Moving, packing and the big snowglobe question...

We are opting to self pack as much as we can as we have 11 years of life to decluttering. It's just easier to pack our own boxes.

Most fragile items will be packed by the movers.

My dd has 2 snowglobes: 1 is a Precious Moments globe and the other is a Disney Aristocats Marie globe. Neither is really replaceable--so should they break in transit, the insurance will do little for my 10 year old.

My question is---what should I do?

Trust the movers or self carry? We no longer have either box and had never really anticipated a move out of state of this magnitude.

If we self carry, I really don't know how to pack it. But at least while it is in our posession...I will be able to make sure it is in a safe place in our van.

Suggestions?

My first thoughts would be:

Extra thick cardboad box. The kind delicate electronics come in.
No packing peanuts - they can shift with movement. Maybe wadded up newspapers or towels or clothing instead.
Lots and lots of bubble wrap around the actual globe.

I guess I would try to find a really extra heavy duty couple of boxes, then lay down a towel in the bottom of each box. I'd wrap the snow globes in several layers of bubble wrap and put them down in the box. I'd fill in the space with a lot of small towels and/or t-shirts and other jersey material clothing until it was pretty tight, then close the box and tape it shut. Label it clearly and threaten everyone in the household with immediate and instant pain if they didn't treat the snowglobe boxes with utmost respect and care. ;)

But that's just a guess. Hopefully some other posters have had actual experience. (We just let the packers deal with everything when we move. Lost one $40 antique mason jar in two moves, so I'm fine with it.)

I would go to the UPS store and explain that you want to self carry these on your move and have them pack them for you. They are very experienced with shipping fragile things and I am sure they can pack them for you for a small fee. I love my local UPS store!

Funny you should ask. I just moved from Ohio to Florida. We used United Mayflower's moving container service where they drop off the big container, you pack it and they transport it to your new location. In the entire move I lost one item -- my Little Mermaid snowglobe.

I had a large box and in it were several of my Disney collectibles in smaller boxes (most of them in their original boxes) that fit nice and snug in the larger box. I did not have the original box for the snowglobe, but I had the styrofoam packaging pieces that surrounded the snowglobe when it was purchased. I thought for sure it would be okay, but no.

Obviously I'm no help, but I think I'd go with the previous poster who suggested you have a professional pack your snowglobes.

We moved a year ago and yup, the one and only thing that broke was a snowglobe. I would self carry it.

If these are really important to you, do as the PP suggests and have them packed at the UPS store, then label them clearly and self-carry.
We had a snowglobe that survived a (professional) move, but when we got to the new house and I unpacked it, I just grabbed the wrapping wrong somehow and the thing rolled out onto the floor and broke. :( So be careful unpacking as well as packing!

Probably the UPS ideas are good, but I know that when I'm packing stuff like that, I save them for last (so they don't get accidentally buried under other stuff), put them in a soft tote (one tote each...and is there such a thing as a *hard* tote bag?) with clothes ALL around it, then just carry them right with me, putting them on my lap.

I just moved 26 snowglobes-they are Christmas decorations. I packed them in small boxes with styrofoam wraped around them, in peanuts then in a larger box also packed with peanuts. They took up some major space but they all made the move in perfect condition.

I moved with about 15 snowglobes. I wrapped them in towels and lined the boxes with more towels and bubble wrap in the boxes. All of them made it without a scratch. It also helped when I wrote on the boxes "Drop and you die"

Thanks for the tips....the last suggestion especially.:lmao:
