The "themes" was just my idea of adding some "restrictions" to the subject to make it a little more challenging. In our D&D MDMCs we use the themes to spark the creative juices of the writers.

I'm not exactly sure that the concept translates well to photography ... it was just a suggestion.

In practice, we'd come up with a single subject and ten or so modifying "themes" and entrants would post their pics and which 2 or three themes they used.

Using my prior example: a pic of a cloud, taken at noon -- this would be an example of using one of the two "themes".

I'm here I will admit I did drop the ball on this one. I had computer issues a while back and wasn't using my regular computer so I didn't have my notes which had my list for topics, but after a while that wasn't an excuse any longer. I had always had it in the back of my mind, so I thank everyone for bringing it up again.

I have no problem starting it up again and will take some other suggestions as the list I do have I was second quessing the topics. I liked the Winter subject on the last one. I'll try and come up with a new list adding other suggestions. Some we haven't done yet that I did have (list isn't in front of me right now, so I'll go off memory) are Flash photogrphy, portraits, kids, macro/closeup. Others we have done are Animals, Water, Action/Sports, Winter and a few others I can't recall right now.

I was thinking of starting another one up now that will include the rest of April and go to the end of May (since we're already half way though the month). I'll make it an easy/broad topic: Spring.

For those who haven't been around very long, the original idea behind the assignment was to go out and use your camera and also hopefully have some tie to Disney. For example with Animals, you could take any picture of any animal, be it a pet, wild or captive (zoo). This obviously relates to Animal Kingdom. Might have given you a different angle idea or betting lighting idea or something like that.

So if we're up for Spring as a photo assignment I'll start the thread up tomorrow.

If anyone has other ideas for future subjects post them here, we can also do previous subjects that might have been popular.

Allie, not only is "fortnight" not used, but the English slang for cigarettes and erasers also have a totally different meaning on this side of the pond. You should have seen the reaction when I used the English terms!!

I haven't heard anyone use the term 'fortnight' since I saw my highschool's drama club "try" to do Shakespeare.

But I think everyone over here should use it too, I'm in favor of more Americans learning a second language.

BTW, if something last for three weeks, do you guys say a fortnight and a half?

Count me in! I was totally scared of that water drop assignment on the Canon S3 thread, but I did it and I'm so proud! I really need to develop my "eye" and assignments like this will definitely help; even if I never get a shot worth posting, I'll learn from seeing everyone else's pictures.

Can we use the same "rules" that Dana (andromedaslove) uses for her weekly Disney photo contest?

I'm already thinking of some spring shots......

Here are my preferences:

* Every two weeks in the US or every fortnight for Kiwis, Brits, and other funny talking people rather than once a month.

* Each subject ends with a contest to see who best captured the essence of the subject.

* Subjects that are more creative rather than specific. Rather than having specific nouns for subjects, I'd prefer general nouns and adjectives.

Here are some subjects I'd suggest:

* Curves - Find shapes with curves and compose your photograph so that the viewer is drawn to the curves.

* Nighttime - Find a subject that represents nighttime to you. It might be a starry sky. Or perhaps it's reading a bedtime story. Pick something that tells the viewer that this is nighttime.

* Delicate - Take a picture that seems almost untouchably delicate.

* Speed - Take a photograph that shows speed.

* Heat - Take a picture that makes the viewer feel the heat.

* Red - Take a picture that makes the viewer think of the color red. Maybe its one red flower in a sea of green. Maybe its a collection of red crayons in various brightnesses and saturations.

* Gigantic - Take a picture of something that overwhelms the viewer with a sense of enormity.

I'd also allow the photographer full liberty on how they want to construct their image. Any kind of photoshopping, trickery, or image processing is allowed. All that matters is the final image.

I think these are great ideas and parameters. This can really get the "creative juices" flowing and will allow a greater diversity in the photos as well.

I was with you until this part. I think that photoshop does not teach a person how to become a better photographer. If I look at a scene and think "I can just photoshop that tree out" instead of thinking "how can I get the image and not ahve that tree in there", well I may as well just sit here at the computer and take my already existing photos and make a super cool one without even taking out the camera. I'll go with what people want on this one, just my tuppence, um.. two cents.

Agreed Andrew, unless you're adjust contrast/color or adding a border, no over-the-top photoshopping should be allowed.
