Moved from the Budget Board: anyone else eliminating High Fructose Corn Syrup

What do you guys think of making a "DIS" list of HFCS free foods? I would be glad to type it up and email it out to anyone that wanted it. I would just need some input from all of you. This might help to make shopping trips easier and share products that others might not be aware of.

I made a seperate email account just for this purpose. So please email me your food finds, grocery lists of all the HFCS-Free food you can think of.

Email it to HFCSFREE@gmail.com

As soon as I have the list done I will send it out or post it on the thread.

Great idea. One thought - if some of the foods are store-specific, please note that so we can somehow sort by that, since I don't have a lot of these stores in my area.

I tried fage for the first time this week. It was interesting. I know it's better but the consistency :scared1: I threw some Bear Naked Fit granola in it, next time I will try some fruit.

I add Kashi cereal and some honey to Fage yogurt. Also, I only buy the 1% or0% fat Fage yogurt. The regular one has way too much fat for me.

Does HFCS go by other names in the ingredient list? I went and checked some items in my kitchen and found:

Jif Peanut Butter lists: Roasted Peanuts and sugar; contains 2% or less of Molasses, fully hydogenated vegetable oils (grapeseed and soybean) mono and Diglycerides, salt.

Smucker's Low Sugar Concord Grape Jelly: Concord Grape Juice, sugar, water, fruit pectin, citric acide, lucust bean gum, potassium Sorbate added as a preservative, calcium chloride.

Hunts No Added Sugar Italian Style spaghetti sauce (I use this when I'm in a hurry or to lazy to make homemade from fresh tomatoes): Tomato puree (tomato water), water; less than 2% of salt, soybean oil, dehydrated onions, carrot fiber, spices (including soy lecithin) citric acid, xanthan gum, suclarose, acesulfame potasium, natural flavor.

Not sure on the bread as we buy it in a two pack at Sam's, and the ingredient list is on the outer wrapper that we throw away when we get home, but I'll check when we go to Sam's. But it would really help me if I knew other words they use for HFCS.

The girls also love to make PB&J on wheat tortillas as a snack, and those don't have anything that looks like it could be HFCS hiding....but again, a list would help!

We found HFCS in several things we eat as snacks, so we'll finish them up and then look for alternatives or once the weather has cooled (we're in Arizona and it's still in the 90's), we'll start baking some snacks......but I'm going to need to find some alternatives for next summer, as there is no way I'll turn the oven on when it's 110 outside!

Thats a good idea! I will do that

Does anyone know of a good Poppyseed Dressing that doesn't contain HFCS? Also, what about sports drinks? My boys are having to give up their Gatorade during baseball games and I feel badly for them! Thanks!!

R.W. Knudsen makes a sports drink called Recharge. It is organic. It doesn't contain any sugar, just juices and sea salt (to restore electrolytes).

Info on Recharge drink

Annie's Naturals makes an organic papaya poppyseed salad dressing.

I bought the fat free. Ahhh honey, good idea.

The list sounds awesome, but I would like to know if the product has artificial sweetners in it because we have cut those out as well.

Thank you so much! Do you know where they sell the sports drink?

I purchased a bottle at Whole Foods. It was on sale for 99 cents for a 32 oz bottle (haven't tasted it yet - I was holding onto it in case a child got sick and needed electrolyte replenishment). I don't think you'll be as lucky with the price. It looks like they have redesigned their packaging to go with plastic bottles. The bottle I purchased was glass and now I realize they were probably clearing out the old style packaging.

Here's a link to help locate retailers that might carry it. Some natural food stores will order things for you if they don't carry it.

Yes- Natures Own 100% WW- that's the only bread I can find at Publix without it. Also, check your yogurt. My ds5 LOVES it but I had to search to find one without HFCS that he'd eat. It's Dannon All Natural -only three flavors but he loves the blueberry. Also, NutriGrain Eggo waffles don't have it.

I haven't read the entire thread, so I don't know if it's been mentioned, but I believe Stonyfield Farms yogurt is HFCS free. Once we started eating this brand we noticed that everything else is sickeningly sweet.

Also, as far as bread, I just read the label of our "premium" bread - Arnold Healthy Multi-Grain, and it has HFCS. I really like making bread in the machine since that way I can control what goes in it...but I don't like the way it slices  Any suggestions on how to nicely slice bread machine bread?

I second that ?

I have a couple of GREAT bread machine recipes. I do not like the way my bread machine bakes, so I use it on the dough cycle and then take it out, put it in a pan and let it rise and bake it in the oven. Well worth it for the taste, texture, price and nutrition. :hippie:

That's a great idea. I've been thinking about a simple website. Since I do website design, I can create a page (it will have a dumb name like www.lfsh.com/hfcs) but this way folks can bookmark it and it & it will be easily updatable.

Maybe we can work together? If you can compile a list and send it to me I'd be happy to maintain it online.

I won't be able to do any update Oct. 22 thru Nov. 1 as we'll be in WDW:banana:

I found 2 sites that have tried to start a list of HFCS free foods.

HFCS Free List
No HFCS List

These lists are not comprehensive because they are being put together by individuals like us. I did see that a lot of people would be interested in a comprehensive list like this.

Also, what about sports drinks? My boys are having to give up their Gatorade during baseball games and I feel badly for them! Thanks!!

Looks like Gatorade powder that you mix with water doesn't have HFCS.

Ingredients for orange version: Sucrose, Dextrose, Citric Acid, Salt, Sodium Citrate, Natural Orange Flavor with Other Natural Flavors, Monopotassium Phosphate, Partially Hydrogenated Soybean Oil, Yellow 6.

Edited to add: oops...it has partially hydrogenated oil....not so good

I think what really amazes (and disgusts) me is that it's so hard to find products that are actually healthy...they either have HFCS or partially hydrogenated fats or artificial sweeteners. :sad2: Very frustrating indeed.

Do you live near a Trader Joe's or Whole Foods Market??? There are so many healthy items w/o all the crap in it, it's downright exciting. :goodvibes But I know what you mean, it seems that only in the past year or so has healthier items become more "available". But, if you're like my parents, and live in a very rural area, you may be out of luck. :confused3 They "might" have a health food store like 30 minutes away, a small one.

:offtopic: I was preparing our apt. for Fios installation, and she was like what's that? I explained it to her and said, "Don't worry, you guys prolly won't get it for a few decades yet!" :rotfl:

Oh yeah, we have 2 Whole Foods, 4 Trader Joes, a Henrys and a Sprouts all within about 15-25 minutes of us. :cool1: I know we're lucky to have so many choices. We can even go to our local farmers market on Sundays and there is a bakery that brings their products - they make great whole wheat cinnamon raisin bagels, whole wheat cinnamon raisin bread, whole wheat bread and rolls - all with no HFCS in them.

It just frustrates me sometimes how everything seems to have something bad in it. I get tired of reading the labels - not to mention, they are all printed so dang small that I have a hard time reading them! (Yes, I am over 40! :lmao: )

Lots of interesting discussion here in this thread. You've piqued my interest. Thank you.
