Hi

We already own DVC, but was looking at getting more.

But for the first time I'm thinking about getting the AP with DVC discount.

With that, I see that I could get DVC villas at a discounted rate, AND there seems to be more availability

through WDW AP than through DVC?

What are the pros and cons of just buying and renewing the AP each year and getting the discounts, than spending a lot up on more points?

Thanks!

points will always be less expensive than any discount Disney will give you.

Disney keeps 2% of points available to sell, plus they can sell breakage points. Sometimes they offer a AP or DVC discount during certain seasons, but this is a marketing thing, not an entitlement for AP holders.

So with DVC you are competing for use of 98 % of the points. Going through Disney reservations, you are competing for 2% of the points. Cost per night will be higher than DVC points, but if you don't need them every year, you can avoid extra maintenance fees.

You are making a presumption that the discounts for rooms will always be there as an AP holder or that the discount will be available for all dates including the ones you want--this one is definitely not true now. When Disney decides it doesn't need to offer discounts for rooms it will drop them for AP holders as well.

Not to mention that AP room discounts are typically the last discount announced, sometimes not until a couple of months out. So you have to wait a long time if you're relying on that discount to book a room.
