Southwest has announced it will fly out of Pittsburgh beginning May 1st.

Used to fly US Air (until their fiscal problems) then AirTran (until they lost my luggage - but did make it good with vouchers). Thought we'd try Southwest for the $59 flights.

So, despite the cute commercials I've been seeing, I assume not all flights are $59. Is the best place to start looking for discounted fares their website, do they have a frequent flyer club?

I'm quite confused regarding the assignment of seats. Is it first come, first serve for boarding? If I'm not inclined to wait a hour or so in line, is their a chance I won't get any seat (i.e., do they overbook the capacity?).

Anyone have any baggage nightmares to report?

What shape are the planes in, aesthetically? Thanks.

Yes they have the Rapid reward program. They don't assign seats so you either get to the airport 1 1/2 to 2 hours early so you get an A boarding pass.

Southwest is the only place to find their flights. The planes are in great shape.

As far as cost I am sure there is a limited number of $59 seats. When they are gone expect to pay higher prices. Since Pittsburgh is new for Southwest I am sure you will see deals on other carriers also in Pittsubrgh.

I would nab that fare because if Philly is any example, SW fares will go fast! USAirways is our dominant airline, but SW is exceptionally popular and has been here less than one year. Right now, SW has about 6 flights out of Philly a day to MCO and six return flights. Most of the flights are non-stop. Since they do not have as many flights as USAirways here (yet), the SW flights go fast. Check out their website - it is quite easy to use. And most competitors with SW will end up competing with their fares. And early check-in (the midnight before your flight) is an option. That will give you some control over your seating if that is a chief concern.

Southwest offers A, B and C boarding passes. They load 'A' passengers first and then 'B' and 'C'. If you don't want to wait at the airport for a spot in the 'A' line, all you have to do is go to their online site at 12:01 am the day of your flight and do online check in. Pretty much guarantees an 'A' boading pass. It is all very simple and you will be really happy with SW I think. The only airline that you can change/cancel tickets and get credit without fees etc.

Also, you don't have to worry about not getting a seat, just you might not get to all sit together on the plane if you are with a few people (if you have a B or C boarding pass).

They do indeed allow changes and give you full credit. My husband and I travel frequently for work, and our schedules are subject to change. We have taken full advantage of SW's generous policy several times now.
