Moving Near Nashville, TN I need some help! Please.

You do not want to move to Antioch. Lots of crime and the Metro school system is horrible. I wouldn't move north of Smyrna unless you go to the east or west like Franklin or Lebanon. Antioch is not a good area. It may seem cheap and it is for a reason. All the stores in the mall up there are closing down due to gang activity. A good place to look around is bobparks.com. I can't post url's yet but they are the biggest realtor in town and you can get an idea of what home prices are like and the area. Murfreesboro has a lot of apartments but we also have a big college campus here so there will be some college kids just about everywhere you look. The school is a big part of the community and the college kids are not bothersome at all. I was a little hesitant to move to a college town even though I attend MTSU myself but it's not even an issue anymore. As long as you stay away from Anticoh you'll be just fine.

I second what hollieplus 2 said. I would suggest the Bellevue area, Goodlettsville, or Hendersonville.

My son will be a freshman at MTSU in the Fall. We have only made brief trips down there, so we don't know much about the town. He'll be living on campus and looking for part time work.

Any tips appreciated.

I completely agree with just about everything you've said here. The only comment I'll add is that Murfreesboro is NOT your typical college town. Murfreesboro spans about a 15 mile radius. It's huge. The college is only one very small part of Murfreesboro.

I agree Smyrna Murfreesboro is a much better area. Franklin is very nice but very expensive. Both have good schools. We live in Smyrna and go to Disney every year. It takes us 12-13 hours to get there. that is traveling with 3 children and at night. Hope you have a great move.

And to FORMERNYER , whats your favorite part about living in TN now? I am a little nervous about moving from NY to the south? Also we will be custom building our home as well, after about a year. How are property prices there? And Construction Costs?

I'm going to make a comment that I was flamed for by some sensitive southerners the last time I made it. There was some definite culture shock when I moved here. People do things VERY differently in the south than they do in the north. Some of the changes I was able to adjust to instantly (e.g., friendliness), while others took some time (e.g., slow pace...no such thing as "fast food" in the south ). Some things I will never, ever adjust to (e.g., no such thing as good pizza, good bagels, good canolis, good Chinese food, etc.) Overall, I love it here and I'd never want to go back to NY.

It's really hard to give an answer about property prices, because it varies so greatly from place to place. Your best bet is to find areas you like and then price out the homes you like.

I live about an hour and 45 minutes north of Nashville in Kentucky, but as far as the average temperature here(we go to Nashville to shop/visit often and it's pretty much the same)....well...it varies. We often say, "if you don't like what the weather is doing right now, just stick around...it'll change in 10 minutes". We've had 50º days in January, and last week had some pretty cool days for May(in the 50's). Now we are having one of the warmest Memorial Days I can remember(upper 80's). I'd say the biggest adjustment that you'd have to make is that when we get a pretty good snow--and that's 4-5 inches for us, most everything will shut down! Major highways will still be open, but schools, many businesses, etc. will close because we just aren't used to driving in the stuff. We are better prepared than we used to be in some areas with salt, etc. but it still affects us.

I live in Mt. Juliet and find that it is a great place to live. The taxes are low, the schools are good (no matter what formernyer says ), and it is growing rapidly. Most of the people I know are transplants so it made it easier to get to know people. As a matter of fact, Mt Juliet is the fastest growing city in the state (Rutherford County is the fastest growing county). We also have a fairly quick commute to downtown Nashville (around 17 miles) which is also nice.

Williamson County is awesome, but can be very expensive. We rented in Brentwood when we first moved by houses were too expensive when we were ready to buy which is how we ended up here. You do want to avoid Antioch. It can be scary! Hermitage has many apartments and is a much nicer area. We rented when we relocated here and scouted around before we committed to one area.

Hey Nicole,
Just another suggestion for you to think about, I live in Hendersonville, TN, which is very very nice and it is starting to look a lot like Franklin/Brentwood area around here with the new construction. It is a pricey place to live as well, but not as bad as Franklin....very nice areas and the schools are ranked very high.

