Motion sickness advice needed...

I just got back last night and I only had a few moments of illness on our trip.

EE was a disaster. The ride is super cool and I was great until the last 45 seconds or so. I had to sit and rest for a while when I was done. I think I also had to hold on to the wall for a minute or two. :(

Mission Space is something that I rode ONCE years ago and will never do again. Ever.

ToT is fine for me for some reason.

Space Mountain is not something I will ride. It is too jerky and I don't recover well.

Star Tours is tough. I keep thinking I will be fine and I never am. I need to just remember to not ride it. I had to sit on the bench outside of the ride for a while.

RNRC is fine for me, I love to ride it and can do it several times in a row.

Does anyone remember the old Body Wars ride at EPCOT from years ago? That ruined my vacation, I should have learned my lesson.

Very similar to what you experience: I love ToT and can do it back to back 3 or 4 times!
EE- I can ride it, but I am shakey afterwards. I will only do it if I am feeling 110%
Mission Space, Star Tours and Teacups: too scared to even try

Splash and Thunder Mountain: Easy peasy

RnR- Never, ever, ever again.

Oh! The carousel- not for me. :sad2:

Just curious where can you buy the ginger gum or the candied ginger?

Is the new Star Tours much different than the original? I could handle the original (on an empty stomach) but am unsure of trying the new version.

Here in Portland both Safeway and Trader Joe's carry candied ginger. I have found it in the produce section, the baking section and even in the spices section. I have not yet come across the gum though.

I feel queasy just watching the Teacups, never mind riding in them. But I have braved Everest, which I can ride once without feeling sick, just a bit weird. It is a very cool ride definitely worth doing. The first time I rode I had my eyes firmly closed and that made it worse, I think. Plus I missed the main attraction. DS after the ride (excited): "Mom, did you see the yeti?" - Me (weak voice): "No, where?" So yeah, don't close your eyes.

Splash Mountain just has that big drop at the end but nothing that would cause motion sickness, well, unless big drops do that to you. But I think you'll be fine on both rides.

When going on vacation, I take a Meclizine (generic Bonine) every night before bed, beginning with the night before I fly out. It works for 24 hours, so by taking it at night before bed, I don't worry about it making me groggy. Also, I just continually take it every night while on vacation so it can build up in my system. So far this has kept me from having motion sickness (however, I still can't ride on spinning rides like the tea cups).

I also take my dramamine at night to help with the grogginess.

I have benign positional vertigo and cannot ride simulators of any kind so Universal is a no no for me. I have no problem on TOT,RNR, Space MTN, BTM,but got very sick on Everest and Star Tours. I won;t even try mission space. I can even get sick on Soaring if I'm not really careful . Nothing works for me so I just avoid those rides . It seems like more and more rides are simulators and that's ashame. I cannot even do Three D movies without getting violently sick. I wish bonine worked for me. I do not get sick on cruises unles sits very rough . The movie in France can sometimes do a number on me too

I get pretty bad motion sickness. Bonine or Dramamine do nothing to help. I have found that rides like Big Thunder Mountain and Splash Mountain are ok. Once I went on the Aerosmith ride in Hollywood Studios and was green afterwards. I would never even consider rides like Space Mountain or EE.

These tips are wonderful! I went from being able to ride any ride to getting terrible motion sickness within a year.

On our last trip we went to IOS/USO and doing Forbidden Journey/Hulk/Spiderman back to back wiped me out for the whole day (ie: I watched a movie and vomited while my family enjoyed the park).

I'm okay to do Space Mountain, RnRc and EE about once each day with shows/small attractions in between. Splash is NO problem, I rode it several times, and ToT as well I can ride over and over without problem.

Star Tours = wanted to die.

Good luck on your trip - I think I might try the seabands/ginger gum!

Hi all. OP here. Just returned last night from a 7 day stay. (I have the blues, that's for sure). Anyway, wanted to give an update. On our first day at MK, I gathered up all my courage and finally rode Splash Mountain for the very first time. I was pretty nervous, but I absolutely loved it. Rode it 3 more times during the week. The feeling I get during the drop is not a queasy one, just more like my stomach is flying out the top of my head. But it was so quick and so exciting, it wasn't a problem.
As for Everest, I did not ride it. The 10 seconds of backward drop was too much for me to even consider. So, 50/50 for new rides this trip!

