Great, NOW I think of this!! Its been so very long since I've been to a theme park, or on an airplane, I totally forgot my prepensity for getting sick!!

Any ideas? I seem to recall taking dramamine, but that makes one sleepy...

Any experiences with "bonine"?

Are the patches prescription only?

Thanks for any ideas or suggestions, or what works for you...

I usually take some ginger capsules...you can get them in any nutrition store. This will definately help with any nausea without making you tired. This works for me when I'm out in the ocean.

Hope it helps!!

As a travel agent, I have this question alot for those cruising. I heard an agent that had been in the business for years recommend eating an apple once or twice a day. Something in them helps settle your stomach so you don't get quesy. Can't speak for this personnally as I've never had motion sickness but she seemed to know what she was talking about. I've also heard if you eat several small meals a day instead fo 2 or 3 big ones, that helps. That makes sense to me since that is what they tell you to do in the first trimester of pregnancy but again, I was lucky and never had problems.

My DS "sometimes" gets car sick, and we are driving to Disney this saturday. I asked the pharmacist where the dramamine was and he told me that Benadryl would have the same effect.

Benadryl makes me VERY sleepy in fact so much so that I have actually taken it to help me sleep in the evening so before your DS swallows one of these on vacation I would try it at home or he may be asked to become the 8th dwarf.....Drowsy!:D

My dh has bad motion sickness and tried Bonine for the first time this trip. He said that it definitely helped, though didn't completely take away the motion sickness. He was able to go on RnR with only a little queasiness and no long-lasting problems, for example. Normally, he wouldn't have even tried RnR. He didn't think that he was any more tired either.

He had a horrible experience on Mission:Space even with the Bonine.

Bonine was prescribed by my DD's gastroenterologist and we've had pretty good success with it for car/plane motion sickness. They're chewable so they're easy to tote around -- I've had no experience with patches. Also drink ginger ale, eat higher protein prior to event , no acidic foods, small meals. And don't eat immediately before event (uh, we found this out the hard way !) Carry a ziploc bag you can get to pretty quickly, just in case.

I've had very good luck using SeaBands, an accupressure remedy. No drug interactions or drowsiness to worry about, they're easy to carry around and slip on & off, and they're reusable for years. You can find them in drugstores near the Dramamine; they usually charge about $8. Also, papaya tablets are good at settling your stomach if you can't find or don't like the ginger pills.

I've had no success with Dramamine or the wrist bands. Still got deathly ill with them. I've had great luck with the patch on my last two trips to WDW. Rode MS and RnRC with no problems whatsoever and very few, if any, side effects.

I just called my MD and got a prescription for it.

I had an experience w/the patch. I took it for a week while on a cruise. It left me w/dry mouth, blurry vision and b/c it can dilate your pupils, my eyes were extremely sensitive to light.
After the trip, I had "withdrawal" symptoms. I was nauseous off of the patch! According to my Dr., my system was used to the medicine and I went through withdrawal from it. I was sick for a good day and a half w/nauseau and dizziness. It was like being motion sick. Ugh! I will never use those patches again!

As far as dramamine ... I used that the whole time I was at WDW (all 10 days, consecutively). No effects after I stopped using it. Worked wonders for me and I have to take it for not only the flight, but to even ride Goofy's Barnstormer! Yes, I got a little tired in the middle of the day ... but as long as I wasn't in the bus or at a show, I was fine. I just kept on going, making sure to munch on something to give me energy (those Mickey Ice Cream bars always seemed to do the trick!). I was even able to ride Mission Space w/o any problems!!!! My DH, who tolerates motion extremely well, was green after MS ... but I skipped out of there while he dragged!

Don't know what to tell you ... everyone has different side effects from different meds. One poster said they had no prob. w/the patch. Good luck!

I have tried everything for motion sickness and the thing that worked best for me is the patch. The others worked, but I still had some uneasiness after doing some of the attractions. With the patch, I was even able to ride the teacups--which for me is HUGE!
They are prescription only--Scopolamine Patches.
Place behind your ear, lasts 3 days.

Good Luck.

I use the Sea Bands too. You have to remember to put them exactly where the instructions say or they won't work as well.

Whenever we go on a cruise I always take Meclazine. Meclazine is the generic form of Bonine and I think it causes much less drowsiness than Dramamine. You can buy Meclazine at Wal-Mart for around $10 for 100 tablets....much less expensive than Bonine and Dramamine. Ask the pharmacist if they have Meclazine, if not they can order it for you....both Wal-Mart and K-Mart have offered to order it for me.

We tried Bonine on our last trip and it made us VERY sleepy for 24 hours, even though it is not supposed to and others have used it with success. Bottom line--try it out at home first just in case.

We tried the Sea Bands last week at an amusement park and they seemed to help.

The active ingredient in Benadryl is used in some over the counter sleep aids. It does make most people sleepy, but if I use it for too many days it makes me jittery. Go figure since Bonine makes me very sleepy.

Active ingredient - CYCLIZINE HYDROCHLORIDE 50 mg

Over the counter but usually they have to order it for you. CVS will and am sure most major pharmacies will. 12 tablets run about $8.

Used on boats all the time, because it works great and has very minimal drowsiness. All we keep in the house now.

The benadryl is what our pediatrition recommends for our daughter and even our vet for the dog. I think it works because it does knock you out! If you can stomach the taste of it crystallized ginger helps ( You can find it at asian markets). It does the job however, I don't find it to be the best tasting thing to swallow when your stomach is already queasy. This one I haven't tried yet but I bought it for our trip. Sea band has a ginger chewing gum...... unfortunatly I couldn't find it locally and had to pay a pretty penny or I should say " pound" for it mail order! I had to order it from the UK.

Try peppermint. I haven't gotten motion sick for years but I went on a bus trip a year or so ago and got extremely motion sick. I was having a very hard time keeping my stomach down. We stopped at a Cracker Barrel for lunch and I bought some of those old fashion peppermint sticks. I ate a few of them before getting back on the bus and the rest of the way to our destination. I was fine.

YEah!! Thanks for all the suggestions - I couldnt find the crystalized Ginger, just rememberd we have a new Asian Market in town *duh!!!

keeping fingers crossed that the plane will be a smooth flight!! :)
