Does it help any that the smart people know not to pay any attention to these radical fringe groups? Both sides have them - fringe groups and smart people.

Would that make Al Gore "not so smart" for speaking at their gatherings?

IMO you underestimate the power of that "fringe" group and the people who fund it. Smart or dumb, many people have aligned themselves with that group.

Do you think the My Lai Massacre happened?

Too bad John Kerry wasn't treated with respect when his service to this country was mocked by the Bush supporters.

I find it ironic that you lament the "lack of respect" for John Kerry's service and yet you don't seem to respect General Patreaus's service all that much.

I've long agreed with that assessment as the central failing of the Bush Administration. I think they decided from the very early post-9/11 days that trying to bring the opposition into the tent in any meaningful way would be a fruitless effort. And so they decided not to waste any energy doing so. IMO, a big mistake, as back then I think the effort might have paid at least some dividends.

I actually think that was President Bush's achilles heel. He kept too many people in place from the previous administration, he played "lets make a deal and a bill" with Ted Kennedy, He moved to far to the left on immigration, he responded to the calls for Rumsfeld's job, did not support Gonsalez as much as he should have, and that is just off the top of my head. The lesson learned is, no matter how much you "give" or "don't give", the results is still the same; to the left side of the aisle, the president can't do anything right.

Iraq is an important, serious issue, and he was grilled on it accordingly. I see you are omitting the hard questions your beloved Republicans asked. Isn't that convenient. Cretins indeed.

I don't have a problem with hard questions, I have a problem of 45 minutes of pontificating before the first question was even asked, and the pontificating before every other question.

Do you think the My Lai Massacre happened?

Yes, it did but that's not what Kerry was specifically testifying about.

I just find it ironic that he was so anti-war when he returned but 30 years later stood there saluting the DNC with "John Kerry, reporting for duty".

And while testifying in 71, he admitted to committing acts considered war crimes.
