Moved from the Budget Board: anyone else eliminating High Fructose Corn Syrup

I wish I could find that sugar only soda for an occasional sip but have resorted to drinking water only for the time being and there has been a drastic & immediate improvement.

The no-soda thing was causing my husband to feel so deprived he was at the brink of going crazy with Coca Cola. Then we noticed that the Thomas Kemper root beer does NOT have HFCS anymore. They did the last time we checked! But in early July, the case at Costco is labeled with cane juice. He is now having one every couple days, and he feels much better.

My fault for the lazy posting. I should have posted "I'm not convinced that chemically altered high fructose corn syrup is the debil."

Sorry for the miscommunication.

Assuming you mean "devil", I'd invite you over to watch my son when he eats HFCS (or corn syrup or corn syrup solids), to see if it is or is not the devil. But we don't feed it to him anymore b/c it makes him so miserable, so I won't invite you.

It's possible to lose weight and feel great by altering your diet in any positive way, even without giving up HFCS. But I think that anyone can admit that reducing the amount of junk made in a lab is going to be a good thing. :goodvibes

I have a tough question! I am trying to eliminate HFCS. I noticed in some articles that English Muffins has it. But I looked at the ingredients and it is not listed. Does HFCS have another name? Do they hide it and I am just not reading it? What else should I really try to eliminate...I know hydrogenated oils.

Some do, some don't. You have to read the ingredients, and IMO, you have to read it every time. Thomas' recently changed their ingredients...while we were still finding them with HFCS in them, others were reporting new packaging and new ingredients. Finally those packages made their way to our stores. You just have to check around!

I'm going to try to find catsup at Whole Foods, or worse case, learn to make it myself. I agree that this stuff is such a culprit when it comes to weightloss.

My DH and I have gone to Europe twice, both times for three weeks. We lost 15 pounds (each time) and we were eating quite well. Our pants were falling off of us the last few days.

I made a wonderful chocolate cake for DH birthday the other day. Made it with REAL sugar and even cream for the ganache. All I could manage was one small piece.

Sorry I ended up ranting. I just really want to know if other folks are finding this to be a problem for them.

There's the same problem with bbq sauce, it's in virtually every brand of bbq sauce. I like the Annie's, am using that now. I found some good steak sauce at one of our local farms that they produce that I'm using now.

For BBQ sauce, check Bull's Eye. I had been a big Sweet Baby Ray's fan, but then decided to give up the HFCS and started reading labels. I found Bull's Eye at my store without the HFCS and it even had a big sticker on the front saying that it doesn't contain HFCS.

Other things that I've found:

salad dressing - the new Naturally Delicious is without HFCS

White Tea (which I love) - Snapple and Turkey Hill don't have it. Lipton does and I can now taste the difference.

For breads - look for anything labeled ALL NATURAL. At the store where I shop, they have a store brand that's all natural and so does Pepperidge Farm.

Ice Cream - Breyer's All Natural

Basically, ALL NATURAL are good words to look for.

Thanks! We do have Thomas and I was happy it is not in there! I did really well today! I even had bread without HFCS! Now, to rid the house of the bbq sause!

Olde Cape Cod makes BBQ sauce w/o HFCS. It is even labeled that way. Of course the bottles are smaller than the mainstream brands, but we all know that eating healthy usually comes at a price. All of their varieties of salad dressing my store carries is also HFCS-free too.

I also scoured the bread aisle and the Arnold's breads and rolls my local store carries does not have HFCS either!

I am from Canada and HFCS is actually called gluctose-fructose.

Okay guys, my turn to chime in, I only got to page 15 of this thread, and this question may already be answered, but here it goes, I have read the Karo site, which makes corn syrup, and if corn syrup has HFCS in it, which it does, then do I also need to look for item that have corn syrup in it as well as the HFCS? It would seem it would be a derivative of HFCS, maybe not as concentrated, but still there. I am asking because my Total Raisin Bran and Fruity Cheerios have corn syrup but not HFCS. Any help is appreciated. I also want to send out my kudos to everyone for helping me totally cleanse my pantry and frig/freezer of this crud. I have slowly been getting on the bandwagon but since I stumbled on this thread and been reading all week, boy did I go nuts. Out went the Frosted Shredded Wheat, Miracle Whip, ketchup, cranberry sauce, hot dog and hamburger buns, Spaghettios and Kraft Zesty Italian dressing. I have bought Henry's mustard for a long time now, and am glad to see they also have a ketchup. It can be bought at Sun Harvest, which I know are stores that are few and far between. I also usually buy Seeds of Change salad dressing, which has no HFCS and are really yummy. The hardest thing I had trouble finding is white bread for my DS 17 who won't touch wheat bread. I finally scoured the aisles and Archer Farms Whole Grain White did not have it in it. But now I am worried it has corn syrup!

Any help on the corn syrup question is very much appreciated. We have to unite in this battle!

