Moved from the Budget Board: anyone else eliminating High Fructose Corn Syrup

Thank you so much! Do you know where they sell the sports drink?

another idea instead of gatorade and the like, is coconut water. It works to rehydrate the body and replace electryolytes. Not cheap by any means, since we've only found it in single serve tetra packs, but if you have a sick dehydrated kid, it is totally worth it :thumbsup2

I have a couple of GREAT bread machine recipes. I do not like the way my bread machine bakes, so I use it on the dough cycle and then take it out, put it in a pan and let it rise and bake it in the oven. Well worth it for the taste, texture, price and nutrition. :hippie:

please please please post the recipes. I am getting very frustrated trying to find a good bread recipe, but I'd really like to make more from scratch. My son seems to be going through a toast phase (he's autistic spectrum and goes in weird spurts) and he's going to bankrupt me with the prices of loaves without all the yucky stuff in them. Oh, we've been eating Pepperidge Farms Naturals Honey Flax Bread, that has no HFCS *and* no nuts. I'm allergic to tree nuts and it's disgusting how many breads use walnut meal.

I've known for a few years that I should be avoiding HFCS. But like all of you know and have said it can be difficult. Well this discussion started me again. So at the grocery store today I found a few items that my family likes that don't have it.

Del Monte fruit bowls (I only checked the peaches. My DD eats them everyday. And of course the cheaper store brand has it in it.)
Friendly's ice cream and Breyers (I know that was all ready mentioned.)
And the YoCrunch vanilla yogurt with Nestle crunch pieces.

Would you be willing to share some of your bread recipes? Always on the lookout for good ones! While I do use my bread machine a lot in the winter (but I have the "traditional" loaf type not the tall one)....I also love to knead the bread and work it when I have the time. Alas, making bread every couple of days that doesn't happen a lot, lol....but it's a great upper arm exercise and frustration/agression releasor, lol.

As for slicing....well, I find that bread always slices better the day AFTER it's baked......doesn't do much when you simply HAVE to have that fresh baked bread taste, but wrap it in foil, stick in the fridge and cut it with the slicer doohickey the next day. The slicer simply helps you keep evenly sliced pieces, something my DH appreciates for his sandwiches, lol. And a VERY sharp serrated knife.

If you have a Sam's Club nearby, you might look at getting the large "#10" can of Del Monte fruit. I get this and then scoop it into 1/2 cup tupperware type containers to send in my DH's lunches. I personally prefer fresh fruit, but he likes canned so this is our compromise....he gets his canned, I get a half decent price.

Hi folks,

I'm the OP and I'm really thrilled with the response. Your posts have helped me find the resolve to really fight this nasty chemical. Thank you!

An earlier poster mentioned she'd start putting together a list. I'd like to work with her and have the list posted.

Here is a sample site. I can change the URL to StopHFCS (I bought that today---yes I was very inspired by you all).

I would just really appreciate feedback so I can know what folks want. The only working page is the Welcome page.

TIA for your input and thank you so much for all the support. :thumbsup2 Way to go DISboard!

The sample site is at http://www.lfsh.com/stophfcs/

BTW, I've contacted the other two sites that I know of to get their ok to cross promote our lists. Hopefully we can all get a large, comprehensive list out there soon!

Just thought you guys might be interested in the BS reply I got from Nabisco. To me, it actually sounds like they are defending their use of this stuff. :confused3 (I wrote them the other day to let them know I wouldn't be buying their products b/c of HFCS and Trans Fats, etc.

Thank you for visiting http://www.nabiscoworld.com.

You recently contacted us about the hydrogenated oil in Kraft Foods. We are sensitive to consumers' concerns regarding ingredients in the foods they eat. Health experts advise against trying to eliminate any single type of fat or fat-containing food from our diets since it can make it difficult to achieve proper dietary variety and nutrient intake. As always, we follow government rules for all ingredients used in our products.

As you're probably aware, hydrogenated oil is a vegetable oil that has been converted to a more solid form. This process allows the oil to be used in a larger variety of products. Hydrogenated oil is a more stable ingredient and does not become rancid as easily as other oils.

High fructose corn syrup is a common liquid sweetener. It is a type of sugar that is very similar to common table sugar in sweetness and chemical composition. High fructose corn syrup is a useful ingredient because of its stability, consistency and functionality.

Thank you sharing your opinion with us. I will pass your comments along to the product marketing team. We appreciate you taking the time to share your point of view.

I would love to see a list of words/ingredients that are used that mean the same as HFCS. This is where I am very confused.....because everyone is talking about difficult finding foods that don't have HFCS but my kitchen is full of products that don't list HFCS, so there must be other words being used to mean the same thing that make these foods of mine undesireable.

R.W. Knudsen makes a sports drink called Recharge. It is organic. It doesn't contain any sugar, just juices and sea salt (to restore electrolytes).

This stuff is great! I drank a gazillion cups of it while having William. DH loves it too!

We're eliminating HFCS too! Glad I found this thread!

Wow, Princess Michelle...talk about a BS answer! Especially the part that I've bolded...I don't know of any health experts who advocate the intake of trans fats.

What I've heard is that there is no use or purpose to trans fats, they are not natural and we should avoid them as much as possible - especially since they don't know what would be considered a "safe level" to eat. :sad2:

I know, right! I can't believe they think I'm that stupid! :snooty: But, this is coming from the same people who market foods loaded with trans fat as health foods. :sad2: I always picked wheat thins cause I thought they were healthy, but HFCS is one of the first ingredients on the list...... I also hate that they make people think granola bars are healthy (I used to). Most of them are LOADED with trans fats and HFCS, and are nothing but sugar, but they market them as healthy. :confused3

I know exactly what you mean!

What I find really difficult is finding a healthy snack I can send with my son to eat at school - he eats breakfast at 7:15 and doesn't get lunch until 12:30 or so and tends to have hypoglycemia, so a quick, portable snack is a necessity. I've been sending the chewy granola bars, even though I know they aren't the best choice, but they fit easily in his gym bag (nutrition break is right after gym) and he can eat them quickly. I should probably try to switch him to the Kashi TLC granola bars...not sure if he'd go for them or not...and then there's the fact that a box of 6 Kashi bars costs about $3-4.

I know exactly what you mean. DH loves granola bars, cereal bars and PB crackers in his lunch. LUCKILY, I found all of it at Trader Joes this past week :) I got these nutty chocolate covered ones and he LOVES them, so does DS. They're organic and everything....The only Kashi ones they will eat are the chocolate/cherry ones and the Peanut butter ones (both chewy). I like all the Kashi ones, but, no they don't appeal to the kids much. I get my Kashi bars at Target for like $2.70 something-or-other, have you tried there? They also make these yummy cookies, mmmmm.

I did get some at Target this week on sale for $2.50, but their regular price in our store is about $2.99 and the local grocery stores charge $3.99-4.59. :sad2:

Did TJs have peanut butter toast crackers with no trans fats? I don't think I've ever looked for those there. :scratchin

We buy Kashi bars by the case at Sams Club. They have the Odwalla ones too, but I haven't checked their nutrition stats in a while. DH loves those in his lunchbox, since he tends to be gone from the house for about 11 or so hours at a time. He brings a regular lunch and a Kashi bar to hold him over til then

The Odwalla stuff is good, no fakey stuff, I just checked. I seem to recall that's why we started buying them in the first place. They have lots of nice flavors too :goodvibes

I used to get the cases at BJs, but they would put the 3 different flavors and I only really like the peanut butter ones. Does Sams have them with the same flavors or different ones?

I haven't tried the Odwalla stuff...I'll have to keep an eye out for that.
