Mother's Day Cards for Everyone?

I don't mind the various cards, but I don't like spending much on them. I usually stick to the .99 cards, they get the point across without costing a fortune. The man in front of me today spent over $12 on three cards. If it was me, I'd bank the extra $9 and buy something improtant like food with it.

We have 7 family birthdays in the first week of May (including DD's). Add in my DS's confirmation, Mother's Day, three high school graduations and a college graduation, and you've got a boatload of $$ dropped at Hallmark.

I was at CVS on Sunday and the guy in front of me in line bought one card. When the clerk said, "$8.79" the guy almost lost it!!!! He said "I've never spent $9 on a card before! I'm shocked!"

I do not have children (not by choice) but my Godchildren do send me cards and that makes me happy.

Now I did find it strange to see Happy Mother's Day to Dad cards.

When I went to the store to get my mom a Mother's Day card, I noticed that fewer than half the cards were for your mom. There was a section for a spouse (I find that a little weird already, though it seems most don't). But fully 1/3 of the cards were for other people: sister, grandma, aunt. Do so many people buy Mother's Day cards for their aunts that they should have a special section?

I know the card companies do this to try to expand sales. If they convince people that they have to get a Mother's Day card not just for mom, but for every woman they know that has a kid, they'll sell a lot more cards. My question is do people really fall for it?

We used to give Mother's Day cards and gifts to my great aunt, who have since passed away.

We buy mom cards for my mom, DH's mom and DH's stepmom.
We also buy grandma cards for the kids to sign for the 3 moms as well.
I get a card for my Nana that we all sign and we do the same for a very special aunt.
DH gets me a card because I am the mother of his children. When it is all said and done we buy 11 cards for Mother's Day. I have also sent cards to other relatives/friends on their first mother's day.

Why do you find this weird? I am HIS children's mother and the most important one! While he should acknowledge his mother on mother's day, if he ignores me there will be an issue. I was the one that gave him children.

As for the rest, I say Happy Mother's Day to all that are mothers but I don't buy them cards or anything.

Normally, he would have something to do with that as well. Oh and it's mother's day and you are not his mother.

On Father's Day, I give my DH a card that lets him know how much I appreciate what a great Father he is. Being that my DH will not be in town for Mother's Day, I am sure he will send me flowers. Of course, he is not my father, but I appreciate the father that he is to our children and I enjoy letting him know.

I have no issue with that, it was the attitude of the poster that bothered me.

Now, would I ever buy something like that? No. But to each his own. I know that to some women, their dog is their baby.

There must be a market for it, and people buying them, or else they wouldn't exist. Companies don't usually make products that they know aren't going to sell.

That is correct, its Mother's Day, a day to honor mothers, all and any that you choose to. It doesn't have to be just "yours"

I am so glad that this was posted. My Mom and I were just talking about this. I asked if I should get a card for my son to give to his Godmother. She said no. And I thought that he should. I am glad to see that other people do this. This is the first Mother's Day for her(and me ) so I wanted to start it out right.

When we were trying unsuccessfully to have a baby, that card made me feel very nice. He decided to try and make me feel better by taking the 2 of us out to dinner. Just the two of us, no children at all whatsoever, and the waitress asked me if I was a mother. Yeah, it was a stab in the heart. Knowing so many of my friends who are battling infertility (1 in 7 couples in America) those cards can really cheer a woman who desperately wants to be a mother and can't conceive.

I agree,my daughter and I started the day off by cooking breakfast for my wife and severed her in bed,thats a good start for the day.

I am not a mother but my 6yo niece has always given me a card and small gift on Mother's Day. I am also her godmother and at her mother's request she calls me Mama. I am helping to raise her as I am almost always available to babysit, pick her up from after school care, take her to swim class, etc. Her parents both work full time plus and there are times I have her more than they do. Kind of like the it takes a village situation. My DB also does a lot for me in exchange. He does all of my outside work. It helps tht we live on the same street about a block apart, close but not too close to be in each other's hair!

BTW DN & I will be taking our 3rd trip to WDW in just over 2 weeks!

I look at the Mother's day cards for Dad to be for single fathers who are raising their children alone. I teach 1st grade and have run into that situation more than once where the mother just isn't in the picture or ahs died. I tell the children that they can make a Mother's day card for their dad (or mom for Father's day) or for anybody who takes care of them.

As far as DHs giving cards/gifts, my dad used to take my mom out to dinner and give her her gifts on the day before calling it "Wive's Eve".

I got a card this year from the dog. It was one of the funniest cards I've ever gotten! I didn't expect it, but it definitely made my day. I don't think my husband went to Hallmark with the intention of buying a card from the dog though. My kids made or bought their own cards for me, but I guess he thought the dog needed a little help.
