Moving Help

I am having a moving company pack & move all of my stuff for my move from NY to TX. I do have to take quite a few things with me. I own a Chevy Equinox which is a mid-sized SUV. I already can tell I am running out of space! Can anyone recommend some sort of storage container or roof top container for my truck? I checked Uhaul for the roof pouch but they are unavailable for 1 way moves. Or does anyone have another idea? I do not want to tow anything. Thanks!!!!

Why are you taking so much stuff with you? I would send as much stuff on the truck as possible, personally, for a trip that long. If it is things they won't take, like cleaning supplies, throw them out or donate them and buy new later. It isn't worth the money to haul that stuff.

If you need to take a bunch of stuff, they have some soft sided car top carriers that would be nice because they are easy to store later on. If you have a trailer hitch, they have some carriers that hook into a hitch that are like a shelf (you aren't towing anything).

I am moving to Ft Hood. Since the Army is moving me it's going to be about 28 days before my belongings will arrive. I have 2 cats, their stuff, my clothes, basics, sheets & blankets - pillows but on top of it I have my wedding dress, wedding things for our Disney Wedding that I would NEVER trust with a mover.

Thank you for the suggestions I emailed a company about purchasing a roof top container.

I feel your pain. We've moved several times and there are some things the movers just won't take, and it never seems consistant.

Cleaners are one thing. Some won't take any of them, some will only take certain ones, but then you want to clean the place you're moving into before the movers get there.

Candles are another thing, although that may only be during the hotter months, or when going into storage.

The propane tank on your gas grill. I'd love to have an extra one because it always seems to go out when you have company over and are grilling, but it takes up too much room.

DH and I finally bought a tow behind encosed trailer. It's mostly for his motorcycle and camping, but it's a lifesaver for moving. WE can put our vacuum cleaner and steam vac in as well.

Also, look in the automotive section of Target, I think they have something similiar on the shelves.

Maybe something like this will work if you need a little extra room. I agree tho that you may have to look into something in a pull behind rental if you're taking that much stuff with you.

Actually it's my fhubby that is serving in The Army but I will pass the blessings along. And I am headed from NY to TX...a big change! I see your from TX!! I gotta lose this NY Accent!!!

I still say you are taking too much with you. I've moved more times than I can count.

Your clothes. Take a weeks worth. No more than 1 ave sized suitcase. You are going from NY to TX is that right (you have it both ways)? When are you moving?

The cats, all you need is enough supplies to make it through the trip. Litter, food and maybe a few toys.

How are your getting your wedding stuff to WDW? When is the wedding? Can you ship the stuff to your coordinator now, rather than drag it to TX and then to FL?

I'd also consider UPSing, things like sheets (1set), towels (2), a blanket. In TX you won't need a comforter or anything like that right away.

Is your finace already in TX? Will he already have basics like towels and sheets there?

We've moved from:
IL to OR
OR to SC
SC to TN
TN to TX
all with cats and a kid in tow and could always make the space constraints work.

My best friend used to live in Harker Heights when her DH was stationed at Ft. Hood. She did her residency at Scott and White Hospital.

I'd look on ebay for a rooftop storage rack. You'll need it for future moves anyway and as you replace cars, you'll just need to replace the brackets.

When you get to Ft. Hood, please, for me, go to the Hallmark Restaurant and have a chicken fried steak. They were fabulous, from what I remember... almost worth a trip back to central TX just for that!

As for cleaning supplies, doesn't the hospitality station on post have cleaning supplies for you to use when you first get there, assuming you're living on post?

I was going to suggest shipping too. With gas costs what they are the loss of mileage from putting something on the roof can easily cost more than packing a couple boxes and sending them down. There may be a place you can ship to at the base that will hold for your arrival too.

Regarding your clothes, you will probably need just a couple pairs of pants, otherwise our weather should be shorts weather soon, and coming from New York it will feel like it much faster to you than it does to the rest of us. You might need one light jacket or sweatshirt, but you may not even need that. You could have the movers handle everything else.

Most of your basic supplies can be picked up at Super WalMart or Target and will cost you less in the long run than moving it down. Or I bet you can get even better deals on base!

For space savings in the move you might check into some Rubbermaid tubs that stack - they took up less room and fit better than regular boxes when we moved. We managed to survive 3 weeks on what fit in our Ford Expedition, and we had DH and I, DD, 2 cats and a dog to leave room for.

He has been living in a hotel till our on post housing is ready & his personal things are on there way back from his 1 year tour in Korea. So he basically has his uniforms, clothes & bare nessecities.

I would say ship it via UPS or another shipping company when possible. Sears sells decently priced roof top carriers. I don't know if they do long distant moves or the prices, but you can also try pods.com