I just did a short shopping trip to Trader Joes. Nothing I saw there had HFCS. In fact, most items I looked at didn't even have corn syrup! Some did, but alot didn't.

We got ketchup, pb, jam, hazelnut spread, bread. and their canned corn was cheaper than our regular store brand and has no sugar in it. I can' believe that most canned corn has added sugar! I think I will start doing much of my shopping at Trader joes!

The one thing I've seen at Trader Joe's that has HFCS is the frozen teriyaki chicken rice bowls - which my son loves. :sad1: We haven't been able to find those anywhere without the HFCS (unless he wanted to switch from chicken to tofu...then we could find something at Whole Foods...but he's 10, he doesn't want tofu!)

I was just at TJ's and disappointed to see that the chocolate brownie bite cookies DO have HFCS. Had to put those back!

Someone a few pages back asked about avoiding MSG? Yes, I do that as well. Dh gets migraines and I've heard MSG can be a big culprit in causing them. Thankfully there are bouillon powders out with no MSG but I sure wish I could get canned soup without it! Sometimes I just don't have time to stand around making white sauce to put into a casserole or whatever!

Thanks to who sent me a link to this thread! My 15yo son and I have decided this summer to eliminate HFCS and I cannot believe the changes in us! He's already lost 20 pounds and has more energy!

The amazing thing is it's changed his entire view of food. Before he liked fruits but it was a chore to get him to eat vegetables. Now he prefers salads with red wine vinegar to chicken nuggets or hamburgers and fries!! He reads ALL labels, and since he is lactose intolerant, he's done that for years.

Thanks for the list Trixiezzz! We've virtually given up bread and it's good to know there are some we can embibe! We did find some rolls in Publix with less than 2% HFCS, but none with NONE!

No problem with ketchup because he doesn't like it anyway. Sweets have been replaced with fruits and nuts. It's really been a blessing to see him so alert!

Subscribing!

Is there chicken bowls with out the teriyaki? I noticed when buying steak sauce the other day that the regular one didn't have HFCS, but the teriyaki and other flavors did.

You know, I hadn't thought to look. I'll have to check next time I'm there!

I am glad I found this thread! My DS10 was tested a month ago and found to have an allergy to it. He no longer has an unexplained rash on his face, digestive problems (no more zantac and pepto) and is much more calmer! He has been a real trooper when it came to giving up food with it in it and says he feels better!:thumbsup2 Now the challenge will be when he goes back to school! Getting the teachers to listen when your child has an allergy(especially not life threating) will be a challenge! He will not be buying lunch and I will have to know if there is a birthday or party so I can provide a treat for him. Other than that I have explained to him the most common things that have HFCS and to avoid them or face having the embarrassing digestive problems again. :scared1:

Watch out in the tomato products aisle!

I'm always checking labels, no matter how many times I've bought something. Always!

But I messed up! Thought I was grabbing regular tomato paste, and just after I put it in the Fantastic Foods vegetarian sloppy joe mix, to feed me and my son (hubby's not feeling well and was literally eating bread and water for dinner), I noticed the LONG list of ingredients.

Be sure you're getting just plain and simple tomato paste. And don't get "Contadina Tomato Paste product with Italian Herbs", b/c not only does it have all sorts of cheese in it, but the second ingredient is HFCS.

My poor boy had to have *another* PB&J sandwich, when he had finally agreed to try the sloppy joes....sigh.

Has anyone else seen the PRO-HFCS commercials. I saw two different ones today.

Bumbershoot, that must have been so frustrating!

Tonilea, I saw one of those commercials the other night. My 11 year old was yelling at the tv. He's very anti-HFCS, like the rest of our family. I must admit, the attitude of the lady pouring the "HFCS punch" bothered me.

I know the commercial is paid for by the Corn Refiners Association (or something like that), but they will never convince me that HFCS and sugar are the same. I eat sugar and I'm fine. I eat HFCS and tend to get kinda witchy. And I've seen DS14 totally change since we stopped eating HFCS - and I can tell when he's had some at school.

What really hit home with me after seeing that commercial was realizing I had survived the "first day of school crazies" without getting stressed out, without getting a stress headache and without feeling like yelling at my kids - which usually happens on the first day of school. And I was on the go that day from 6:30 am, when I got out of bed until 11:30 pm, when I crawled back into bed. I was on the go all day, between back to school, a birthday to shop for, needing food, etc. but I was happy/calm all day. Definitely worth giving up my coke/dr pepper for. :thumbsup2

Did anyone see this article:

http://shine.yahoo.com/channel/health/is-high-fructose-corn-syrup-really-worse-than-sugar-257511/

Considering that they have been negative about HFCS in the past makes me wonder...it almost sounds like they're agreeing that HFCS and sugar aren't much different. I totally agree with the Professor that says it's the amount of sugar we consume that is the biggest threat....but I still think HFCS has some side effects for some people that shouldn't be ignored. And maybe that's the problem...it doesn't have that effect on everyone, so it's easier to just ignore that aspect of the debate.
