While talking with DS10 this morning about his day off from school for MLK day, we started talking about Martin Luther King. I was shocked to hear that DS has made it all the way to 4th grade and didn't realize that MLK had been assassinated. He had learned about all the things he had done while alive, but never how he died. The conversation steered towards the civil rights movement and the many people who had died for standing up for what they believed in.

I know that a lot of movies had been made about the heroes of the civil rights movement, but I'm drawing a blank here. DS and I thought it would be fun to do a "Civil Rights" movie festival for a week, with each day being a different movie about the times. Any suggestions so I can update my nexflick list??? I know Whoopi Goldberg was in "The Ghosts of Mississippi" and that was a good movie. Any other suggestions? What was the name of the movie about the 4 girls that were killed????

Mississippi Burning

ETA: Oops, that was a movie suggestion not an answer to the question.

There was a mini-series titled "King" that Ossie Davis and Cicely Tyson were in that might be available.

Some other of theme, but not direct times... Remember the Titans, Hairspray, To Kill a Mockingbird

You could also incude Malcolm X in there. Denzel Washington did a wonderful movie about him.

Now, Malcolm and MLK did not see eye to eye with the movement. Malcolm frequently was criticizing MLK.

Interesting historical dynamic there. I suppose I would not leave out the assassination of Malcolm either.

I was going to say Remember the Titans, as well as A Time to Kill.

That was a great movie, I'd definitely include that one. :thumbsup2

Forest Gump has a lot of really great teaching moments in it too, including Civil Rights. I think I was about 10 when that came out, I remember going to see it in the theater and thinking it was like watching a live history book.

Thanks everyone for all the suggestions, I think this is going to be a fascinating week. And the youtube clip - Wow!!!!
