We're thinking of going up to Montreal for Columbus Day weekend. We got passports for the kids and ourselves last year and haven't used them yet. We will definitely hit La Ronde because we have Six Flags passes and want to see what it's like. What else is a must-do? Also any nice hotels around $100 US? Should we stay downtown, or on Longueiul, or elsewhere? We will have a car. DS is 8, almost 9 and DD will be 3 a week after the trip.

Thanks for any tips. I'm doing research but it's confusing (and I enjoy doing it!)

A weekend really isn't enough time to see Montreal, especially if you plan on spending one day at an amusement park. I personally wouldn't drive from NJ (if you are driving), to do something I could do closer to home. The current exchange rate favors the Canadian dollar.

There's a lot of info on Montreal available on the Internet (try Montrealvisitorsguide.com), or get a good guide book. I like Frommer's Montreal and Quebec City 2011.

I'm also looking for tips...we are planning a budget trip to Montreal the last week of this month. I booked our hotel (keeping in mind that most places have a $20-$25 fee for parking each day, and there's a 17% tax on the room).

We are not going to try to see it all, we have a small list of places that I hope to grow over the next two weeks. So far we are going to see the Notre Dame Basilica, JetBoating, the Olympic Stadium, the Museum of Archaeology (or something like that), and the Biodome. No Insectarium for us! We also plan to check out the underground city, and we are very fortunate in that dh helped Cirque du Soleil find space when they first came to Boston, and he has a working relationship with them. One of their staff has offered to give us a tour of their facility. I am really excited about that! :woohoo:

It's about a 5 hr. drive for us, so we plan to stock the car to keep everyone happy :goodvibes:

We went up to Montreal about 3 years ago.

We stayed at the Hyatt Regency because DH had a conference and his work paid for it. ;)

The days were mostly just the kids and I touring around as DH had meetings.

We went to the Biodome, the Botanical Gardens, the Children's Museum and we tried to go to the Art museum but it was closed for some reason.

OP, there is a thread about visiting Montreal from the U.S. on the Canadian board, in the International Community area of Disboards. The thread title is, Planning a Trip to Montreal. There was a pretty lively discussion concerning downtown hotels and--of course--food. You might want to pop over and check it out.
