Motion Sickness

My mother suffers from motion and sea sickness, so she can't ride many rides.:crazy2: Whenever we go on the Disney Cruise we both wear the little ear patches that go behind your ears so we don't get sea sick, and they work AMAZINGLY! Absolutely no sea sickness!:yay: I don't get motion sickness whatsoever, just sea sickness (ironically enough), but was wondering if those sea sickness patches would work for my mom so she can get on more rides?

It's going to be just her and I on our first trip to DL and I want us both to enjoy everything we possibly can. With her experiencing motion sickness she won't be able to ride many of the rides. Every time we go to WDW together I end up riding half of the rides alone (except for slower rides like HM). Has anyone ever used the patches to aid in motion sickness for rides or anything similar? Or is there something else or other medicines perhaps that any of you have used before? I'm open for any and all help I can get!:listen:

THANK YOU IN ADVANCE!

Our entire party always takes a Bonine everyday, just to make sure we all have a good time and no one gets sick. These are chewable, over-the-counter pills....

I don't kow about the ear patch but perhaps the doctor who prescribed it would have an answer?

They will work!

It's made for motion sickness. Just because you get seasick but not sick on rides doesn't mean the two are different kinds of motion sickness. It's all in how your brain responds to the conflicting sensory inputs. You both get motion sickness, but your mom happens to get it in more ways than you. :thumbsup2

Patch her up!

Perfect! Thanks so much!

Those patches are probably TransdermScop and the contain Scopolamine. Very effective a eleminating motion sickness. My son has used them for many years. I allows him to ride rides he normally could not. It settles down the middle and inner ear, but they do have to come from a doc.
We tried many OC meds and they did not touch the problem.

YW! I'm thinking of getting DH to see a doctor so he can get the patches. I have to ride the Teacups alone b/c he always gets sick on them. In fact, he gets queasy just standing on the sidelines WATCHING me spin my cup like mad (and) simultaneously keeping eye contact with him!

But to be fair, I'm skeered of Splash Mountain's big drop and he's not. I may not get motion sickness but I am a big wuss. :rotfl:

That's EXACTLY what they are! Thanks! I couldn't remember what they were called. We usually just get some from the doctor before we go on our cruises, but I just now thought of the idea that they could help her with her motion sickness. The tricky part is convincing her that they will help her with her motion sickness, too. Ah, moms...gotta love 'em!

I've actually seen many people wearing them at the parks. I know they're supposed to be discrete, but for some reason I still notice them.

I would say she wear one so she can enjoy everything!! :goodvibes

Does it make you drowsy?

I'm not sure if that is one of the side effects, but it does not make me nor any of my family drowsy. However, the one side effect that affects all of us every single time is vision impairment. It causes you to become far sighted. Without my glasses or contacts my vision is 20/400, with the best possible being 20/20, so obviously I have vision problems already. That being said, I am nearsighted, so I see everything better the closer I am. After about 1 day of wearing the patch I become farsighted. So when I look at my menu, for example, I have to hold it away from me as if I were farsighted. So it does make your vision change.

It freaked me out at first and I thought I was going crazy when I woke up and my vision suddenly changed! I didn't really think any of the side effects would actually affect me, but that one did. It's slightly annoying at first, especially for someone like me who wears contacts 99% of my day. But I'd rather take a slight variation in my vision than being sick all day!

Wow! That's so funny that you mentioned that! The exact same thing happened to me with the menu when I used the patches on my cruise last September! I had no idea it was from the patch! My friend and I were both extremely tired the first night also, but that could have been from all the excitement of the first day.

Ohhhh Yes I was going to mention that too. I had two side effects. First off it felt like I had a wad of cotton in my mouth, even 2 days after I took the patch off (only had it on for 12 hours or so).

The second side effect was a bit more...obvious. We went to the USS Arizona memorial the next morning and I noticed that the light seemed really bright outside, even with sunglasses on. When I got back to our hotel, I looked in the mirror and almost did a double take!!

Here's what I saw (click to enlarge...):

Check out my left pupil...the side I had the patch on. The kids called me "night vision" for the rest of the week and it lasted for days.

As far as effectiveness goes, I get EXTREMELY seasick and I wore it one night for a dinner dance thing the kids were going on (I was a choir tour chaperone). I didn't throw up while I was on the boat, but I couldn't look away from the horizon the entire time and I felt very queasy...so in other words it worked minimally at best.

 That's funny! I always go to sleep tired, as well. I've been wearing the patch since my first cruise. I went on Disney Magic Eastern Caribbean, which was my first cruise, when I was 12 (I'm 19 now haha) and I made the mistake of thinking I wouldn't need it. The trip was just my mom Brigette, my cousin Giovanni (14 at the time), and my cousin Zobeyda (she was 17 at the time) and they all were wearing them. I had been on yachts and other boats before and never experienced seasickness so I thought I would be fine. BOY WAS I WRONG!:sad2: I ended up having to leave 5 minutes into dinner at Lumiere's and lay in bed sick. It was horrible.

Luckily, my mom brought several extra sets of patches, so when she came back to the stateroom from dinner I decided to listen to her and put those patches on. By the next day the ship was rocking and I was having a blast not even noticing or getting sick! They worked so great, just don't like the vision change. I'd have to hold my menu far away from my face to be able to read it.

Sorry, I went off on a rant...!!!:rotfl:

Long story short:
THEY WORK WONDERS!:worship:

I am going to mention these to my doctor up here.:thumbsup2 We went on our first....and last lol Disney cruise in December and I was so seasick I prayed for god to take me it was so bad!:scared:

Oh yeah, forgot about that. We get pretty bad dry mouth, but I personally didn't even notice after a couple of days. But, I see that it unfortunately worked minimally for you GBShorts. Luckily for me it worked great as far as my seasickness. But each person is affected differently, and that goes to show it. I'm sorry it didn't work as well for you.

My son does not get any ofthe side effects. He is just greatfull that he can do the rides and not be ill all day.

I usually never get motion sickness, except for watching unsteady home movies, but I absolutely cannot do the teacups because I get a little queasy watching them!

I used the transdermascope patch and it worked great. I never had any of the vision symptoms. I did however get dry mouth, as is a stated side effect for all motion sickness medication even the OTC stuff. Not a problem, just drank more water to stay hydrated. If your pupils enlarge like that from the medication, you should use sunglasses with UV protection to protect your eyes from the sun.
