I hear alot of upset folks out there over the "Betrayus" ad in the New Yoork TImes.

Fine. I don't like this kind of crap either. It is intentionally devisive and does not encourage constructive dialog. Thankfully we do have our Democratic leadership coming out against it.

But why is this any different than the Swift Boat ads? When the election was looming, those Swift Boat ads were all over the TV, radio, and print. Folks on this board quoted the information ad nauseum despite repeatedly being informed that many (if not most) of the quotes came from people who NEVER worked with the man. Swift Boat and Snopes

Is there a double standard?

I apologize if my response upsets somebody, but I have to respond...

General Petraeus has served this country since he entered the Military Academy in 1970. How dare anyone do something like this.

Hate Bush? fine. Hate the war? It is your right. But to do this to someone who has served his country so faithfully is a disgrace. Are we returning to the days of Vietnam? Should we throw food and feces on him? One can protest the war without insulting those who faithfully uphold the vow they took to defend this country.

Even the Democrats he spoke to in congress treated him with dignity and respect. At least MoveOn.org can do the same

But Laz, how does this differ from what Swift Boat folks were doing?

Mr. Kerry served this country in Viet Nam. Are saying it is the length of service that counts and enough years makes one "hands off" for this kind of thing?

You are comparing apples and oranges.

Politicians are elected officials. Army Generals are not.

So you are saying it is OK to lie in order to influence an election?

I'd also like to point out that General Petraeus was confirmed by the Senate without a dissenting vote.

For the Dem politicians in Congress to now question his integrity and loyalty is beneath contempt.

Speaking of Ads I listen to ABC on my car radio. I have heard pro war commercials after Good Morning America. They are saying we will be attacked if we pull out of Iraq. Has anyone seen them?

Bull. Both have served this country.

Why should one be subject to attacks and one not.

I don't know much about this, being in the UK, but from the little I do know I agree with you.

Are you claiming the Swiftboat ads were lies? Not according to the Snopes link provided by the OP. I can't cut & paste (computer is acting up) but read the second paragraph after "Origins"

I can't cut and paste either. It must be Snopes. While the men were indeed Swiftboaters and served in Vietnam, the truth (according to Snope) is only one of the letters quoted in the ads came from a swiftboat shipmate of Kerry's. The rest did not even know John Kerry. And that is the truth.

Never mind the second paragraph, read the 3rd again.

If you read a little bit further on.....of the med who were quoted as berating Kerry....only ONE served with him.

Of the ones complimenting Kerry....all of them worked with Kerry .

No different! Question Kerry's political desicions? fine. Raise doubts about his abilities to be a future commander in chief? Your right to do so. But I could not stand it when they tried to dig into his military record. I could not stand it when they dug into G. W. Bush's record as well. I do not like it at all.

OK, I will take exception to that. I think it is fine to question the potentioal Commander in Chief's military record. But it should be with real and not fabricated information.