I live near Memphis but we recently drove to Nashville just so we could fly Southwest to Orlando from Nashville. I agree with the poster that said Southwest can have some great deals. We were going to drive but we found tickets $90 roundtrip non-stop from Nashville so we decided that a 4 hr drive to Nashville would be better than 10 hrs a day in a van with 2 small kids! Plus it turned out to be cheaper than we would have spent in gas so keep your eyes open for deals on Southwest!

I just laughed at your comment. I am a northerner and moved here with my husband in 2003. He is originally from Smyrna and I had never been here before. We moved here from Seattle and what a culture shock. I couldn't understand half of what people were saying to me and there was no starbucks anywhere. I hated it at first. No one would talk to me about anything other than church. That's the first thing they asked me. "Oh, you're new here, what church do you go to?" That took awhile The south is definatley different and it takes some getting used to but I love it now and can't imagine living anywhere else. It's a great place to raise a family and of all the places I like Murfreesboro the best. Smyrna is great also but Murfreesboro tends to get all the good stores and restaurant's. The only thing I miss is the World Market. We really need one down here.

I have recently been looking for Apartments for our Dd that lives in La Vergne Tn Which is SE of Nashville in the same area as Smyrna and Murfreesboro.

I have been using http://nashville.craigslist.org/ . They have an Apt. listing. What I have found most useful is the google map and the yahoo map feature. The you can see what area the apt is in. this is what a post looks like;

You will notice under the main body of the post an address if you click google map you will a map simular to a yahoo map, but with google maps, on the right side there are 3 words, Map, like a road map, Satillite, which is an Arial Satillite photo of the area, and Hybrid which maps the roads and gives you an Arial view of the apartments.

What I have learned is Nashville is like a Six legged Octopus. And off each leg there are suburbs and and outer burbs up to 25 miles away.

My Dd has lived there 5 yrs now and She said the there are 2 things you really need to watch out for, High Crime areas and Weather areas ie Hurricane Paths. Some areas are more prone to really bad storms.

Apts in LAVergne, Smyrna, and Murfreesboro go from $695.00 to $1095 for 3 br 1 bath Apts many are in the $995. range.

Dd likes the La Vergne area because it has the lesser storms, she works there and wants to find an Apt in the area.

I hope what I have had to figure out helps you to find an Apt. And please if you have or find a good apt seeking site please let me know!! I wish you much luck in your search!!

LaVergne can be a little rough. I personally would not live there. As you drive down the road from Murfreesboro to Smyrna to LaVergne to Nashville you'll see a gradual deterioration. Murfreesboro is beautiful and Smyrna is a very nice place to live too. By the time you reach LaVergne it's very patchy. Some of LaVergne is pretty nice, but most of it has gone very downhill even since I've lived in the South.

hollieplus2 - we have 2 Starbucks in Brentwood (one with a drive thru on Old Hickory by the new Publix) and another on Franklin Rd near REI. Franklin has Starbucks too! There is one near Cool Springs and another just off 96.

Thanks so Much for all the great info!! I appreciate it. IS there ALOT Of crime in TN? I have heard alot about it on the boards. Also, I usually check www.apartments.com or rent.com for apartment rentals. I don't know if you have checked those out yet. Thanks again for the listings.

Tennessee is a beautiful place to live. Just east of Nashville is one of my favorite spots. The Cumberland Plateau is amazing. I lived in Cookeville, Putnam county for ten years. It is 1-1.5 hours east of Nashville. It is a small town, about 65k people. The neat thing about this town is that it is tucked in where there is not much else. Because of this it is quite eclectic. Local art, pretty good food and even sometimes great. It is still the south. The local stockyard is on the main strip of road. I found that odd when I moved there. It was once the most affordable town in the country I think. The cleanest lake in Tn is close by. Center Hill lake is breathtaking. This is where Alan Jackson, the country singer, lives. Property should still be reasonable. Good luck and God bless.

Crime in Nashville is not that bad. There are bad sections but overall, I don't think it's as bad compared to other places.