My husband is very prone to motion sickness and it's getting worse as he gets older sadly.
His parents both have it bad as well, so I don't know but there may be a hereditary component.
For him, it really depends on the ride. His worst rides are simulators of any kind. If his eye can't naturally follow the movement he gets ill. Riding in the seats that face backward on the bus? Not good.
Roller coasters are hit and miss. If he's had a Bonine he seems good to go.

On our first trip to Disney he went on Expedition Everest first thing in the morning and hadn't had meds. We had to sit for a good half hour until he was well enough to walk to the first aid tent. He laid down there for half an hour and we finally made it to the buses to go back to the room for the day. It made him that ill.
But with a Bonine? He's fine to ride it. Soarin' he mostly closes his eyes.
The Forbidden Journey at Universal was pretty awful for him too even with the Bonine.

We've gotten pretty good at knowing what he can and can't handle.
One thing we've found that is very important is to take the Bonine an hour or more before you ride anything. If you don't give it long enough to work it's not going to work properly all day.

I get sick from movement - like sitting in the backseat of a car, riding in a plane and even riding in the passenger seat for more than an hour. Seabands and ginger capsules work for me.

I do not have any issue with motion sickness on everest, but it makes my chest and lungs hurt and I am a very healthy and active person.

I was wondering about motion sickness too. My fiance gets sick from spinning, so no teacups, dumbo, or the carousel for him. Yes, I am shocked he can't even ride Dumbo!

However I was worried about the simulators for him. He wanted to ride Mission Space but is now thinking of holding off on it.

As for me, I have anxiety and get vertigo badly. So I have decided not to ride RnRC and ToT. But I wonder about the simulators and Space Mountain and EE for me.

Does anyone have advice for me? Thanks!

Thanks for reporting back here! I am so glad you decided to try Splash!!! It is my favorite ride for so many reasons, one being that it doesn't make me dizzy or sick. :) We always try to get in repeat rides during our stays. I especially love sitting in the front of the log and leaning forward. I was a huge roller coaster fan when I was younger and as the years go by and I have to keep crossing rides off my list, Splash remains a constant joy for me. Hooray for you!!:thumbsup2

Kayely-as you can see from reading through this thread, there are rides that affect some people but don't affect others. Space Mountain does not have any inversions or loops which would be bad for anyone with motion sickness, but it is in the dark, so maybe your anxiety would make that more stressful. Simulators can make some people who don't even have vertigo/motion sickness issues sick, so I would read as much as you can and then decide for yourself. I think one of the reasons I felt queasy on EE was because I went on it first thing in the morning on an empty stomach. I was OK when it first started to go backwards, but at the last part it felt like we went up and back (almost like a backwards loop) and that's when I started to feel a bit queasy and I just couldn't enjoy the rest of the ride. Luckily it wasn't as bad as my ToT experience and didn't affect the rest of my day. I think I will skip it this trip. I have never tried Bonine or any of the other remedies, so I can't help with that. Good luck and happy planning!

Great thanks! I'm going to try EE and if it makes me sick then I'm not going to try it again. As for the simulators with me and my fiance we'll just have to wait and see how we feel when we get there.

Anyone ever found the Ginger Gum or Ginger Candies anywhere besides safeway or Trader Joe's? Don't have either close to me! Thanks!!

long time motion sickness sufferer, here ... on Splash Mountain, it's not the big drop that gets me. It's the one about halfway through the ride. Gets me every time. I hate it. My husband doesn't ride, so he's waiting for me at the exit with a cold bottle of diet coke. seems to help.

I can't ride Soarin', Star Tours, Philharmagic, or Everest. But I can ride Splash. Go figure. LOL

I found ginger to be a great help. I've never tried Bonine, but Dramamine makes me sleepy, which is another miserable condition to suffer while in the parks. I also found that keeping a diet coke, or something without sugar, close at all times helps. Making sure I eat at regular intervals also helps to lessen the nausea I feel as well. I don't know how many would agree, but for me, it's also a mind-set. I find myself getting nauseated if I think on it too long. That is so wrong!:confused3
