Hi everyone -

I see a lot of people renting their points out, but what if you already have say a 100 point contract but want to have a family reunion and need an extra say 300 points... I see you can transfer points from DVC to DVC but I thought I read in the contract that it was a no no for money transfers with Disney. Is this the case? If so, do people use the term "rent" for both non member rentals and point transfers?

Thanks!

I believe people list their points for transfer if that is their wish. If someone is renting points, you could find a listing that covers the resort and UY that you need and ask if they would be willing to transfer. Transferring points is a bit trickier than renting.

Transfers happen a lot, and although transfers for payment is not allowed, there is no reason to mention money when making the transfer with MS, so I have not seen a problem. If you look at the rent/trade board, you'll see that there are almost always several listing for transfers. IMO, it's a better way to deal with when you need a large number of extra points. You take control of the points.

We have a 100 point contract and transferred in 400 points from another member to cover our family trip in June. It was easy and now we have control over the reservation. There is no more risk involved and we are free to set up everything (DDP, DME, etc) on our own without having to go through the owner. This is particularly beneficial given that we are booking a trip for 15 people.

You are only allowed one transfer in OR out per use year so make sure your one transfer is enough points. We were able to transfer IN 200 points from 2011 and bank them. Then, we transferred IN another 200 points from the 2012 UY to cover the trip. This was done back in July of 2011 so the "once per year" rule applies to the UY of the points in question.

As a PP mentioned, you need to make sure that you do not even hint at any monetary compensation when you talk to MS. I'm sure that they know that nobody is freely giving away hundreds of points to a total stranger, but it is kind of a "don't ask, don't tell" policy:rolleyes1. I think there have been reports that the transfer was denied when the member mentioned compensation.

There are also situations where a member may lend points to another to book a reservation for Home Advantage and the member receiving points can return the favor. My friend and I did this, she lent me points for a reservation and then a couple of months later, I paid them back to her, just a swap in points. It worked for us to help us both get the Home Advantage for booking.

So not all transfers involve an exchange of money.

As kristenrice noted, having the points transferred into your account makes the logistics of reservations and all that go with them much easier. We rented 200 points from a member and transferred them into our account. When I was ready to book, I just called MS and made the reservation. One thing to note, if you have points transferred into your account you may not see them on line. I didn't see the 200 points in mine, but they were there when I called.

Can you tell me ... can a member transfer points to another member if their points are banked? A friend of mine has points she is not going to use and is offering to transfer them into my account, however she has the points banked, so we wanted to be sure this was possible.

Thanks!

Banked points cannot be transferred. She could make a reservation for you using the points.

Another thing to consider, OP, is letting your family members get their own lodging instead of providing it for them all. Sometimes big family gatherings result in hard feelings because the family doesn't understand timeshare points and that they actually cost money.

I definitely prefer transferring points versus renting them. It is a bit of trust factor since you are sending someone money without anything in return until they call Member Services, but I like having the points in my account.
