Most hated baby names

I can understand people saying they want to give their kids a different name because they were in class with so many other (insert common name here). However, as a different perspective, I grew up with a more unusual name and it wasn't the best thing. I don't think it gave me any more confidence as a kid. Some people made fun of it in school, no one could pronounce it or spell it. I have gotten so tired of correcting people, that I just don't any more. To make maters worse, my parents technically pronounce it wrong!! So I have to tell people how "we" say it. It is just annoying. I have always wanted a beautiful "normal" name. My whole life. Isabelle would be great. People can say it and spell it. Unfortunately I am kind of stuck, so Chandra it is. But do I like it, no. Actually I hate it. And the nickname "Chaney" is awful. And yes, my family still calls me that. :headache: Just thought I would say that having a different name, doesn't always add up to positives. Oh and the only other Chandra I have ever met in my life was a GUY! (It is a popular male name in India. And my parents are Italian and Irish. That explains why they pronounce it SHandra and not Chandra. :)).

As you can see by my screenname, my 9yoDDs name is : Nevaeh (Heaven spelled backwards), her middle name: Celeste. I can't imagine her with any other name.
My 2yoDDs name: Aubrey. I also have a niece named: Jayden
My name is Jennifer, I promised myself when I was younger that my daughters names would be different.
Having multiple Jennifers in every class at school, will do that to you.

I was the only Helene in my school, trust me when I say having an not so common name isn't all that great either. :confused3

I love the name Aubrey... my ds 3 would have been Aubrey if he was a girl. He is Anthony... not Tony...

I'm just reading through and thinking...would a baby name thread on the DIS be complete without a chiming in of "my sister taught a boy named Orangejello"? lol

Sorry, I could not resist!

Cross my heart, hope to die, my sister taught a boy named Orangejello about 20+ years ago in SC. :)

I actually have a blog where I explore unusual names: http://strangeunusualandwackynames.blogspot.com/ Drop by ;)

DD has an unusual spelling for a traditional name, but not on purpose. We knew what we were going to name her, but were going back and forth between the two common spellings of Katherine and Kathryn.

When she was born, she had a major heart defect and had to be transported almost immediately to our Children's Hospital. Which meant that we had to finish up the paperwork in record time.

So, there I was sitting in my room, just being told that my child had Down syndrome and had a major heart defect, with her sitting in a transport incubator while the transport team was trying to explain things to me, when the nurse shoved the birth certificate paperwork at me.

Somehow, in all the confusion, I got the spellings mixed up and she ended up a mix of the two common spellings: Katheryn.

I do regret it as I am always saying k-a-t-h-E-r-y-n.

I love Quinn, always have. But hate Kwinn, Kwynn or anything of the sort. But since I screwed up the spelling of our daughter's name, I really can't fault anyone else. FWIW - Quinn reminds me of Zoey 101 - a popular show during my kid's younger years.

Love Addison, but that is because I work with the cutest 1st grader named Addison. Also love Cameron for a girl. I tend to like the stronger, more masculine names that also have very girly nicknames. Ie; Addie, Cammie.

Couple of the strangest names I have heard are from the schools I have worked at. I know a 6th grader named Ocean (boy) and a third grader named Galaxy (girl). But then I live in a town that has not outgrown its hippie years and the eco culture is more cult than culture. 4/20 was a major event last week. :rotfl:

I met a woman who tried to name her baby Chlamydia. NO JOKE. The mom thought it was pretty. Thank God everyone got through to her and she didn't end up with that name. Can you imagine?!?!
I also knew a hair dresser once that named her twin boys Shawn and Sean. (she pronounced the last one as Seen) Poor kids had the same name and didn't even know.

That is awful. Why orange? I prefer red jello. :rotfl2:

Haha, more like, "My sister's best friend's roommate's cousin taught a boy named Orangejello. I SWEAR it's true because none of these people would ever lie."

Working in a school gives lots of insight on names -

Current elementary students -

Dorcus(female) - I know it's biblical, but still....
Gonorrhea(female) - "Gu-NOR-ree-uh" (parents were not from the US and did not speak English, when the were "able" to have their baby girl in the US. They saw the sign of the beautiful girl on the poster in the hospital and saw the name....ugh)

And my all time favorite -
Runjump(male) - family member joked she'd give the mom $$$ if she named her son Runjump...and she did!

The little girl on toddlers and tiaras is named "Camarie" because her mom craved calamari during her pregnancy. Original. ;)

oooooh my Allison would have been called Watermelon if I went off cravings! wait I guess I could have called her Melanie?

With my last pregnancy all I craved was caprese salad. So using that formula I would have named my twins Caprese & Salad. :rotfl2: Salad would have to be the boy. :)
My first would have been Jello pudding pop. :rotfl2:
And second....Coco?!?!? :)

Well, actually, it was MY sister.

It has been a long time ago but I think it was on the menu card they have in the hospital and the mom thought it was "pretty" written out. It was said "Or-an-gel-o". She had one little boy who's name was written one way and pronounced entirely different.

My kids would be Tim Bits and Kit Kats!

:lmao: Oh my. I should have Pickled Beets and Spaghetti by that logic. My name should be Pickle Juice.

I think some names are over the top and I do think sometimes parents get lost in the whole "it's my baby and I will name it what I want" mentality and don't really step back and realize whatever they saddle their kid with it is the CHILD that has to deal with a lifetime of "how do you spell that" or "how do you pronounce that" or "what did you say" or the teasing or jokes (or being stuck named Cutie Pie when they are 40 years old and want a more adult or professional sounding name).

So it really isn't all about them but about the child that has to live with it for the rest of their life
