting off topic and missing the point. She was hired to play a role/ portray an image at a themed restaurant. CMs are hired to provide diners with a specific experience. Disney could apply the same restrictions to one's hair style/color, tattoos, piercings (don't flame me on these..I have nothing against these. They are only examples.), length of fingernails, or any other attire. A Jewish male that wishes to wear his yamika (sp?) would likely be subjected to the same scrutiny as this woman if it interfere with the overall appearance of the costume. Yes, I know it is smaller, but it is the same principle. You can come up with all kinds of examples. It comes back to the fact that she was hired to convey an image at a themed restaurant. She can ask for accommodations based on her religion. She did, and Disney complied. She did not like those accommodations. She showed up to work on 8 different occasions, was offered those options, refused, and was sent home 8 times then fired. I would say that Disney was more than fair.

Very well stated. This has very little to do with religious persecution and is more about protecting the image that Disney has created for their parks and ensuring that their customers see CMs in proper costumes.

BTW- It's yarmulke.... :thumbsup2
